EA killed for "Surprise Mechanics", TencentGGG slides on "Mystery Box". How?

Maybe it's because I don't understand how people get scammed in this game

Everyone, and that includes you and me, is at some time careless, complacent, overconfident and stubborn. At times, each of us becomes distracted, inattentive, bored and fatigued. We occasionally take chances, we misunderstand, we misinterpret and we misread. These are completely human characteristics. Because we are human and because all of these traits are fundamental and built into each of us, the equipment, machines and systems that we construct for our use have to be made to accommodate us the way we are, and not vice versa.

I don't see any problem with the mystery boxes in PoE - if you don't like them, don't buy them and wait till stuff is in the store. This is VERY different from loot boxes that contain stuff that can never be obtained in any other way and that give an in game advantage.

Or in other words - if you spend too much money on PoE mystery boxes then this is a case for seeing a doctor and not one where there should be any government regulation. In that case your threshold for being sucked into gambling schemes is so low that you need to do something about it.

No, that's why you don't. If you like everything in it though you're guaranteed to win.
Exactly, yes, that is why I don't gamble :)

But it's not just "liking" all the items, in abstract isolation, that's required to "guarantee a win". Liking things is easy; I like lots of things I'd never pay the asking price for. To win, you need to know you would have voluntarily paid $3 for any of those items individually.

You're talking about a common-sense definition of gambling, but speaking legally, the fact that all outcomes of the mystery boxes here are guaranteed to cost at least the price of the box itself (until there's a sale, which doesn't invalidate the legal argument) is GGG's most likely way "out" of a European gambling accusation.

If you pay $3 to spin a wheel and win something with a retail price of $1, you've lost a gamble. If you pay $3 to spin a wheel and can only win things that have a retail price of $3 or more, it's a lot more questionable.

That is, legally. Certainly not according to common sense.

It's more than spin actually.

I mentioned it a few replies ago, but the duplicate issue is really predatory, and that really cuts into the "worth" of subsequent boxes. Since you can see the chance rolls, its obvious to me that GGG wants you to hit a dupe, which is basically worthless, and roll again.

I think they finally realize this looks and feels fucking bad, and the latest mystery box and least has some use for dupes.

This is a joke right? I mean you either don't understand why dupes are in there or you are just not very smart in general. Without dupes the boxes wouldn't be possible. You want a use for dupes? Sure, but then the boxes HAVE to cost a lot more in return. If you don't understand this you better off not responding to topics like any longer. You can't have the cake and eat it too.
mystery boxes are basically gambling lootboxes ; i recently came back and was suprised to see it was still legal tbh.

seems like there are double standards in the industry.

did they at least remove the high possibility of getting doubles?

Coz this lot is already a subdued bunch, whereas EA tapping more tapping into the wider general population and vulnerable children.

Also, witchhunt mentality, cultural momentum.

Typical troll response. Go lick ggg some more.
I dislike rarity so much im almost quitting poe2. GGG.
I would view Mystery Boxes as predatory unethical IF you didn't KNOW that everything in them WILL be available later on.

Now I view them as... A grey area.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.
They're not horrible, just distasteful.

Paid gacha concepts in games are fundamentally predatory. Doesn't really matter how many mitigating factors you tack on. The basic mechanism of 'paid random valuable loot' is at its core designed to foster addiction.

How does GGG, get away with this? I'm actually curious.
First fixed.

Second:

1. Because What GGG gives us is night and day when compared to EA's offerings. Cosmetics over gameplay enhancing items.

2. GGG releases the items from said mystery boxes into the shop about a month or so after the next league.

3. EA in the eyes of the unwashed masses is literal hitler/satan where GGG is for all intensive purpose an indie darlings.

Im pretty sure the stuff in EAs loot boxes could be gotten with time playing the game (but its like 50+hours or something?) because i remember posting something about this vs league of legends needing tons of hours to unlock heroes

You cant get the stuff in GGGs loot boxes with any amount of time in game
