GGG Marketing Guy would love your ideas!

dont know the costs, but i think google ads would be better, as people do look sometimes on ads when searching for stuff

but on facebook, even if you pay to get promotion, you seem to end up with a high (high!) % of likes and such from countries with like farms... even when you pay from within facebook, it's insane!!

I really like this approach, too.

I read in an article way back that Facebook advertisement can get really affordable once you can specify the target audience of the advertisement precisely. Advertisements may only be displayed for people fulfilling certain prerequisites. Wouldn't it be possible to advertise around people on Facebook liking D2, D&D, MtG and other classics alike?

Edit:
Speaking of, wouldn't it be possible to extract statistics about players location and advertise on Facebook "locally", meaning that only areas are targeted where a lesser amount of PoE Players is present? I am certain that this would reduce advertisement costs, too.

No dude, its still way too expensive. Facebook made sure of that. [...]

Really? Guess my information is outdated or not precise. I was holding this for true coin because I always see ridiculous ads of local business around my corner in Germany on Facebook. Could have never imagined that they got the bucks to have a heavy marketing budget. :D

Yeah. Well, I mean I don't really know what sort of budget does GGG have right now, but since they are a rather small company giving out a (great) free game I wouldn't think they have a huge budget for it.

For Google Ads, it depends on the market and the bidding strategies of competitors. If it's a rather unutilized market and the competitors aren't doing much with specific keywords then it can be less expensive. But without some research into this I can't tell. Still for larger companies generally Google Adwords (PPC) is the largest spending platform among all the channels. But there could be way to make it affordable, but that's harder on a global scale.

Still I would go more into Search Engine Optimisation. It's less expensive (but more work), and if you focus on good keywords you can (easily) be on the first page in Google.
The best way to advertize a game is by making it so good that people will tell their friends about it.

PoE doesn't need advertizing. PoE needs a better way to deal with desync and some other problems.

I have a feeling that buzz marketing is the most effective factor in PoE.

But there are a lot of German websites which post news frequently about PoE, and the official test results are all very good. But as you can see the German corner thread is real huge, because PoE has already a real big fanbase here. :-)

I´m not sure if some advertising in magazines, on gaming websites or on gaming events (like the E3) would help to make PoE noticeable more popular "worldwide".

I found out about PoE from here: http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20130121/#n2400, maybe you could get more comic artists / bloggers interested in the game somehow.
I check rockpapershotgun.com for my gaming news.

Another comment about desync, how original.

In all seriousness, the best marketing is always the quality of the product itself. As far as I'm concerned, a marketer's job is to entice people to try the product; getting them to stay is the job of others in the company. Note that word-of-mouth is based on quality of product, not quality of advertisement.

Still, I'm inclined to agree criticizing desync isn't going to be very helpful regarding what the GGG marketing guy can do to perform his job better. Also, saying "PoE doesn't need advertising" is almost definitely both false and implies the OP's job shouldn't exist. So, yes, bad form on DnAngel's part.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.
