Character names clashing

One name per server is so antiquated. Instead of being able to take the name I wanted I got stuck with this name that I don't really like.. The owner of the name I wanted may have played closed beta a total of 10 seconds, and will never again play the game.

A person who likes this name can never have it.

My other characters for the moment are named something like 'sdfdfsfdasjklf'. All one-name-per-server rules get you is name45616554 which is idiotic. I like name.<ID> or 'fname lname' as possible solutions.

It isn't realistic not to be able to have duplicate names.. You don't go around hearing Mike234235 as a person's legal name.

Okay, as an act of good faith, I'm prepared to release one of my reserved names to the OP. The choices are (remember, only one will be released):

Spatula_Failsafe
SchwaffleBerryShortcake (it pains me to offer this one, but if it keeps the peace, so be it)
CareBerry_RainbowCakes

These are all actual (lvl 1) characters, that I planned on using in OB. Generosity, meds, who knows? Either way, this is a one time offer!

Judging by the name. I take it that Careberry_RainbowCakes is a hard core cut throat league face breaker build?...

Um....er...or they could hypothetically be the characters I'm going to use to outfit the rest of my characters with LMPs (those who need them, that is)...maybe possibly

I was reading one of the threads about offensive names (or something like that), and someone mentioned something to the effect of, "seeing a bunch of Strawberry Shortcakes and Care Bears running around". I thought that sounded like an awesome idea =D
Ok, I have re-read through this thread and PlayerO has so far failed to convince me of his argument.

First off, you used a generalization that most people are unable to come up with unique names, therefore no unique names. Really? I sometimes just hangout in town to read others names and laugh. many are extremely clever.

Two, worried that you online friends won't know you? How about going back into the games you were playing with them and telling them you new name?

While you have been insulted, no need to insult back. A rational argument that doesn't get personal is the goal.

I also personally hate the x's before and after a name. Mostly because its boring.

That said, I seriously don't think you will ever accept our argument against yours and I can't see us agreeing to yours. Sorry, but that is the way it is.

I would agree that a name not in use should be released to be taken again. Perhaps every 90 days of non-use a red flag would go up on the char name letting the player know they had 30 days to play that character or else it would get deleted.

Several ways to alleviate this:
1) let us have last names
2) do like guild wars and put a number at the end of every character name that can be hidden.
3) or exactly what the op said tie it to forum name(though I'm less a fan of this one)

Last names would be cool

GW2 only does that for account names, not character names. And it does suck because all names you could possibly imagine are taken forever unless you make some random thing up. All my planned names were taken the second their servers went life. :/ plus they are global so even if you are on a different server - that name is still taken. At least we can have spaces in the name though. (In GW)

I would like the option to have any character name I want. I do like Diablo 3's idea for the most part... However in game I think they should use character names and keep account name private to everyone but friends. Its a total bummer when you can't get the name you want or use the name multiple times on your own characters. This is something I would love to see in PoE.

D3 had that system because it has something like a 6-10 million player base, each of which has several characters.

Most online games have no need of a system like that, D3 has the possibility of literally *every* name being taken otherwise (same with WoW i guess lol)
Names like most games should be given on a first come first serve basis, A player that has made a account in BETA should always have priority over a player that joins years later, That being said the 90 Days of inactivity and your account gets flagged for a rename sounds like a great idea although maybe a longer timeframe is needed.

I would rather the Devs invest time into something more productive then this idea.
Got my name. :D

It's not right that every time your generation doesn't get what they want they call for a rule change in order to accommodate their own needs. Stop acting so self-entitled, the world owes you nothing.

Wrong!!! It is entirely right that you call for change in these circumstances. In fact it is necessary. This is the point of society, civilization and democracy. Without each generation calling for change to the rules they dislike, we'd still be burning witches and jailing gay people.
Did you know level 91 is the halfway point to level 100? This means that a softcore character dying ONCE at level 85+ can lose many days of progress.
