EA killed for "Surprise Mechanics", TencentGGG slides on "Mystery Box". How?

PoE is also an 18+ game (or younger with parental consent)--unlike other games rated T or whatever. Given that we're only talking about cosmetics, I don't take issue with giving adults the choice to gamble or not with things like this. For some people it could be fun, and as grown adults I don't think it unreasonable that they should be able to choose if they want to engage with the lootboxes or not (I don't, but that's just my choice).

Inviting children to gamble is its own issue, but PoE isn't rated for children to begin with.

Tbh i can't think of anyone who doesn't have both loot boxes and generic gaming currency you buy 500pts of.

EA doesn't do points, you just buy their stuff with money. Except for in Apex Legends, that game has it's own currency. But it's a horrible CoD Halo wannabe, and is sort of irrelevant. They just made it as a joke to get money from all the people pretending they didn't like Fortnite because it's popular.

? Battlefront did crystal points or whatever, Fifa has fifa points like i'm not sure what EA games you are thinking of but EA's main titles usually use cuck points AFAIK

Edit: Infact I think you are just making a statement based on nothing :p don't defend EA they earned their reputation for a reason.

I imagine the reason Tencent "gets away" with mystery boxes, to the tune of only undercurrent grumbling rather than the explosion of bullfuckery that is EA, is because Tencent doesn't charge you sixty dollars for the game PLUS twenty dollars for three or four DLCs per game PLUS a full-up freemium-style MTX store PLUS rampant lootboxes. They restrict themselves to the freemium store and the boxes, which doesn't feel great due to the price bloat over the years but is still better than the EA thing of "which monetization scheme should we use, EA CEO Guy?", and EA CEO Guy saying "MONEEEYYYY!!!1! DDXX" prior to buying another refugee to sacrifice to his infernal masters.

I still don't understand this "gambling" crap. Maybe it's because I don't understand how people get scammed in this game I don't know but everyone's acting like loot boxes are exactly the same as walking into a casino, but in that context they aren't gambling. There's a 100% chance you're going to lose 100% of your money. You just hope to get some worthless cosmetic in return.

You can't trade the cosmetic. You can't sell it to somebody else. It doesn't change anything in game. By all definitions it's worthless. So why is giving a company some cash for a cosmetic, which is just showing your support, suddenly gambling? It isn't GGG's problem if you keep buying mystery boxes. You're the one spending the money. It shouldn't be a regulatory board's problem either. Once again, you're the one spending the money

This is 100% spot on. The rest is argument from emotion. And many of those arguing on the unethical/gambling side have a crap ton of challenges this league meaning you are playing this game a lot. Seems disingenuous.

No it isnt "spot on"

The GGG loot boxes are predatory, and they capitalize on gambling urges.

There is no duplicate protection, and items are weighted in the box. The more you purchase, or gamble, the more likely you will get an undesirable result.

If the box contents had equal chances, and something to do with duplicates, maybe I could give them the benefit of the doubt.

I do think that GGG understands the basic premise of the mystery box is unethical, which is why the latest version allows you to do something with the first dupes.

As I said previously earlier in the thread, having 18 sin gauntlets feels bad, looks bad, and isnt the best way to make money off the players.

They have to stop this, or add some additional protections. Sure people have to have some self control, and choice plays a role, but that no excuse for a developer to prey on its customers.

EDIT: GGG should offer a "Buy the whole set" option at a discount.

So 38x30 = 1140 points. Obviously this is too steep a discount, so perhaps say 2000 points? $200 for the whole box seems reasonable. Maybe even 2500 is realistic. At least this way you dont have wasted dupes, or the feeling of missing out on an item without having rng mess with real money.

"How does Tencent, just as massive as EA, get away with this? I'm actually curious."

The difference is that POE is f2p, you dont have to pay single dime and the game is available for you completely free. Unlike EA games nor Activision etc.

In my eyes i hate microtransactions from the bottom of my heart, its disgusting how these big game companys with p2p games does them.

But when we are talking about free to play game, i dont care. They can add any microtransactions they want as long its not p2w.

Ive spent 100+ euros on poe just to support the devs, i did not have any need to spend that money on them.

But im glad that theyre providing this great game for us completely free and so should you.

You believe there should be no consumer protections? Bartenders that can serve without limits? No loan approval parameters? No business safety requirements (like OSHA)

Gambling itself is an issue, but standing on the side of predatory business is quite another.

GGG can, and should, do better

How? Both are loot boxes.

EA says it's a surprise, GGG says it's a mystery.

path of exile doesn't have loot boxes cosmetic only

Contents dont matter. This isnt a P2W debate.
