Character names clashing
" I think your worries support my point even more. You use your unique name for 15 years, but you can't use that name or anything close, because someone else used it 10 years ago and never played the game since. How pissed would you be? Besides you will never see that person or that person's character so who cares what names that person uses? |

I think that it would be a good idea if GGG somehow made it so you could use the same name multiple times. The thing that really pisses me off is when most of the early alpha and beta players just horded unique names so that they could "save it for later". What ends up happening is that they don't play ever again and all those name can not ever be used again.
So what if someone has the same name as yours? Chances are you won't ever seen them unless its something like "Conan". Like what someone said earlier, its no an MMO for f sake. I was lucky enough to get in beta pretty early so I "reserved" a few names, but it just makes me feel bad when others go around using up all their character tabs just to reserve name (and never play those characters). Go ahead and say what you want, but the only people disagreeing about multiple character names are the hoarders. |

All the concerns so far like vanity and scamming are already solved by account names which are unique. Simply show the account name in trading screen, or show them in ladder rankings.
accountname1 will have "witch (accountname1)" accountname2 will have "witch (accountname2)" Think it's ugly/too long? Add in UI options Show/Hide my account name. Show/Hide others' account names. For me, your unique names you used for 15 years should be your account name, not character name. So far all ARPGs seem to follow this method which makes sense to me, I would hate to see a good game like Path of Exile die due to this. Any developers/mods want to comment on this? Some other related things to consider for the developers. Diablo 2 fight having massive databases by making you play for a few hours to "perm" the character, and if you don't play it for 6 months, they delete it, names, items, everything. |
|
" legacy names are reserved so people have time to delete them and recreate on the new league.. otherwise you'd have to be sure to login just when the league was released (legacy recently, and soon OB) to make sure you can keep your name? that's not right. when an HC character dies, he's automatically moved to default, so have to make sure the name is allowed in both places. you make an assumption that they won't purge an account if it hasn't been logged into for 10 years. or that the person who has the character isn't playing it or doesn't want it. current system is good, absolutely no reason to change it. lots of reasons to keep it the same |

Well, I for one really HATE the D2 system. They delete your char and if someone creates one using the same name yours gets wiped. Great, you just lost months of game and you cannot come back to it.
Would be much better to force players to use multiple word names like in GW. Also account name is important, I want to be able to see acc name easily! Regarding the problem of running out of names... well not much can be done, all the solutions are harmful to someone. Best one would be to increase the pool for names for once. If that is even necessary, names can be quite long right now. For example, Conan might not be free, but ConanTheMightyBarbarian should be (probably too long though). Also this is not an MMO, its an ARPG. So char names are less important than Account names. Best solution is to make acc names easily visible. Last edited by Neikius#2291 on Oct 27, 2012, 3:05:50 PM

This isn't an issue, and nothing should be done about it. MMOs have significantly more characters created then this game ever will, and i've never even heard of this issue being brought up. That applies to any type of game as well.
If you have an issue making a name, try using some creativity. Or, if you're lazy, just start numbering them. Also, as has been pointed out, we have unique account names. More then enough can be done with that if GGG chooses to. Edit: I see people talking about account names being visible. This should be entirely up to the individual if they want it to be visible. I'm tired of companies removing privacy. Last edited by Magnicon#6598 on Oct 27, 2012, 3:10:27 PM

pilmoni:
here's how it works awesomecharactername (pilmoni) awesomecharactername (someotherguy) everybody's happy, no reserving problems, doesn't affect HC in any way, not sure why you mention that. Neikus: You character don't get wiped because of other people, it gets wiped because you didn't log in for 6 months. You're not making any sense? Magnicon2: If the playerbase remains small like in closed beta, sure there won't be a problem. MMOs have multiple servers, PoE has 1? In fact go visit old MMOs with < 3 servers and check out players' names. You want to hide your account name from other players? Too late it's already displayed here. |

I'd agree with a last name feature. But I don't think the visuals would work well (like when you target someone in PVP).

Of all the posts I read today, this one is by far the most pointless.
By all means GGG, stop what your doing, hold the press, and change your naming system for the handful of people who are upset that they didn't get their unique name of "Thor" in your game. They of course say that it's unique, but honestly 99% of your "unique" names aren't unique at all. Who cares, it's a name, of a VIDEO GAME character. Not the name of your first born child or your pet snake.... If anything it forces you to be more creative and think outside of your little box that so many of you are confined to. If it's taken, get over it, I've had plenty of names I would have liked for many characters in many different games. But you know what? I just thought of something else. In the years, and years I played D2, I've created unique names for more than 100 characters (not exaggerating) and none of them had any sort of xxx in them and none of them were a bunch of buttons mashed together to pick something. This is not a game making/breaking thing. Many, and I mean MANY games don't have this feature and never will and they are plenty successful enough. |

" They'll give their children unique names such as Paul or Elizabeth so they stand out from the others. If you have account problems please Email Support
