This game ruined Diablo 3 for me...

There are a few people here who are claiming there are so many character builds in Diablo 3.

I played the beta and have a high level Barbarian. I will ask one question: why should I create another Barbarian?

This pretty much sums it up.

TLDR:

If this is the game for you, fine this is the game for you. But saying D3 isn't the game for you because "Why should I ever make another Barbarian." I counter with "Why should I ever be forced to make another Marauder?"

Start Post:

Reinhart, your last comment got me thinking for a little bit. I am waiting for the actual release to continue anything with this game anyway as I am bored as hell of it lately mostly from the seemingly slow paced combat, that appears to get ruthlessly punishing not because of changed attack patterns but because all of a sudden the attacks hit you for way more then they seemingly should be.

Also the unforgiving nature of "Messing" up your builds, and no I am not here to have that argument here because if you think D3 forums are bad with raving lunatic fans about how a game is superior you have not seen the people defending this "superiority" of a system.

Also the defensive system is rather punishing to figure out in a way that benefits your character properly enough.

But the, why make a second barbarian comment got me thinking. Why should I make a second barbarian? For that matter why should I make a second Marauder to Play a different build? Maybe I should stick with one build in this game to avoid replaying the parts I find boring?

Why should I be remaking any character for anything other then one reason, to have fun.

So what is the difference between these two systems. In one system (D3) You ask why bother, thus no reason to create a new character. In this another (PoE) I ask, why should I? I shall stick with the one. Since neither is really an invalid opinion. You ask why bother, I ask why should I? We then look at what happens with each system.

For me, the why should I player in this game. I am punished for my choice if I did it wrong, or perhaps poorly enough to effect me far too negatively in combat to quickly progress enough to not be causing me to grind lower level areas to the point of boredom to either end up out leveling the content so I can progress further before I reach the next blocking point for my build, or reroll my character to do it better this time around. I am in essence forced to do the old content I had done once more to fix what I have apparently broken.

I have to be bothered to create a new character.

In D3, you are right, you never have to be bothered to create a new character, except under one circumstance, you enjoy leveling through the lower level content as a lower level for a sense of challenge.

In this game however, I am forced to create a new character. I may never necessarily be able to create my own character without having to recreate a character. Because I have the potential of being stuck in a build that can no longer progress without high levels of death and end up grinding as low content as I can get away with, with as high experience as I can get.

So if this is the game for you, I argue you obviously like replaying low level content with a low level character over and over again. You would have to for this to be ok for you in PoE. So I would say the reason you reroll a character in PoE is because you enjoy the low level content as a low level character.

Which is something you can also do in D3 as you already well know. But clearly this is not your reason as you would then like both games, because they both offer you the same opportunity.

So it's not out of enjoyment of the content at low levels.

So obviously, it's about builds for you. So what you are saying, is you like it to take 10-20 if not more hours to try a new build to see how successful it is. Not because you actually enjoy re leveling the content of the game at lower levels. Because if this game had D3's "Respec" Concept you would be asking the same question. Why make a new Marauder?

I would be willing to bet the answers have less to do with the actual fun factor of playing the game, and more of the factor of feeling like you have the best build around, and it's going to take someone else 20 hours or more to catch up to your awesome build.

This may not be the case, but you know what? I'll bet you had a Hammerdin, a Whirlwind Barbarian, and a Bowazon just like me. And yes, they were some of the best builds around.

I put thousands of hours into PSO item hunting as a Hunter made it all the way to level 147. I played because I was having fun. Did I ever make another hunter? Yes. Did I ever have to make another hunter? No. The game was enough fun on it's own to be replayable for thousands of hours for me not to have a requirement of leveling another character to keep it fun. It was like this for thousands upon thousands of players.

If remaking a character to try a new build is your idea of replayability, and fun, take a cue from PSO. It didn't need those things to be replayable and it came out the exact same time as Diablo 2. Like Diablo 2, the original PSO still has players playing to this day.

Games should be made to be fun to keep playing, not be made to be required to be replayed from the start. I am not saying that this game is making itself required to be replayed as opposed to be fun to keep playing, but it is requiring people to replay to fix something, which can cause an entire stop in playing, as it has for me for the time being, and it is not even that I chose bad, I chose the never miss skill path with the avatar of fire skill path, and figured I'd be going to town. Oh how wrong I was. It was being raved about as some great massive build to when I went to look up if I was just doing something wrong. Hell maybe I do just suck. I just don't see how half the enemies in the game having resistance to fire makes having all your attacks do fire damage a good thing, and by then I had 20 points that needed fixing because I didn't need that node.

Big post and a short reply...

I read through the posts and didn't see anything that seemed obsessive. He seemed more to be admitting to acting like a child. People will be people, and some can be hard to get along with or have a conversation with, not going to be the "nice guy" police. No offense intended, if you feel that I have missed something please send me a PM. Or, if you would rather have another Moderator give it a look please send a PM to Tpapp/Zeto/Whiteboy.

Also, "Trolling" can take many forms, I may have misspoke when using that term earlier. What I had meant, was posts involving nothing more than name calling (beyond the "noob" or "idiot" comments that proliferate all forum message boards), or racist/sexist comments. Or an attempt to purposefully derail a thread, or spamming a thread.

Again, if you feel at any time that someone is being way out of line, please let a moderator know.

Happy hunting/fishing
il tell you why you would reroll a char:
because you find it fun. If its not fun, you will not do it (or something is just wrong with you :) )

And the definition of fun is different for different people.

Stop insisting that your definition of fun is an absolute, it's just isn't...

If it was, the whole world would have only entertainment that you like and nothing else...

Am not judging your taste, am just saying i am happy that there are different tastes in fun, making the whole world a colorful place with options.
Kristen for president! :)
The real difference between these two games is that one is very clearly designed for the casual market, whilst the other is designed for fans of the old one. I'm choosing to support Path of Exile because the company seems much more respectable, whereas I hate what Blizzard's done to their games over the years. They don't need my money, because every single person subbed to World of Warcraft is going to buy Diablo 3 as well, just as they bought StarCraft 2 with no previous RTS knowledge.

Enough of this trolling between the two. If you have your reasons for choosing to buy Diablo 3 (Whatever disgusting reasons those are) then go ahead, it's your money and your time. For everyone else that want's character building and the regular features of an Action RPG, we'll stay here. As far as all of this trolling goes, both in game and on the forums. I'm really tired of it, it's for kids. No one is going to take anyone's opinion seriously in a giant flame war and it really does ruin the community. Take about the game you are PLAYING.

As you can see above he did indeed admit to outright trolling, but Id never report him, honestly if he wants to make a fool of himself and totally devalue any argument he made thats his lookout, I was merely pointing out that usually such an admission would be an instant infraction on most boards...

But for the record Im glad thats not the case here, however I do think when this game gathers more steam and gets closer to release some much heavier handed moderating will be required or the forums will be overrun with trolling/flaming, being a F2P game attracts some of the worst forum users possible.
