All-round Newbie Guide! By KorgothBG.

Hello and welcome to my Path of Exile all-round newbie guide! This is my humble attempt to help out the new players of this amazing game. I’m not claiming that I know everything and if I’ve missed anything or gave wrong information please tell me about it and I’ll do my best to fix it.

Thank you Strajder16 for giving me the idea to make this guide!

First of all you need to choose your class!
There are 7 character classes in Path of Exile – Duelist, Marauder, Templar, Witch, Shadow, Ranger and Scion.
The main difference between these classes is their starting area in the Passive skill Tree. This makes it easier for some classes to specialize in one area but more difficult to specialize in another (i.e. the Duelist can make a great melee character but it would be hard for him to become a great spell-caster) Note that every character still can become everything! There are no restrictions! It’s just that some characters are better than others in certain things.

In Path of Exile there are 3 base attributes – Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence.
Strength – increases your life and % physical damage, it is related to the Armour based items, corresponds to the red color
Dexterity – increases your accuracy and evasion rating, it is related to the Evasion based items, corresponds to the green color
Intelligence – increases your mana and energy shield , it is related to the energy shield based items, corresponds to the blue color
The attributes are also required to equip some items (i.e. wands need intelligence; mauls need strength; staffs need intelligence and strength) The same goes for skill gems.
All character classes are also related to certain attributes ( the information below is quoted from GGG )

Strength (Red): The Marauder
[MUST REUPLOAD PIC]
Strength confers raw brute power, and is represented on weapons by high base damage. Strength armor pieces grant physical damage reduction. Monsters aligned with Strength generally hit hard and take many blows to defeat. Our Strength character class is the Marauder.

Dexterity (Green): The Ranger
[MUST REUPLOAD PIC]
Dexterity confers agility in combat, and is represented on weapons by faster attack speeds. Dexterity armor pieces grant the ability to evade enemy blows more often. Monsters aligned with Dexterity are nimble and difficult to hit, often attacking from a distance or with multiple weapons. Our Dexterity character class is the Ranger.

Intelligence (Blue): The Witch
[MUST REUPLOAD PIC]
Intelligence confers knowledge – of both arcane magic and deadly combat techniques. It is represented on weapons through improved critical strikes. Intelligence armor pieces grant the wearer a mystical energy shield which protects them from blows and can recharge when they are out of combat. Monsters aligned with intelligence are often weak spell-casters who can be dangerous if not immediately dealt with. Our Intelligence character class is the Witch.

Strength/Dexterity: The Duelist

The Duelist is a hybrid character class that excels at both Strength and Dexterity skills.

Strength/Intelligence: The Templar
[MUST REUPLOAD PIC]
The Templar is aligned with both Strength and Intelligence.

Dexterity/Intelligence: The Shadow
[MUST REUPLOAD PIC]
The Shadow is aligned with both Dexterity and Intelligence.

Strength/Dexterity/Intelligence: The Scion
[MUST REUPLOAD PIC]
The Scion is aligned with all three attributes.

Ok so which character should I choose?
Well I’ll give you some pointers .

Marauder – generally good as a though melee character using one handed weapon and shield or two handed weapons, he is also good as a totem user

Duelist – generally good as a melee character using one handed weapon and shield, two handed weapons or dual wielding two one handed weapons, he is also very good as a range character using bows.

Ranger – generally good as a range character using bows, she is also suitable for a one handed weapon and a shield

Shadow – generally good as a one handed weapon and a shield melee character who relies on critical strikes, good at using daggers and claws, he is also very good as a spell-caster and as a trap user

Templar – generally good as a though melee character using one handed weapon and shield or two handed weapons, he is also good as a totem user, he makes a good summoner, he makes a good spell-caster, he makes a good range character using wands

Witch – generally good as a spell-caster, she makes a good summoner, she makes a good range character using wands

Scion – she can be everything! The problem is that if you want to be let’s say melee character who uses two-handed weapons the Marauder or Duelist or Templar would be a better choice. So basicly she is good as a hybrid character. Beware making a hybrid character is not that easy and I don’t recommend to use Scion early on. This won’t be very hard since you must unlock the Scion class by completing the game with a different character.

Path of Exile has two permanent leagues from which you can choose – Standard and Hardcore

In Standard you don’t have to worry too much if you get killed because you will “resurrect” in the town (beware in the higher difficulty levels there is experience penalty when you die)

In Hardcore if you die your character will be transported into the Standard league.

Every 4 months there are 2 Special leagues. One corresponds to the Standard League and one to the Hardcore League. These special leagues always have special rules (some items are disabled, some items can be found only in the specific league, monsters have special properties etc. etc.)
When these leagues end the characters will be transferred to their corresponding permanent leagues – Standard and Hardcore.

There are also Race seasons. Every race season is composed by many Race events. Every race event is a league on it’s own. You start a new character and race against other players. Usually these race events are short (1-2 hours). You receive points for completing certain goals (like reaching specific level)
In the end of the race season you will receive item rewards based on your collected scores from the race events throughout the season. The items have an exclusive artwork but they are not the “best” items in the game.

Here you can see the statistics of your character (opened by the “c” key)
You’ll see the amount of life and mana that you have, the amount of strength/dexterity/intelligence your character name, level and the area that you are currently in.
It is divided into 4 cathegories : Offense, Misc, Charges and Defense

Offense
Here you can see the offensive statistics of your character.

Damage per second (or DPS) – this is the amount of damage that your character deals per second. It taking into account your minimum and maximum physical and elemental and chaos damage; your attack speed; your chance to hit; your critical chance and critical multiplier

Chance to hit – More accuracy rating means higher chance to hit. The % Chance to hit is based on your current level because it assumes that you’ll be fighting enemies with the same level as you. The amount is estimated. Some enemies will have more evasion rating so it would be harder to hit them and some will have less evasion rating so you’ll hit them more often. The maximum chance to hit is 95% it can reach 100% only with the Keystone(from your passive tree) called Resolute Technique

Attacks per second – this indicates how many attacks your character will perform per second.

Main and Off Hand damage – it shows the amounts of damage that you deal with your weapons. It is not the same as the Damage per Second.

Spell Damage – The same as Main and Off Hand damage but for the selected spell

Main and Off Hand accuracy rating – this affect your Chance to hit

Main and Off Hand attack speed increase – this affects your Attacks per Second

Main and Off Hand critical chance – this indicates what’s the chance to land a critical hit

Main and Off Hand critical multiplier – this indicates by how much your damage will be multiplied when you land a critical hit

Spell critical chance and multiplier - The same as Main and Off Hand critical chance and multiplier but for the selected spell

Main and Off Hand Stun Threshold Reduction – Higher values means that you’ll stun your enemies more often

Main and Off Hand life leech from physical attacks – this indicates the % of your physical damage that will be leeched to you as life (you’ll gain life) Note that the life is not given insantly but it regenerates over time. Also note that elemental and chaos damage won’t leech life(the only exception is if the skill that you use is linked with life leech support gem)

Main and Off Hand mana leech from physical attacks – this indicates the % of your physical damage that will be leeched to you as mana (you’ll gain mana) Note that the mana is not given insantly but it regenerates over time. Also note that elemental and chaos damage won’t leech mana(the only exception is if the skill that you use is linked with mana leech support gem)

Projectiles Fired – indicates the amount of Projectiles that your attack/spell will fire

Life gained per hit – indicates the amount of life that you’ll gain when you hit an enemy. If you hit many enemies at once the amount multiplies by the number of the enemies

Mana gained per hit – indicates the amount of mana that you’ll gain when you hit an enemy. If you hit many enemies at once the amount multiplies by the number of the enemies

Life Gained on kill – Indicates the amount of mana that you’ll gain when you kill an enemy. If you kill many enemies at once the amount multiplies by the number of the enemies

Mana Gained on kill - indicates the amount of mana that you’ll gain when you kill an enemy. If you kill many enemies at once the amount multiplies by the number of the enemies

Misc

Here you’ll see the amount of Increased Item Quantity and Rarity and the Skill area of effect radius increase.

Charges

Here you’ll see the amount of frenzy/power/endurance charges that you can have at once(3 by default) and the bonuses that you’ll get for each one. You get Charges by using some skills( i.e. power syphon; frenzy etc.) They will be active for a given period of time and then they will disappear if you gain a new charges while others are active the timer will reset back to the maximum

Defense
Here you can see the defensive statistics of your character.

Armour and Estimated Physical Damage Reduction – more armour means more Estimated Physical Damage Reduction. The % if damage reduction is estimated because it’s based on your level(see chance to hit) and because armour reduces more damage from small amounts of damage taken than fro large amounts of damage taken. So basicly if an enemy hits you 2 times per second for 200 damage per hit you’ll reduce more damage than if an enemy hits you once per second but for 400 damage. The DPS is the same the damage output is the same but the damage reduction is different.

Evasion Rating Chance to Evade – more evasion rating means more chance to evade. The % is estimated (see chance to hit and estimated physical damage reduction)Only attacks can be evaded(not spells) If an attack is evaded it will deal no damage to you.

Chance to dodge – indicates the % chance to dodge an incoming attack(or spell if you have the needed passive skill) Dodged attack(spell) won’t deal any damage to you. You can get dodge chance by certain Unique items and by some passive skills(from your passive skill tree)

Maximum Energy Shield – This indicates the amount of your energy shield. Energy shield acts as a buffer and will be depleted before your life when you take damage(chaos damage neglects that and takes directly from your life) If you don’t take damage for awhile your energy shield will be replenished.

Energy shield recharge per second - indicates the amount of energy shield recharged per second when you don’t take damage. Takes some time to start recharging

Fire, Cold, Lightning and Chaos resistance - this indicates by how much you’ll reduce any damage of such a source. Unlike Estimated Physical Damage reduction the % here are not estimated! Note that you’ll lose resistances when you go to higher difficulties (-60% in the merciless difficulty)

Chance to block attacks and spells – indicates your % chance to block incoming attacks or spells. If a spell/attack is blocked you’ll take 0 damage from it.

Block and stun recovery increase – When you block you’ll get staggered( it’s similar to the stun effect) if you have higher block and stun recovery the stun effects (stagger from block included) duration on you will be reduced

Life and Mana Regeneration per second – indicates the amounts of mana and life you’ll regenerate per second. You will regenerate even if you take damage at the same time(unlike the energy shield recharge)

Run speed increase – increases your movement speed. Note that your gear will slow you down.

Unlike many of the other aRPGs in Path of Exile you won’t get new active skills by leveling up but thru the Skill Gems! Put a skill gem into the socket of an item and you can use it! You can obtain gems from monster drops, as quest rewards or by buying them from another player. First of all – all gems are divided into 3 categories – blue, red and green gems. The colors correspond to the primary attribute that they require in order to be used. Furthermore the color of the gem needs to be the same as the color of the socket of the item in order to put it in. The gems level up when you gain experience(they don’t “steal” from your experience). When a gem is ready to level up it will need your confirmation for that(sometimes you don’t want to level up a gem because the mana cost will be higher and the required attributes will be higher aswell). The max level is 20(except for the Empower support gem). The gems can have quality. The Quality is increased by using a Gemcutter’s Prism(usually referred as a GCP). The GCP will increase the quality by 1% . The max quality is 20%. The quality of a gem will increase its properties. Quality gems can drop from monsers but can never be obtained from quests. The gems are also divided into another 3 categories – active skill gems; support gems and trigger gems.

Active skill gems will give you active abilities. Auras, spells, melee attacks, ranged attacks, curses, buffs. You’ll spend mana anytime when you use them. There are some exceptions. You can use active skills by using your life instead of mana. To do so you’ll need to take the Blood Magic passive skill(from the Passive skill tree); have an item that has blood magic(malachi; covenant) or use the blood magic support gem linked to the skill. There is another exception – The soul Taker unique axe. With it you can use melee attacks “for free”
Auras are a special case of active skills. They will grant you and everyone around you certain bonuses but will reserve a portion of your mana(or life if you use blood magic). The reserved mana can’t be used while the aura is active.

Support gems
These gems provide certain bonuses to an active skill if you put them in a socket linked to the socket where the active skill is.(example) This way you can effectively change the purpose and properties of the skill(i.e. you can make a single target skill to become an area of effect skill). The drawback is that usually having a support gem linked to an active skill will increase the mana cost of the active skill. Not every support gem will affect every active skill! To see if it will check what “kind” is the skill. Is it a projectile? A melee attack? (i.e. you can’t link a melee support gem to a range attack and expect that it will do something)

Trigger gems
These gems will cast the active skills linked to them when a certain requirement is met( like taking a certain amount of damage or killing a monster with a melee attack)

There is one special gem – Portal. It is white in color (that means that it can be put in any socket) it doesn’t level up and it opens a town portal(just like a portal scroll)

Example for a linked item; active skill + support gems + quality gems

Path of Exile has a very big and complexed skill tree. It consists of many passive skills. Most of them will increase one of your base attributes(strength, dexterity, intelligence) Some will increase % of your life; mana; resistances; damage or a certain defense. There are also some Keystones. These passives will have a big impact on your character( i.e. Blood magic will remove all your mana and you’ll be spending life instead of mana to cast your skills ).You’ll get 1 passive skill point when you level up and certain quests will also grant you extra skill points to spend. Every Class can take any node but the thing is that they start in different areas of the skill tree. My advice would be to thing very good before spending a skill point. I know that 1 wasted skill point doesn’t seem like a big problem(especialy when you have 120 at level 100) but waste too much and you’ll be in big trouble! You can respect some of your passive skill points(you’ll get respect points from quests – 18 total; and by using orbs of regret) but you can’t make a full tree reset. So think before spend! Important advice from me – don’t neglect your defenses (life, armour etc.)!

The types of items are – helmets, weapons, shields, body armors, gloves, boots, belts, amulets, rings, gems(already explained), flasks, maps and currency items
The types of items divided by their rarity are – normal(white), magic(blue), rare(yellow), unique(orange), currency(gold)

All items can be obtained from monster drops and most of them from vendors and some of them as quest rewards. The amount of dropped items from monsters can be increased if you have Increased item Quantity(can be from an item or from the support gem with the same name). The rarity of the dropped items from monsters can be increased with Increased Rarity of items found(can be from an item or from the support gem with the same name).
The defensive items(helmets, shields, body armors, gloves, boots) are divided by the attributes that they require and by the type of defense that they give. The type of defense corresponds to the required attribute – strength – armour; dexterity – evasion; intelligence – energy shield; strength/ dexterity – armour/evasion; strength/intelligence – armour/energy shield; dexterity/intelligence – evasion/energy shield
These items can have quality. It increases their defenses and it’s increased with armour scraps
The weapons are also divided by the attributes they require but also by the hands that they require in order to be use. There are also ranged and melee weapons. These items can have quality. It increases their damage and it’s increased with whetstones.

The helmets, weapons, shields, body armors, gloves and boots can have sockets in the where you can put your gems. These items will always have at least 1 socket. The maximum number of sockets is as follows:
Helmets - 4 sockets
Weapons – 3 sockets for one handed weapons and 6 sockets for two handed weapon
Shields – 3 sockets
Body armors – 6 sockets
Gloves – 4 sockets
Boots – 4 sockets

In Path of Exile there is no monetary system(gold, silver etc). But there is currency items. They can be used for trade and in the same time they are used for crafting gear. This in my opinion helps a lot with the inflation problem that most aRPGs have simply because the currency items are used a lot for crafting so there’s always a demand. The currency items by rarity and value are:

- The most rare currency item. If you have one- you are rich! It's used to make a copy of an existing item(it can't make a copy of a unique item) There are plenty of the so called "Mirror Service" threads around were you can mirror an insane item for a fee.
- It's used to save an item as it is. You can then try to get better stats on it and you can always bring it back to it's original state by using this item
- It give an extra property to an item. The max number of properties that item can have is 6 (3 suffixes and 3 affixes)
- This rerolls the values f the already existing suffixes and affixes of an item (i.e. you have an armour that gives 66 life you can use a divine orb to try to get a better life value but beware you can get lower amount)
- This item increases the quality of a gem by 1% (the maximum is 20)
- This orb upgrades a magic item to a rare one and it gives it an extra property
- It gives you one respec point (used to respec a passive skill point) when consumed
- Rerolls a rare item. Basicly it removes all of it's suffixes and affixes and gives it new ones(some or all of the previous existed mods can be present after using the orb on the item.. it's totally random)
- It makes a magic/rare item white
- Increases the quality of a map by 1% (the maximum is 20)
- Upgrades a white item into a Rare one
- Rerolls the links of an item
- Rerolls the implicit properties of an item (i.e. the fire resist of a ruby ring)
- Rerolls the number of sockets of an item
- Rerolls the colours of the sockets of an item
- Randomly upgrades a normal(white) item. You can get magic, rare or unique item.
- Rerolls the properties of a magic(blue) item just like the Chaos Orb does with the rare items
- Upgrades a normal(white) item into magic(blue) item
- Increases the quality of a weapon by 5% if it's norml(white) by 2% if it's magic(blue) and by 1% if it's unique (the maximum is 20)
- Increases the quality of a defensive item by 5% if it's norml(white) by 2% if it's magic(blue) and by 1% if it's unique (the maximum is 20)
- Gives a new random property to a magic item ( magic items can have only 2 properties )
- Increases the quality of a Flask by 5% if it's norml(white) by 2% if it's magic(blue) and by 1% if it's unique (the maximum is 20)
- Creates a Town Portal
- Identifies an Unidentified Item
And some currency tips made by Peterlerock
Spoiler

I can’t tell you the exact ratio between the currency items because the market is never stable and the ratios change frequently.

Flasks
You can have 5 flasks in your belt. They can be life or mana regenerating flasks or utility flasks. The flasks will refill automaticly when you kill enough enemies. There are normal, magic and some unique flasks but there are no rare flasks. Flasks can have quality. It is increased with glassblower’s bauble

Maps
The maps are special items. You’ll find them in the latest stages of merciless(the last difficulty) and you’ll be able to use them in a special zone called – The Eternal Laboratory(also in act3 Merciless)
When you use a map it will open a portal to a specific area filled with monsters and with a special boss. The highest level zones are reached only via maps. There are normal, magic, rare and unique maps. They can also have quality increased with the cartographer’s chisel. The quality increases the item quantity and rarity of the items that will drop there. The map properties(in magic, rare, unique maps) will increased the quantity of items found inside the map but will also buff the monsters inside or debuff you in a way.

Vendor Recipes
When you sell certain items to the vendors in town you’ll get some things in return. These are the so called “Vendor Recipes” . You can find them all very easy if you do a quick search in the internet so I’ll just give you some examples:
If you sell a level 20 gem and a Gemcutter’s Prism at the same time you’ll receive a level 1 of the same gem but with 20% quality.
If you sell any number of gems at the same time with total quality on them of 40% you’ll receive 1 Gemcutter’s Prism

Trading
Path of Exile has no auction house or auction system. If you want to buy or sell something you’ll need to post it in the trade chat or in the trade sections of the Path of Exile Forum.
There are also some extremely helpful search engine websites which will help you find items in the PoE forum!

Crafting
There are great crafting guides around so I’ll just explain some basics. In order to craft you need to use currency items on other items (right click on the currency and left click on the item) The results ofcourse are random. So in many cases it’s better to just spend the currency to buy an already existing item then to spend them trying to craft one.

Party
You can play in a party with up to 5 more players. Bigger party means tougher enemies and more loot! There are different options concerning loot distribution. You can invite a player to your party by right-clicking on his name in the chat -> invite to party. You can also create a public party for anyone who wants to join.

Guild
You can create or join into an already existing guild. It’s free to create one. The guild has a guild stash(guild stash tabs can be bought from the Microtransactions)

Player vs. player
You can fight versus another player/players if you enlist for a duel.
If you die in Hardcore in a pvp your character WON’T be transferred in standard

You can level up only by killing monsters. The monsters (just like items) can be normal(with white names), magic(with blue names), rare(with yellow names) and unique/bosses(with orange name). The harder the monster – the better the rewards. The level cap is 100. It’s important to note that you get less experience if you kill enemies which are lower level then you! You can boost your experience gain by certain unique items.

Good places for “farming” are The Ledge(act1); Felshrine Ruins(act2); Sarn City(act3); The Docs(act3); The Library(act3) and the Maps

Path of Exile follows a strict play to win policy! So pretty much all of the things that you can buy with real money is visual upgrades for your character. Cool helmet ornaments; steps that you leave when you run around; pets that will follow you etc. etc. There are also some account upgrades like extra stash tabs, the ability to put names on your stash tabs etc. So don’t look for experience boosts because you won’t find them! I must also mention that any real money trading is absolutely forbidden! Don’t even think about it or you’ll get banned!

I’ll put links to some builds later. But for now I can suggest you this: focus on one thing! Don’t try to be a spell-casting melee-hitting range-killing zombie-summoning character. Focus on one thing and stick with it! Don’t worry if you can’t make a great character from your first attempt! Try different things see what you like do some research and generally – have fun!

Decide what kind of a character you want to play - casting powerful spells, killing every enemy with a bow before they can even reach you, summoning an army of undead servants, being in the heart of the battle swinging your giant axe. After you’ve made up your mind pick a good class for that purpose and stick to your build idea.

Don’t try to be the jack of all trades. You can’t rely on lightning fire and cold spells all at the same time. Choose one and make it powerful!

Don’t neglect your defenses. Usually the defense is more important than the offense.
Plan your skill tree before you actualy spend point in it.

When you want to buy/sell an item always check the forums to see how much it’s really worth. There are plenty of Path of Exile Players who prey upon inexperienced players. Buy cheap from them and sell for a lot more.

Don’t waste your currency on crafting until you really know what you are doing.

Try to kill everything in the area. Don’t run ahead . Try to be in areas that are around your level.

If you don’t know something or you are not sure about your knowledge on it just ask someone more experienced than you.

Don’t try to buy/sell things for real money.

Support GGG and Path of Exile. It’s worth it!

Have fun!

Awesome.
Nice work. The description of Orb of Alteration,

"
- Rerolls the properties of a magic(blue) item just like the Alchemy Orb does with the rare items

should say Chaos Orb instead of Alchemy Orb.
Absolutely correct! Fixed. And thank you :)

Very Helpful! Thank you!
Keep it up! :)
spell-casting melee-hitting range-killing zombie-summoning character

^ This was pretty much the build I was doing as my first char :D

But this was nice and easy to read, even for me who has now played for 1 year, there was some new things I didn't know. I hope this helps new players
