EA killed for "Surprise Mechanics", TencentGGG slides on "Mystery Box". How?

Topic body.

I'm still a little unsure how there is universal condemnation and hilarity on EA's defense of loot boxes, yet GGG seems to get a pass on theirs.

If EA said they were not gambling, but rather mystery boxes, I still feel like everyone would have laughed at them.

How does Tencent, just as massive as EA, get away with this? I'm actually curious.

How? Both are loot boxes.

EA says it's a surprise, GGG says it's a mystery.

I agree it is strange on the surface but here is my take:
1) EA's loot-boxes have things that actually help you in-game. Mystery boxes only contain cosmetics
2) EA's loot-box rewards cannot be obtained by direct purchase. All the items in the mystery box can (as far as I understand them).

I have never bought a mystery box from Tencent or a loot box from an EA game so maybe I am missing some other nuance.

I also play Heroes of the Storm and I think their loot-boxes are ok also. Rarely do I see people complaining about them. They only have cosmetics and everything can be bought directly for a reasonable price. If you get a duplicate you get crafting material to make anything else you want.

I suppose there is a cosmetic/P2W angle you could take, but the entire premise of that hearing that EA embarrassed themselves was regarding the gambling nature of the contents, regardless of what the contents were used for.

This is where I'm a bit confused. The contents in both cases are still a resultive gamble.

Yeah, i won't argue with you. It definitely is "give us money and you get a dice roll for something of non-transferable value." I personally feel like anything that has them should come with an age restriction like a casino + regulated like a gambling product and not like video game.
They are the same thing. The only thing that makes loot boxes NOT gambling is that you cannot profit from it. Earnings have no real world value. Other than that, they are basically a digital slot machine.

Uhh that's not how it works.

In order for it to be considered a gamble all you need is a wager or entry, risk or chance, and a prize.

It isn't for being a lootbox, EA were trying to wriggle out of it being gambling by labelling it as a surprise mechanic hence the vitriol, everyone else just calls them loot boxes and calls it a day.

Like this is just false equivalency

Edit: also nobody gets a pass for loot boxes pretty much everyone that has them regularly gets stick from some angle or other about how shitty they are but there is a difference between running loot boxes to fund your game and telling a group of legislators that your loot boxes are infact surprise mechanics because you don't want them inhibited.
