Character names clashing

While many points of view here are rightfully spoken, the possibilities of choosing a name are immense, in comparison to the more harm it would do to implement many of the ideas presented. The most optimistic idea is to have last names, if anything.
I too wanted some names that are taken, but i'm sure i can find some other to define me. |

" you are so right, just pick another name. But, not a thing wrong in the world with politely asking on a forum of a BETA game for the Devs to consider changing their stance on that particular issue. If they don't, NO BIG DEAL. Only people who got upset in this thread are Snobs who think it's their right to speak for GGG devs. I find the immaturity of some people in this thread to be disgraceful. But, all good. Some of us realize it's just a very silly albeit fun video game. And our lives have enough meaning where we have no need to insult others like children :) But sadly, a video game is all some people have in their lives for whatever reason, and it's evident in their behavior on such forums. oh well. Just proves the immense need for the ability to Ignore people on forums. Cause treating people with respect is obviously a lost art. Last edited by JerzeyDevil13#0071 on Jan 21, 2013, 2:32:40 PM

" Couldn't disagree more. This is something only the developers can comment on, but from my experience with programming, there should be two major hurtles for the developers to over come: They would need to modify how whispering works to include an account target. This could be a little tricky, and would probably require some server down time, but - depending on how OO the server is - shouldn't take more then a day to get working. They would also need to (probably) modify how characters are identified in the game. This might be linked with whispering and therefor both this problem and the former would be tackled in one fell swoop. This could be more complicated depending on how characters are identified for purposes like trading and item loot count downs, but since these features probably use a single object to refer to the character, it should just be a matter of modifying that object, making sure that all the parts continue to work with that object, and adjusting code as needed. At this point in their development cycle, they're not going to do that. But it may be worth while for them to look at it in the future. Depending on the code, this could be something that's in and tested in a week. Or it could be a lot more complicated. |

I have a character named Painis_Cupcake.
I'm the only one who has Painis_Cupcake. I will be the ONLY one who will have Painis_Cupcake! I got lucky with the name, and you'll take it from my cold dead fingers. PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.
Also PoE players: The [league mechanic] doesn't need to be nerfed, you just need to play a [current meta] build! And the winds will cry / and many men will die / and all the waves will bow down / to the Loreley |

" My witch twins Thunderquim and Quimsniffles scoff at Painis_Cupcake. I personally laughed however, even if my witches were unamused. "Wait, what did I just drink?" - Socrates

"\ Either way, advocating for reallocation of scarce and valuable dev resources away from content and onto something so trifling is asinine. Do you want a better game or the name you want? "Wait, what did I just drink?" - Socrates

Well unique names aren't necessarily the problem so long as inactive accounts get their names wiped. LoL currently has the largest online playerbase of any game, but every six months or so they clear out the names of accounts that haven't been active for some significant length of time (sending out an email beforehand of course, warning them the name will be lost of they don't play). If GGG does something similar that'll help a lot.
That being said, for the type of game this is, non-unique character names would be a better fit. We already have our unique account names we use on the forums and give to our friends, so that's not an issue. Our character names are just supposed to be names, so it shouldn't matter if they're unique or not. I personally don't like the idea of having numbers in a character's name, since it's supposed to be a name and not a gamertag (which is what our forum names essentially are). I have no clue why so many people are so strongly opposed to non-unique names. If you want to name your character something unique, then do it, no one's stopping you. If others want to give generic names to themselves that's their choice. And if some vile person happens to name one of their characters the same as one of yours? Well boo-hoo, you're probably never even going to see that person amidst the thousands of people online. Grow up. |

" You didn't answer my question: What does it matter if other people use xxx's in their names? |
|
" The only thing asinine here is your assumption that there is a name I want that I can't get, which is patently false, and that my suggestion does not make the game better when that is precisely what it does. The "resources" you're talking about could be as little as 1 dev, sitting down for a day changing the way 1 object works. Or it could be much more complicated. We simply don't know. So any such appeal is a waste of breath. |

" I did answer your question - in great detail, actually. Please read my post. |
