Is it really that bad to cancel a trade and accept a higher offer?
" Oh, come on, don't be so naive. You take things way too much to heart. The fact that there is "money" in this world (the real one) already helps propagate the idea of "take advantage of others." How do you think people get rich? It's time to open your eyes and figure out what humanity is doing to itself and why it isn't stopping. Since you're wanting to get into this, I'll start first: Global warming, you know why it is happening and why it hasn't been stopped? You know about the cars that run on clean energy such as hydrogen? Well, they never saw the light of day because oil companies didn't let it happen. How about the light bulb? Did you know that everything has planned obsolescence? When the light bulb was first invented, and it burned for too long, the inventor of it (forgot who) was thrown out of the U.S. because they knew that this wouldn't be a profitable business; they (the companies) needed something that people would constantly buy. A light bulb that burns for 100 years is certainly of no use to a company (there is such a light bulb, actually, and you can google it if you don't believe me). So what happened to the guy who invented it? He got sent out, given a pension, and barred from inventing in the U.S. Instead, he took his shit to Britain. Back to cars: Do you even know how cars began? It's all because of a couple companies that took advantage of people. They bought out public companies just so they could destroy them (literally), such as railroads, public transportation, even those that were half-way to completion, and when they got found out, they quickly combined forces to oppose the courts resulting in them being fined around $2000 dollars. MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANIES (this was in the first half of the 1900s). How is that fair? That's because they were doing things in self-interest. Those companies were afraid cars wouldn't be popular. Oh, but they sure made them popular: they forced the very idea of having cars into everyone's head to the point that everyone had one. I can go on about printers and how their ink costs a shitload yet the printer itself is cheap (Which one are you going to be replacing more often and paying for more often?) We can even go on to talk about cigarettes, and their unethical, immoral practices. Surely they don't kill people--at least that's what the tobacco companies kept saying for DECADES. Seriously, bro, open your eyes. The world isn't what you think it is. And there's a good saying: if you're not part of the solution, there's good money to be made in prolonging the problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EewGMBOB4Gg http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeitgeist:_Addendum @SamBaLam Interesting story. The only difference is that I was partied with the guy, but not in the same instance. I really think it's whatever, but I'm surprised at the amount of butthurt I see from this. I mean seriously, it's a game, who cares? I know what the world is and am aware of the things you speak of. That also only represents a select few of the population. Either way, none of that has anything to do with this situation. Also, just because the people in the examples you've given are complete a-holes doesn't mean you have to be. As it's been previously stated several times, conduct your business as you please and deal with the consequences. You are giving yourself a bad name to most of the people on here. Few agree with what you are doing. Such as life. You can't please everyone, but you can try to please the majority or tell them to eff off.
Edit: Sam made a comment up there about gamers not being what they used to be. This is very true. I grew up in the togetherness, help each other out "era" too. Things like this is the reason I tend to play solo and not trade very much. If you were someone I partied with all the time, your build required a Kaom's Heart, Soul Taker, Voltaxic Rift, etc, and I got one drop, I'd give it to you. However, later on down the road, I might need something as simple as a Town Portal scroll and you'd be quick to figure out how much I'm willing to pay you for it. Also, there is no need for your insults. You asked us for our opinions and I gave you mine. If you don't want opinions you aren't going to favor, you'd be better off not asking for opinions. Though, as I said before, you aren't actually looking for opinions. You are clearly looking for justification. " I wasn't even basing that towards anyone. To be honest I'm saying that who WOULDN'T take a better deal, you know? I was just saying I do believe in paying it forward, helping out others in need, I think it pays off in the end. But like I said about todays gamers, that just doesn't exist anymore :(. I miss the times of being able to group up and it felt like a real group..and this could be with people that I met online in this game, but we just got to know each other and played all the time using vent/skype whatever and having fun. Now it's all about 1-upping the next, doing shady stuff to get ahead, etc. It is just a game, I agree. I just think it's more enjoyable to play it the way I mentioned in my soliloquy. |

I see your point, generaldave, and I agree with cooperation and what not. The problem is that there are a lot more of "a holes" out there than you think. You can't trust everyone. I trusted a guy who sold me two vaal rebukes and kept asking me for more currency and would give me some stuff in return, but in the end, it ended up being me giving him over an exalt of GCPs and him breaking his promises on repaying me. So, that makes me wonder one thing: why should I trust anyone, anyway? Trust is a dangerous thing. Especially when that trust is built in a game where you have no idea what is going through the other person's mind. I trust real life friends, but even then, I end up giving more than they can ever give me. I'm an altruistic person, though, so I don't hold them liable for not being able to provide anything for me.
And SamBaLam, yes, I know you weren't. I was agreeing with you. I agree, take the better deal. There's nothing wrong with it. It's like a relationship: if you break up, you break up, so suck it up and move on. That's a valid point. You never know who you can and can't trust if you don't give them the opportunity to show you if you can or not. I also understand that there are very few players like Sam and I left, so I adapted to the situation by playing alone and for the most part only with what I get. I play a melee build and was lucky enough to get a Soul Taker drop in Docks, so I'm satisfied. A Bringer of Rain would be nice, but if I get one cool, if not oh well. The new 4-month leagues will be starting up soon where I won't have anything anyways.
Well, that's not entirely true. I do have one gaming friend that I've played several different games with over the years that I still play games with and we do give each other stuff. If he's not on, I solo it up. If I find something he would need, I still keep it and see if he wants it before I get rid of it. Edit: I like the break up analogy. It made me chuckle, but I still think it's in poor character because you did enter into an agreement. You were selling an item. You accepted the offer, agreeing to sell it. That's your fault, not the buyer's. Should be your loss. If the offer wasn't what you were willing to accept, then don't agree to sell it. Ask for what you want for it. I would agree with taking the better deal, if you hadn't already agreed to sell it to someone for a certain price. Edit 2 and slightly off topic, but I thought it was an interesting story that kind of goes along with current conversation in this thread: I was bored one day and watching global chat. Someone asked if anyone could give them a waypoint somewhere. I don't remember where. I invited them to a party and set up the town portal. When he went through it, I told him "Happy gaming." and left. He added me to his friends list and chatted for like an hour. The next day he asked for a couple more waypoints. A few days later, I helped him kill Vaal. I'm thinking this guy is only going to whisper me when he needs something, but oh well. I enjoy helping others. Then one day, he randomly invited me to a party and gave me a 4-link Searing Touch. These types of gamers do still exist. Just insert a clause in all your sales thread: "Assuming I accept an offer another higher offer will always be preferred." Problem solved.

@McNig - You misunderstand me.As I stated in my earlier post on page 6, which I thought you read considering your reference to earlier posts, there are no rules at all. Therefore one can break deals as one pleases. This, however, does not mean that it is not shitty behaivior. We are in a game and therefore there are no rules to guide us except those the developers have placed on us and our moral compass, much like Thaelyn is arguing.
I am mearly arguing out of a moral perspective, since that is what the original poster asked about. He was wondering why people became "butthurt". Ignoring a stated deal is definitly something that people can take offence at and therefore it is inconsiderate to act in such a way. A deal is generally sealed once both partners are of equal intention, which is before the trade-window is even opened. If one looks at the a theory as to why people become upset, linked below, you have to kind of expect people to become angry when you ignore them in that manner. Also, the customer can loose more things than just time. Ponder that the customer is of a stronger character and, even though he gets a better offer on the item he wishes to buy, stays to the original deal with the original seller. Or, perhaps more likely, has or sees other offers which he ignores or says no to since he has a deal. There is actually a latin motto about this subject, "Pacta sunt servanda", which in general terms mean that a contract is law between parties. I can't really say that the rather anarchistic approach people are arguing for is morally correct. Though, if people know of this anarchistic and unwritten rule, that a deal is not sealed until it is concluded, then they themselves have accepted the circumstances and can't really take offence. I guess this is a golden example of the treat other as you would be treated yourself-philosophy. http://www.pon.harvard.edu/wp-content/uploads/images/posts/emor5.pdf | |
@OP
"Dick move" or not... I dont agree with what you did as I stand by my word. But then again you would rather want some other currency than what offered and I understand that. I had a few episodes when selling some stuff where I wanted GCP's but got offered other currency but at the same value. I told those people that I would hold on to "their" item but they had to trade to the right currency before trading with me. I could go MF while they were getting the right currency instead of me sitting in trade chat trying to do it myself. I even got higher offers in some cases but did hold on to the item and the Price that weas agreed and that have worked out well... I got the currencies I wanted and they got their items. |

It's really painful to stick to a trade after you receive a much better offer but I think there really is no choice. I wouldn't want anyone (including myself) to think of me as someone who doesn't honor agreements out of greed.

" personally, I cannot be dishonest in the virtual world if I'm honest in the real one, or vice versa. some people can completely separate their "in-game" image from who they really are. I can't. you might disagree with me here, but I think that's the way it should be. Alva: I'm sweating like a hog in heat Shadow: That was fun Last edited by johnKeys#6083 on Oct 12, 2013, 5:32:22 AM
