Character names clashing
|
Currently, all the names ever created including legacy ones cannot be used ever by someone else. If I'm correct, this continues after open beta, even as far as 10 years later. This is bad in my opinion. With 10 years of names no one is going to get the name they want. I propose a change in the database to tie character names to account names, similar to Diablo 2 and 3. That way everybody can have the name they want. It has to be implemented before open beta preferably. Anyone else with me?

hmmm...there are differences between the games that may be the reason for this...but im not sure. i dont mind the idea but dont really care either way.

NO
NONONONONONO AGAIN NO Having a unique name is one of the things to strive for in this game, as it was in D2. What you're suggesting is a terrible, horrible idea. If they were to do that it would piss me off so badly I might just quit.... seriously. BAD IDEA ..... Note to GGG..... Remember.. you said it yourself.. people are vain... your plan is to bank on that vanity with the microtransactions store.... Vain people want unique names! Never wrestle with a pig. You'll only get muddy, and the pig likes it! Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience! Several ways to alleviate this:
1) let us have last names 2) do like guild wars and put a number at the end of every character name that can be hidden. 3) or exactly what the op said tie it to forum name(though I'm less a fan of this one) |

All bad ideas..
There's nothing wrong with the way it currently is. Sounds to me like the OP is butthurt because he didn't get the name he wanted. That's life, GET OVER IT! It's not right that every time your generation doesn't get what they want they call for a rule change in order to accommodate their own needs. Stop acting so self-entitled, the world owes you nothing. Never wrestle with a pig. You'll only get muddy, and the pig likes it!

I wouldn't mind it or what ArrogantMoose says.

" Wow this is my first post because I think it's an important enough issue that can make or break the game. Where's the hostility and assumptions of "your generation" coming from? Why does it matter what names other people have? The only change to my initial suggestion is to have unique names for each new ladder season, then fall back to tying to account/unique ID when those characters demote to legacy after season ends. Otherwise, if the game gets popular, after 6 months to 1 year and beyond, all the names you will see are xwitchx, xxwitchxx, xxxwitchxxx, reoguihnarogg, rgerhehrgerh, hjfherharh, etc and there won't be people playing. This is NOT an MMO. Last edited by Googleplex#4433 on Oct 27, 2012, 11:48:25 AM

I've got to say I cannot comprehend GodlyMe's utterly hostile reaction to the suggestion at all. Feels like there's some personal emotion at play here, judging by his posts. :S
While I don't have strong feelings in either direction, the assurance of being able to have a character name without X tries sounds like a decent idea. This signals the end of a post. I apologise to everyone who had to suffer through it.

I dont want people with the same names either...
I think its a pretty bad idea. There is a certain segment of online gamers who play to make a name for themselves. They want the highest DPS, the most kills the best gear the PVP champ a respected trader etc... People have alot of history behind there names and some people have been using the same name in games for 15+ years. How would you feel if you used a name for 15+ years... you stake your name out... make a name for yourself and then you get 10 guys copying your name? and it will happen, in ever game that allows this people copy well known peoples names and then try to scam... do bad things and other such stuff to TROLL the real owner. |

You do have a point, stickman. I understand the frustration coming from someone bluntly copying your character's name.
On the other hand, it's just as well possible that a name someone's been using since forever online is already taken by someone who just entered the beta earlier and came up with it randomly. Like I said however, I don't really hold strong opinion in the matter: personally I'm certain I'll have a few non-used character names in stock no matter how many groups of infinite monkeys there are taking up random names in the game. This signals the end of a post. I apologise to everyone who had to suffer through it.
