Getting sick of this 1 shot bullshit

The original post says what we all feel -- the "one-shot" is bullshit. True I am far from the 1%, but I invest what I can into my toon and with 7-8 years playing this game, I am not a rookie either. I know the mechanics, even if I can never achieve the big end game bonuses. But yet even with all my experience -- I still get one-shotted. And nothing makes me want to rage quit more.

I have accepted Reflect Damage (stupidest mechanic in any game), got used to exploding chests, spike exploding monsters, etc -- all have counters I can work toward to mitigate. Even corpse explosion I can fix (my buds hate playing with me because my current toon removes every corpse -- they have to cast desecrate more often because I remove all the corpses).

But a one-shot from some mysterious white monster drives me nuts. And the OP is right in that it is more infuriating that I have no idea what killed me. I cant improve or prevent the kill if I have no idea what it was. Nothing should ever One-shot. Nothing. 99% shot....ok, give me a moment to react. During our leveling we all know those times we got the 99% hit and the freaky feeling of "holy crap, almost died" and the euphoria of NOT dying. I know there are times I avoid Alva missions because I hate that insta-death when you first spawn into the pyramid room and it happens to have 50 chaos shooting things all hit you before your computer can even register they are there. (I skip Alva till I am late 80's just for that very reason). But I can choose to skip Alva. I cant skip general mapping, only to be wiped out by some random one-shot.

God I hate that.

well i got stuck at tier 8 cause i die so much. and i thought because i did not go for meta build and made my own build i suck so bad.
but wow a veteran player of the game with meta build and everything is still getting one shotted from stuff, he does not even know what happened and calls the game waste of time.
i guess it is time for me to walk away.
this game lures you in with good story and voice acting and casual friendly 10 acts when you die on boss you can still go back and try.
but then you hit end game and hard core bullshit show its color with 10% exp penalty.
i wish i had not spend 50 euro on this game. 50 euro went down the toilet.

Don't misunderstand i love this game. If I didn't I would just Uninstaller like I do many others. It is not a forgiving game I expect to die. But I dont expect to get 1 shot by trash with no indication. If I die and I can't learn from it or adapt I dont see a point.

Sometimes i'm farming on afk-1 butotn mode and nothing even scratches at my es and then i'm suddenly dead. Not indicator, no warning, no nothing. Just dead and i never know why...

Yes I remember Diablo 2, too.

Oneshots: Multi lightning bosses, stygian puppet explosions have been my favorits.

I can imagine there are still bugs in POE - calculating monster damage wrong in some situations.

These spiky one-shots look like this. Otherwise it should be more statistically:

Very tanky char, normally no time below 90%.
- Spike 1 sudden on 50%
- Spike 2 sudden on 70%
- Spike 3 sudden on 10%
- Spike 4 sudden death

And this should be distributed - a spike to 50% should be much more common than one to 10 - and then you can get rembered how much you want to invest in defense.

The only sudden death situations should be visible - some big windup animation, slow moving giant balls. Like the boss 1 shot abilities.

And it's ok to get flattened if you jump in the center of a big mob with a more fragile toon.
For me personally one shots or 5 shots in 0.1 seconds were deadly very annoying too with necros, juggs etc. and I started to watch different advantages of different builds to understand their defences. And I learned a lot in the articles of evasion, armour, block, damage, damage types, aoe, resistances, life, es etc. on poe-wiki ( https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Receiving_damage ). At lvl 96, 97, 98 or hc you learn that you have to balance offensive and defences to avoid deaths and oneshots of all damage types

For example I made this managuardian build with max es on block and max physical damage reduction against oneshots/ fiveshots with 17 layers of defences. But also this can be killed with aoe-groundeffects or the last after-fight explosion of ueber-elder outside Zana's shield, but it has long reaction time and cannot be oneshotted. All blockable hits and spellhits heal the managuardian instead for example.

Perhaps when you fight with oneshots go to the bottom of the build. There is the overview in the "index of defences" to build your defences very safe against damagepeaks of all types and a checklist for most common deaths and kills in the spoiler "FAQ"

3.13 Endgame: The Agonyca Arachnophobia Allstars - 5 mill dmg, 9000+ ES, top 120000 Armour, 2400 ES on max block

So your solution is to play 1 very specific niche build that over stacks defense??
Thats not a solution. I am VERY tanky and my dps is 7x that.

I dont care if I die but dying to shit I can't see and shit I can't learn from or adapt to or avoid or anything is fucking [Removed By Support]. There is no valid argument against this.

No, I say/ I mean that it is about finding your individual balance of offensives and defences.

When you want to play dps you are a little bit faster but will only reach level 95 or 96 and after you start to get oneshotted too often. Yes, that is somehow sick for high damagebuilds, but you can balance more toward defences and reach lvl 100, also in hardcore, without oneshots.

You know it very good, you reached lvl 100 too. But you need best defences and loose damage, exactly as you say.

And I would love to see a damage protocoll of the last 100 damage received before death too. To learn faster the weak spots of the build. And I would love that some fights last longer and you have to struggle more with your healthpool. But deaths are about statscheck, substain and your own balance of defences in poe.

I do not lack defenses as you can see in my OP and by my gear.
The issue is not that I'm playing a glass cannon. I would not create a thread like this if that was the case.
I chose my current build because it is a nice balance of tanky and dps. I'm level 97.
