poll: the "like to trade" vs the "forced to trade"

Your poll is way too binary. I would consider that I like to trade, however I'm surely not here for trade more than anything else (I just quote your definition). And I don't feel forced to trade at all. So I can't answer your poll.

I often see that binary mindset about trading on these forums : if you're not using your own loots only, then you play path of economics/ trading simulator/ lioneye's watch sitting 24/7. Yeah sure.

This. The OP ignores (through unawareness or choice, I can't say) the fact that there exists a spectrum from the SFL players to the Trade Tycoon players. Most people are not either of these, but simply somewhere in between.

Pretty much my thoughts. I have been playing since closed beta and I see trade as a tool / part of the game. I don't hate it or see that I am "forced" to use it, it was built from the ground up as part of the game.

I have progressed a lot of characters into the high 70's and 80's without being "forced" to trade. I have farmed and crafted decent enough equipment to take care of my needs. At the same time when it does come down to farming and/or crafting a high level 6L versus trading for one, I will happily trade for it. Not because of being forced, but because I see that as a better method to obtain what I want, and often cheaper than crafting.

Does trade need a lot of work? ABSOLUTELY!!

There should never be a reason where I go look at the "Parties List" in-game and see almost nothing but WTS/WTB "parties". That does piss me off a bit, but it is because the trade chat sucks. I usually just look through the forums.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
I'm okay with trading, it doesn't take more than 2-5% of my gameplay time. But current trading pretty much blows without proper tools.

Also, as many people stated before - throwing quite a spectrum of players in one or two categories is not a way to go.

Neither.

I don't particularly "like" it - I like the results, not the actual PMing, spamming etc.

I'm not forced to either. I just choose to because I know if I didn't trade, I wouldn't be playing optimally.

So if you could play optimally without trade you would? I think that is exactly the issue that John is getting at.

You are indeed 'forced' to trade by definition. I think most people would agree that they want their character to be optimal, and there is currently only one way to do that with no other alternatives.

Yes, I definitely would trade. I cherish the idea that I may have something that another player wants/needs while he has something I am after - whether it be orbs or items. To make a MMOARPG that prevents trade in this situation is terrible game design! Unfortunately the trade in PoE is so underdeveloped that it is almost this bad.

Player interaction is the heart of an online game. Without trading, PoE moves much closer to a single-player game. And that's not what I am here for.
I remind myself playing at Diablo 2 doing hundred if not thousand of run to boss or various map and getting most of the time shitty item but knowing of the tiny possibility of having a fat loot.

In PoE the chance to get fat loot are bigger in trading than in doing pointless run to a boss who'll drop shit most 99.99% of the time.

So from time to time i buy stuff in poe.xyz and i find it cool.

I would prefer to play in self-drop only but it's kind of hard actually.. too much RNG on drop and i don't play enough to make it effective (don't have that kind of time anymore).

So yeah i feel forced to trade and as much as i like it in game that have a auction house to disposal i kind of hate it here.

I would like to see a kind of poe.xyz ingame system like the auction house in world of warcraft/Diablo 3 (rip)/other.

If there's not i'll continue to play probably but i won't have as much fun as i could have with an auction house.

Perhaps actual trader are against this auction house because the market would be overcharged with stuff from other people and that they'd have a tougher time to sell their stuff ? (They've the thrust and they don't want to open the market).
3: Refuses to trade. But it's the '2' side of the fence if you're being all binary.
I enjoy having the option to trade. I don't enjoy trade being the only viable option to move past byzantine RNG walls. I suppose that puts me in category 2.

Indeed. I don't care about trading being better than not trading. I just want it to be somewhat less tedious to progress without trading.

I choose to not trade because I don't enjoy bartering or haggling at all. If there was an easier way to trade I might consider doing it for essential skill gems or build-enabling uniques.

I am now level 70 trying to get a couple more chaos so I can get my cold resist from 51% to 77% and start mapping.

The last time I found an upgrade was when I was in cruel docks at level 48. This is now 22 levels without an upgrade. I have bought 5 pieces of gear. I play HC I have a page for old gear in case I die. So of the 5 piece that I replaced, nothing has dropped that would of been an upgrade to those even though I bought new pieces.

So from cruel dock to a dead Merc Piety and 22 levels later farming mostly Merc doc, not one drop was good for me. This game has big problems.

Can anyone PM me with good ways to make some currency... because drops are not the way to get the items you want, let alone the items you need.

Edit:
And to top it off I have sold 3 chaos worth the items from my store.
