Not the name of your first born child

They'll give their children unique names such as Paul or Elizabeth so they stand out from the others.

I loled IRL, +1 for your post sir :)
I agree that nothing needs to be done. I came up with what I thought was an original name in D2 and went on to play guild wars to find someone else was already using it. Personally I feel they saw it on D2 and stole it, the thieving bastard, but I simply came up with another. Not getting the name you want is really not that big a deal and when I see a name that is cleaver and original, I applaud (not that YOU can hear it).
Best way to have unique name: close your eyes and type madly. Change first letter to capital and maybe some in the middle to make it possible to pronounce and there you go. That's how I chose my name in D2 15 years ago and it's still here: Jedfoijef.
Last few posters are missing the point. MoonYu, gfurm, the problems you guys mentioned don't exist because everyone can have the character name they want, there's no who steal what or can't think of a name problem. Boseiju, zeto, no one thinks Thor or Paul or Elizebeth is unique, who gave you guys that idea? The point is assuming I really like the name Thor for whatever reason, I CAN name my character Thor. I don't care if there's a million other Thors out there, it doesn't affect me at all. If I really like the name Thor, and have no problems naming my character Thor, guess what maybe I might actually spend money on vanity items to pimp up my Thor character.

Here's how far D3 goes to accomodate new players. People can actually have identical account names (made unique by appending a hidden #number behind). Of course they were expecting much more players at launch compared to PoE, so as mentioned unique account names will be enough for PoE.

Quoting myself from a similar thread a while back:

I have 13 characters so far (including some very recent ones) and only experienced a name being taken once (using a maori name of a huge tree was apparently too obvious for a marauder :-D). Solved that by using an underdash.
But I don't use "popular" names often. E.g. the name of my witch is something from a Sindarin name generator and my ranger goes by an inuit-ish name (which has been my name of choice for first female characters since a certain frost mage girl ten years ago). Bonus: People tend to remember my characters a lot better (than xXpopularnameXx, anyway).
So, if you think a bit outside the box you should be able to come up with a nice/cool & unique name.

:-)
Alysma:

First of all, you and me and others posted here will hardly have a problem because there are only so many of us. Think a million players, maybe 25 million character names for the first 6 months if it gets popular, maybe 10 times that a few years later, compared to the few hundred concurrent players now in closed beta.

Second, again, the problem is not I can't think of a unique name, but rather I can't use a name I really like because it's taken.

I've been a "late adopter" of popular games with this naming system before and still never had problems finding a name. I do understand that it sucks having a name you like taken but then, it's only a character in a game. So, if you like Thor, how about Thorandir (from Middle Earth lore), Thoralf, Thorberg, Thorbrand, Thordur, Thorfast (all scandanvian names), ... There are so many possibilites to still get close to what you want with a little bit of creativity/research and who knows - maybe you'll even like it better :-D
just be creative

some of my IGNs:

SilSol_ten/FiretemplarwithAA/JesusFacebreaker/SilSol_three/SilSol_two/grumpycatbestgodever
It's understandable that some people don't have a problem with sharing a name with other characters, but there is the slight issue that a lot of other players do have a problem. They want their names to be unique, and not being unique due to having an account name or number plastered onto them. They want their characters to be known and remembered by a name.
Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus.
First in the credits!

That's very impressive, considering that D2 was only released 12 years ago. :P
