Why do some players lose their passion for PoE ?

None of your friends have played this game recently. Tell them why they should.

I don't know why they should! :'(
With the state PoE is in currently, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Many lewt.
Much desync.
Such rewarding.
Wow.
According to forum mods "sandwich" is considered an offensive word. Who knew?
After reading of the notorious interview of Chris with Athene I searched for it on YouTube... what can I say, all the answers are there!

They want the game to be unrewarding.
They want those they consider casuals to stay away from the game.
They want the endgame high level maps to be elite's property.
They want solo experience to be a PITA.

Well, at least now I know I can leave without looking back.

wow, can you link that interview?
In my opinion its inevitable that you will lose your passion with poe,in fact with every game.
That time comes when you reach your goals,or when you don't enjoy the ride to reach your goals.

For people the "goal" or why they play the game varies. Some don't like alts and roll one char and try to make him as powerful as possible, others like to experiment with builds and so on...

The "developer" wants you (in poe's case) to play as long as possible, for obvious reasons i will not adress here.To do that they have two tools in their disposal. Replayability and making end-game not an easily achievable goal.

I believe they did a good job with the first one.The skill tree and the races add a lot replay value.

But...end game is a different story.I consider end game:
1)Leveling past 90
2)Crafting
3)Obtaining top tier gear

To keep it short, the main problem is that its there but people can't reach it, and after they lose a lot of time they get frustrated, understanding that this end game is not for everyone,if anyone at all.Apparently this design is intentional.

In my case:
I started playing poe in the previous 4 month league(anarchy) midway,in the summer.Continued in standard cause my char was in the early 80's,didn't want to reroll in the new leagues. My goals were to reach 95+ and to craft 1-2 very good items. Now i am casual

I hate trade/crafting-desynch for hardcore-

IGN DGastone
POE has strengths and weaknesses for sure, desynch etc etc, but what really makes me hate POE at times is the horribly primitive trading, spammed channels, etc.
The self found part of the interview was terrible. Don't tell me that i enjoy trading, i don't. I hate trading in path of exile and i hated trading in diablo 2 always self found.
This is the interview.

Around minute 8 he explains why and how they want the game to be somewhat gated from the casual.

In my opinion they're doing it wrong, not creating a harcore experience but a frustrating experience.
It's obviously their call and I supported the game while I played.

At the moment I'm not even waiting for the 1.1 release.
I understand that it's impossible for them to satisfy everyone but I still wish I didn't feel repulsion when I open the game, because I really want to play it. It's just that the better I get to understand the mechanics the less I want to play.

D2 was a cakewalk, and no one cared because every build felt powerful.

And this is a core problem I believe behind the Dev's mentality. I'm willing to bet on it.

Anyone that comes into this thread I'd like to ask you this- Would you have more fun mowing down enemies and feeling powerful even if it's easier to achieve or frustratingly grinding for months for a small unrewarding gain?

One of those roads is enjoyable, especially as a hobby that shouldn't eat your time like a second job. The other is PoE's current state. And personally I'd be more eager to jump in everyday if I knew I wasn't going to yell at some point to a 1shot death after several hours of farming with nothing else to show for it.

Yea, I mean my healadin build used holy bolt to heal teammates and that was totally viable and powerful?

And a ninja star assassin, that was totally powerful?

Oh, and do not forget the Find Potion barbarian build; that one was great and totally great! No longer were my friends in need of buying potions for themselves during baal runs!
