Character names clashing

No... No... I no like
To those who keep posting "just spend 2 seconds to come up with a unique name" - no offense but, have you ever been on the internet before?

There's 3 major problems with just telling people to come up with a unique name:

The most obvious to me, people won't. Why would your average internet user spend 10-60 seconds coming up with a unique name, when they can just add n number of x's before and/or after a name and be done? You're GOING to see these names, regardless of how "cool" you think unique names are. The question is, do you want to see a few xXNewbXx names around, or do you want to see every other player with a name like this?

And please don't reply with "it won't happen" - anyone whose been around the internet, especially in F2P games, can tell you - while the current CB crowd might not do this, the huge number of OB players will, and they will out number CB players dramatically. In a few years, names with X's will be the norm because it's easier to think of xxxxThorxxxx than actually come up with a name that's not taken.

Secondly, some people have used names with friends and clans and other groups for years. I've used "Player" for over a decade. I have two choices, role a unique name that will be difficult for my friends to spell and no one I currently know will recognize, OR add an x before my name. I went for the latter, it's easier on every one I know. When I make a new character, it'll get another x. And on and on.

Thirdly, unique names don't give you additional protection from having your name stolen. On the contrary, it gives you LESS protection.

After all, lets say you go by the name: SomeGuy

Lots of people learn about you, perhaps you stream or you've gotten a reputation for being really helpful to everyone. Yay for you, SomeGuy!

Well, what name will you go by when you role a new character?

Because I just met xSomeGuyx, he says he's you, maybe he is? Oh wait, he's trolling me? Wow, SomeGuy, you're a jerk, I hope you die, I'm going to tell all my friends never to invite you to a party.

Is that likely to happen? Who knows, the internet does love to troll popular people. But the point is quite clear: if your account name was visible, it couldn't happen, you'd be known by SomeGuy (accountname) and when xSomeGuyx (otheraccountname) shows up, there'd be no mistaking him for you.

I've been on the internet for 20 years & you just sound butthurt that someone has already chosen your highly unoriginal username of choice and typed up a big melodrama to encapsulate it.

Ad hominem.

As my post clearly points out, the suggestion here is not a solution to the problem (I'd even still use x's), however, it will alleviate the problem from being as large as it will be.

You presented no counter argument, except to flame/troll. Congratulations, you just proved my point.

And now you've resorted to talking complete and utter nonsense, well played.

My bad, thought in 20 years you might have been a bit more educated:

You can quote wikipedia all you like you're clearly upset that somebody has taken 'your' username which you've used for 'over a decade'

I find that the truth always shines through.

In any event, if anyone would like to actually respond to what I posted, please feel free. I'd be happy to discuss any counter arguments people think make this a bad idea.
Unique names only.

Period.
