Character names clashing

Well unique names aren't necessarily the problem so long as inactive accounts get their names wiped. LoL currently has the largest online playerbase of any game, but every six months or so they clear out the names of accounts that haven't been active for some significant length of time (sending out an email beforehand of course, warning them the name will be lost of they don't play). If GGG does something similar that'll help a lot.

That being said, for the type of game this is, non-unique character names would be a better fit. We already have our unique account names we use on the forums and give to our friends, so that's not an issue. Our character names are just supposed to be names, so it shouldn't matter if they're unique or not. I personally don't like the idea of having numbers in a character's name, since it's supposed to be a name and not a gamertag (which is what our forum names essentially are). I have no clue why so many people are so strongly opposed to non-unique names. If you want to name your character something unique, then do it, no one's stopping you. If others want to give generic names to themselves that's their choice.

And if some vile person happens to name one of their characters the same as one of yours? Well boo-hoo, you're probably never even going to see that person amidst the thousands of people online. Grow up.

I would be shocked if they aren't doing this already. DBs are resource intensive enough without carrying storage for stale accounts.

I have no issue at all with culling stale accounts; this is SOP for any DBA. Modifying the system so that people who didn't get the exact name they wanted is a complete waste of resources, something I highly doubt GGG is inclined to do.

I rely on this naming system to making sweeping generalizations about people and their mental ability in a Jeff Foxworthian way..

- If your character name is preceded or followed by at least one 'x' that is not part of the actual spelling of your name... you might be an idiot.

- If your character name includes a horribly misspelled "variant" on a lord of the rings main character name... you might be an idiot.

- If your character name is a childish or obscene sentence fragment with no real wit invovled... you might be an idiot (yes, I'll be the judge on whether it's witty ;) )

- If your character name includes "leet" speak in any form... you might be an idiot.

Generally the above rules get waived if there is a subtle wit to the name in some way or I can tell that the name is in fact a self deprecating jab at oneself or a commentary on the poor quality of the other names around him/her.

TL;DR - I like the current system, please leave it. It may just be nostalgia but I like the idea that a character name I see is unique and that person thgouht of it first (or stole it from somewhere else first).

The only thing asinine here is your assumption that there is a name I want that I can't get, which is patently false, and that my suggestion does not make the game better when that is precisely what it does.

I fail to see how it's anything but a marginal convenience bonus for people who cant be bothered to simply contact their friends and let them now their char name.

Even it it takes a single dev a single day to implement this (unlikely, probably talking about high level changes to a very large production database), I'm guessing that it would be months before they have worked through their actively allocated priorities to even consider it.

It's not a meaningful change since there is such a painfully obvious workaround.

What does it matter if other people use xxx's in their names?

I did answer your question - in great detail, actually. Please read my post.

Unfortunately I have read all your posts here, and they're all about the same thing:

You didn't get your extremely unique name 'Player' so you're whining and trying to present your personal problem, your own inability of coming up with anything more original than sticking an x or two in front of it, as a general catastrophe. If you and others like you took three seconds to come up with something more original you wouldn't have this problem, so I really cannot justify giving two shits about your laziness.

I'm sorry.
Deal with it.

I couldn't care less what you guess, since you obviously don't seem to have a basis from which to make an educated guess.

Characters are already linked to accounts. Unless their database was designed by a first year college student, there should be no database changes to make at all.

The only changes would be software based, and then it just becomes a matter of their OO design and making some visual updates to the game.

The OO changes really depend on their design. If characters are identified in game using a numerical unique ID, then there's really very little updates to be made, except for how whispering works.

If the objects identify characters using their name's, then it gets a bit more complicated, but could still be as simple as updating whispers and changing object identifiers to include the account name.

But it could also be way more complicatd. Anyone who suggests they have any clue how hard it would be is only expressing their own ignorance of programming. We don't know how they programmed it, so we can't comment how much time or effort it would take.

ANY assessment of how long it would take that doesn't come from the devs is just silly.

Didn't take long for you to stop addressing the points and just accuse me of whining.

It's okay, your post made me laugh, in the one hand claiming that you've read all my posts, and in the other completely disregarding the fact I posted I'd use X's in my name either way.

Any way, off to pay attention to people who actually have arguments. =)

So with your logic, I assume the most idiotic person would have a character name of "xXs4wr0n_p0o_fl1ng3rXx"? :P
PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.

Also PoE players: The [league mechanic] doesn't need to be nerfed, you just need to play a [current meta] build!

Well said bro. This clown and the few others harassing and trolling people in this thread over a SIMPLE suggestion is absurd, immature, and a big reason why a IGNORE button is desperately needed on these forums.

He talks about "whiny" and "self-entitled" behavior, when its his posts that are the very definition of such behaviors. Immaturity comes in all ages. Just PM a CM and ask for him to be ignored. Cant hurt, that's for sure :)

You're apparently looking for someone to just agree with you.

You;ve also yet to give one compelling reason for GGG to allocate resources to changing the database for something that doesn't even qualify as a problem.

It's best not to feed trolls at all, just ignore them entirely.

I have confidence that this community has players willing to debate the merits of a particular feature, and not just accuse those that don't agree with them as being "whiners."
