Is it really that bad to cancel a trade and accept a higher offer?

simple rule the higher ofer beats the lower ofer the rule of nature kill or be killed

This is what can be expected with the grand trading system we have here that drives the game.

I would prefer something where we never have to talk...seller or buyer.
The common courtesy is to follow through the trade after you agree with the other party to trade. It should be your responsibility to seek the best offer available to you and accepting the trade is a kind of a "gentleman contract".

If you decline from the transaction AFTER agreeing to it, you are essentially trading some "trust" away for a bit more profit. It is good for you in the short term, but harmful in the long run.

Might have been a bit of an over reaction from the other party, but you should expect a cold shoulder from the same person if you traded with him again...you essentially wasted his time for nothing. It happens, but it is something you should try to avoid the best you can.
If I'd ever got a chance to make a game, it would definitively not cater to the players that want the game to change instead of themselves improving in it.

so the game is the culprit?

Thoughts on it?

I just got some butt-hurt replies after I accepted a trade and cancelled on them because I got a better offer (unexpectedly). Am I supposed to be having a guilt trip because of this? Lol. Just curious about what others have experienced and how they feel about it.

Think about it this way - if you were selling real life items (instead of trading in a game) and agreed on a deal, you could be sued for breaking a contract.

I would suggest not agreeing to a deal until you are happy with it. Once you agree, stick by what you say, or risk alienating a lot of people.

I've had times where I made an offer and the response was: "I'll consider it, but I'm holding out for a better offer." I completely respect that kind of honesty.

The "sorry, even though I agreed on it, I've got a better price.." responses are not people I would want to trade with again. Just my opinion, though.

Unless the offer is massively higher i dont back out, no reason to, if it is i just tell the guy that i just got offered X for the item from Y person.. if they can offer more i start a bid, if not i say im sorry and i back out, if you just act nice and explain why you are doing it they will understand and you wont get any hate.

I don't really understand all these people saying the person who accepts the higher offer is "evil", a "scumbag", a "dick". All the first trader has to do is reply to an ad on trade chat. He doesn't have anything invested in this trade yet. What has he got to be mad about? The seller is investing the time and effort into selling his item for the best price. And if someone was willing to offer a higher price in the first place, then chances are the first guy knew the item was worth more and was hoping to rip the seller off.

1. noone called anyone evil or a scumbag
2. yes he does have something invested, namely his time and effort
3. there are no fixed prices, no fixed currency piles, thus your argument about something being ¨worth more¨ is invalid too.

to further answer your question (what has he got to be mad about?) read the thread more carefully.
1. I read the entire thread, and yes those words have come up.
2. From responding to an ad and going to a1n? Really, that takes no time or effort.
3. Since there aren't fixed prices, things are worth what people will pay for them.

Most of the people getting mad in this thread seem to be equating the situation to ripping a friend off IRL, when that's not even comparable. It's more like trading with some random guy you met on Craigslist - you'd probably come into it without expectations about him since he's a shady guy you met on the internet.
