EA killed for "Surprise Mechanics", TencentGGG slides on "Mystery Box". How?
" So if EA said it was a mystery box that would have been ok? Or are you saying that both loot boxes are gambling regardless of what you call them (my take actually) "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." - Abraham Lincoln Last edited by DarthSki44#6905 on Jul 25, 2019, 5:18:58 PM

" I'd have to look at GGG's loot boxes a bit more to give a solid answer but I don't care about loot boxes and I'm not going to bother with it. The biggest one was already mentioned, EA's provide an advantage and you need to buy a loot box to get the item. Mass Effect 3 was the last game I played by EA that had them and got a bitter taste them. When the only way to even get the upgrade is to sit there and gamble for it it's a problem. The fact that it's a P2W mechanic in a paid game is besides the issue but does designate the difference between apples and oranges. I know you do have to wait to purchase the GGG items individually but as there is no game-play advantage you are not put aside by waiting for individual items. I don't know if GGG lists the items in their boxes or the odds. It's not just that it's a gamble so much as the forced gambling. Last edited by teknik1200#3150 on Jul 25, 2019, 5:29:50 PM

" Cosmetic vs Boosts doesnt matter, it's how you obtain them that makes it a gamble. GGG does list contents and odds, but that doesnt impact the actual process taking place. My overall point is, that if it was Chris in front of, lets say the US Senate, and he said "No Senator, its not gambling, our customers receive a box of mystery contents which is fun" that would be quite the stretch of the imagination. " Actually their definition is even more vague, and regardless, the UK doesn't speak for the entire world. China, Korea, the US, just to name a few, have very different interpretations. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

It matters very little what they are called and I don't think paytowin content makes a difference. The whole circus about "surprise mechanics" was only to give the illusion that they are added for fun, not to nickel and dime the players.

As far as if it is legally considered a gambling mechanic or not, I could care less really, although I'd assume it should be considered as much. I'm more than happy to pay for content, but "lootboxes" don't really entice me to spend more / burn up points. I think if anything it will end in some form of legal tagging in some countries (like a "mature" rating), and nothing will change.
I think EA specifically has a problem with creating full AAA price games, then also include lootboxes, and ALSO include "pay to win" mechanics in those boxes. Oddly enough, that combo seems to be over what most gamers / target audience can stomach and tada... gets them publicly pilloried. |

"First fixed. Second: 1. Because What GGG gives us is night and day when compared to EA's offerings. Cosmetics over gameplay enhancing items. 2. GGG releases the items from said mystery boxes into the shop about a month or so after the next league. 3. EA in the eyes of the unwashed masses is literal hitler/satan where GGG is for all intensive purpose an indie darlings. Last edited by AldarisGrave#7629 on Jul 25, 2019, 6:05:10 PM

" Can you help me understand why you dont think Tencent matters? EA is also a publisher. And Tencent doesnt have the greatest rep. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

"Because untill otherwise Tencenct doesn't equate into this conversation. It's well known/documented that EA is very, very dominating with it's devs when coming to making games. |

" Lol please tell me what Tencent is known /documented to do. Inb4 I reduce your social score. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."
