Character names clashing
|
Okay, as an act of good faith, I'm prepared to release one of my reserved names to the OP. The choices are (remember, only one will be released):
Spatula_Failsafe SchwaffleBerryShortcake (it pains me to offer this one, but if it keeps the peace, so be it) CareBerry_RainbowCakes These are all actual (lvl 1) characters, that I planned on using in OB. Generosity, meds, who knows? Either way, this is a one time offer! |

" Yes he is. If more than one player can have a name, its not unique, by definition, now is it? Lets recap, shall we: googleplex tried to create a character and found the name was already taken. Instead of SIMPLY MAKING ANOTHER CHARACTER WITH ANOTHER NAME, he comes here to propose that the devs waste resources on changing the naming database in such a way that grants him the ability to have the name he wants. And then admits that he'll "just add a couple of x" so he can have the name he wants. Which apparently isn't good enough for him either. I'm so incredibly sad that I have to name my character SSJ7Vegeta because SSJ6Vegeta was already taken....

I can see ur concern but at the same time I don't agree with you...People should not be stripped of there character name for not playing for idk lets just say 6months. You can get for example the name purity easily if you want it...XxPurityxX, _Purity_, X_Purity_X ect there are also other clever ways to get a name you like

" I think part of the reason it's good to let names be account bound - though - is to minimize the number of xx, _, etc. that a used in name making. It's this simple, if you can use any name once on your account, you're much more likely to put in names that don't include underscores or X's because it's easy for you to come up with names unique to your own account. When you have to repeatedly try to get a name, because all the names you're trying are taken, you're much more likely to just go with __xX before and after your name. And the community as a whole benefits from not having to see x_xThorx_x etc. everywhere just because people couldn't be bothered to keep trying names till they found one not taken. |

" Fine, let's see... " No, people will, YOU won't. There are so many words and names in so many languages, it is really not that difficult to come up with something unique. " Again, you're elevating your personal problem as if is it affects everyone. Had you chosen something more unique at the start you could have easily transfered here using the same name. Also, you're still pretending that 'Player' and something unintelligible like 'Hfasjkfhakjbgag' are the only options available. They're not. " This is the only bit that's not just based on your personal preference. However, I disagree with that one as well. If you have a friend called Batman, you're less likely to confuse him with xxXBatmanXxx, on the other hand having fifty Batmans around, and having to look at the second part of his handle to see if it really is the one you know would get annoying really fast. Not to mention you'd have to remember the account name of each one which could get potentially confusing if you knew several people with the same char name. |

" Please read my post more clearly, I reject this response in it's entiretly for the very reason I made in the original post (brief recap: if it didn't happen, it wouldn't already be common place to use x's or _'s in names; but it is common, therefor you're wrong). " I agree, they're not, but you entirely missed the point I'm making, which is irrelevant to me as an individual (I don't know why people keep bringing this up). Heck, lets make an exception for me where I can NEVER have the name "Player" no matter what. My point remains, other people will still use x's or underscores to get a name they've used for a long time and friends know them by. I'm not attempting to eliminate this problem, I'm attempting to minimize it. " Well this, and everything else I've written, but go on... " Firstly, I'm not suspecting people will try to intimidate close friends of others (that would be way to difficult to pull off, a similar name would not be enough), so the first part of your argument is a red herring. Secondly, you wouldn't look at the second name if you started seeing the first a lot. You'd ALWAYS look at the 2nd name. That would, by default, be how you know people, and would allow you to identify people you know no matter what name they're on. Your third point is alleviated by my second. Since you're remembering people by account name, not character name, it's irrelevant if you friends with the same character names. You already know them by the account name. On the other hand, if you had a friend name Batman and another named xBatmanx it'd be MUCH easier to confuse them. So actually, you've given a 4th reason why using account names is better. |

I think the ability to name your character anything you want is good. Nothing more annoying than not getting a name you like or having to Butcher it by adding extra characters to the name you don't want.
I hope they will consider this soon. This TO ME is already a problem, and the player base is about to grow significantly.... I got the name I want most, but still, very annoying. |
