Character names clashing
|
Put me down as a no for multiple characters with the same name.
I played City of Heroes for years. Characters were NEVER deleted unless the player did it himself, and that includes any created during free trials. Yet even after five years, with a little creativity, I was still able to come up with a fitting name for each and every one of my 75+ characters. In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.

I hope this is implemented so then I can copy somebodies name and say naughty things in chat to besmirch their name, that'll teach them to be better than me at video games.

"Clashing" isn't the right word for it.
You don't "own" a character name until you register it. It's not as if someone took the name that you thought of, it's someone getting there before you. Compare it to making a forum post: You're not the OP if you didn't post first. However, you're remain free to make a new, different topic. Also with identical names being displayed in chat comes the inevitability of malicious impersonation. Lady Luck Loves a Trust Fall

Unique char names are awesome.

If I am ever in the position to make a paid league I'm going to make it so everyone that logs in is called Nigel or Bruce. ;-)
Ascension tied to Lab is the worst thing GGG has done...apart from GGG's philosophy on Trading. Oh and Gambling Loot boxes. And selling out to tencent.
I used to love GGG. I supported to ensure GGG remained independent, now I just wish I could get my money back. -_- |

I understand you want to play by the name Thor. But what I was trying to show you was that you can play as Thor with a minor change. Thor_God_of_Thunder, Thor_The_Almighty, or try THor, THOr, tHOR.
I thought I was the only one who knew about Thrud the Barbarian. Guess what? Thrud is long gone. I could play with the name, or I can move along because they are not going to change the game for something as simple as this. Even if it is extremely important to you personally. |

Sorry if it has already been brought up (I haven't gone through the posts) but a good solution could be to delete the characters who haven't logged in for a certain time period AND who are below a certain level.
Alternatively instead of deleting the character just incase it is actually being used as a mule or something similar perhaps the characters name could be generated into something else so it frees up the name for someone who actually plays the game. Edited my post as I realised I didn't think about that. It makes sense though, people that haven't played the game for over a year are most likely not coming back, and it's even more likely they registered their character names a year ago and have forgotten about this games existence.
It worked fairly effectively in Runescape (laughable game, I know). However the period of time the account was inactive was considerably longer than one year. This could also be the case for PoE. One year was just an example. Last edited by guvnor#1417 on Jan 21, 2013, 4:31:26 AM
