From reading all the comments, I realized that most non supporter players are against desync, unrewarding grinding and the flawed endgame.
Most supporter player say "anyone that plays too much, will get bored eventually". Completely ignoring all the criticism and flaws.
I came to the conclusion that most supporters are in denial of all the current problems because they don't want to feel like they wasted money.
Maybe GGG only gets their suggestions from supporters? that would explain why they haven't fixed the issues they had 1 year ago when I stopped playing. The exact same issues everyone is saying btw (unrewarding grinding, bad rates and crappy chat/trading interface).

Eh, that's pretty coincidental. I just bought points instead of a pack because the only thing I wanted was stash upgrades. I don't think it matters much.
I have pretty much stopped playing, though. Supposedly the marauder is getting reworked, may check it out again when that happens.

You mean people that like the game despite its faults might also like the game enough to buy supporter packs? MIND BLOWN

The same reason people lose their passion for anything. You can only throw so many hours at something before you have to step back and take a break.
Look at how many hours Krip put into PoE, is it really surprising that he needs a break? Any game that I can put over a thousand hours into, that is a pretty sound investment right there. Sometimes you just have to take a step back, and come back later.
There is only so much to do in the game, after all.
I agree, a lot.
Pretty much my philosophy on the situation.

It's not one thing that leads to people losing their enthusiasm. It's several things all put together.
* Orb drops = shit. Never saw an eternal in many, many months of playing. They created the orb system for people to use currency for both trading and crafting, but everyone only uses it for trading. Low drop rates lead to hoarding, awful crafting leads to hoarding and people using orbs as gold.
* Item drops = number of items is ok, but the quality is lacking. You dont get a Soul Taker by dropping it, you get a Soul Taker by vendoring thousands of trash rares and uniques, then trading for Soul Taker. And while you cant have great items drop all the time, and I also understand that once you already have decent items, upgrades will be very few and far between and hard to drop and I'm ok with all that... but you cant troll players by having bosses on merciless drop low-level items and uniques like Araku Tiki and Karui Ward all the time. There has to be some kind of balance here.
* Crafting = gambling. It's 100% luck (RNG) based. You can burn through orbs it took you months to save up just trying to craft one item and you still wont get what you want. Crafting in PoE is broken and it's a "rage-quit generator", as I like to call it. Crafting and currency-drop rates are major issues.
* How about XP? Oh no, you cant play for XP either, since it's soooo hard to level up, to the point of being pointless. XP penalty depending on area level, 10% XP loss on death, all designed for no other reason but to make your life more miserable.
* Trading. For a game completely centered around trading, it uses an archaic system of trade chat that's impossible to follow, or even worse, having to ALT+TAB to a 3rd party website to buy/sell anything. For a player that doesnt enjoy trading, PoE is best avoided. In PoE, you are forced to trade.
GGG have put up too many artificial obstacles in players way. I play 5 builds (and want to do few more) and I have NO way of leveling them to where I want, it would take me the rest of my life to do that. I have NO way of gearing them the way I want to, it would take me the rest of my life to do that.
What I believe is that dedicated players will grind, they will put in the time and effort, but you have to give them something in return. PoE gives very, very little once you reach late-game.

How do you know any better? All of your characters are in standard with the dump economy.
I wonder what would happen if "hardcore" players had to have a little stat that showed up beside their characters saying how many times they had pressed alt-f4. I wonder if /deaths vs alt-f4 would be more similar than not.
Also, Mods, I thought there was this big movement to end this hardcore elitism.

D2 was a cakewalk, and no one cared because every build felt powerful.
And this is a core problem I believe behind the Dev's mentality. I'm willing to bet on it.
Anyone that comes into this thread I'd like to ask you this- Would you have more fun mowing down enemies and feeling powerful even if it's easier to achieve or frustratingly grinding for months for a small unrewarding gain?
One of those roads is enjoyable, especially as a hobby that shouldn't eat your time like a second job. The other is PoE's current state. And personally I'd be more eager to jump in everyday if I knew I wasn't going to yell at some point to a 1shot death after several hours of farming with nothing else to show for it.
Yea, I mean my healadin build used holy bolt to heal teammates and that was totally viable and powerful?
And a ninja star assassin, that was totally powerful?
Oh, and do not forget the Find Potion barbarian build; that one was great and totally great! No longer were my friends in need of buying potions for themselves during baal runs!
Maybe not the most powerfull builds on the block but fun and lol worthy even in hell. =P

Probably because repetitive content and grinding get old fast. There is only so much time you can put into a game before you get bored and sick of it.

Repetition.
Plain and simple.
There are a lot of arguments about this or that, but in any game, any gamer can tell you that they grew tired of it with time. There's only so much of the same thing you can do before you kind of walk away from it.
After all, it's said the definition of insanity is "repeating the same action with the same result and expecting a different outcome".

torchlight 2 currently has twice the amoutn of players as poe on steam. lol...
of course that number does not include the poe players who don't use the steam client, but the overall number has dropped a decent amount since the game was officially released and you rarely see poe in the top 10 anymore.
so yeah, just sayin...
