DIABLO III ?... HA! More like "DIABLO FAIL"
Diablo 3 got one thing right: changable skills aren't that terrible, as is automatic stat distribution - they make the game more accessible for newcomers. But they indeed went overboard. Here's what I would do in their place:
Make changing skills/runes cost gold/EXP similar to how Borderlands 2 does it. Alternatively, make commitments permanent unless you pay 5 levels to reset them (how the NDS game Etrian odyssey does it). Or how D2 went with once-a-playthrough respec (but probably a little more often). Also, have some, but stat points go towards main stats accordingly (such as when a barbarian gains 15 stat points, 6 goes to STR, 3 goes to VIT, and you can distribute the remaining 6 how you feel like, creating a glass cannon, a tank or a mixed build as you wish) |

" Indeed. " High monster power is most about gear anyways. " Yes. It's fun, fast paced action when I play my monk. |

To each his own. I couldn't possible stay interested in it. The combat is fine but I don't find the other elements at all interesting for an ARPG so I had to leave. I guess if others can somehow enjoy it then more power to them.

" That's not fact, that's your opinion. I still regard D1 as the creepiest of the three games, with the best atmosphere. And don't you dare tell me I should "check out screenshots or, even better, play the game". Because that is what I indeed have done; I still am playing Diablo 1 on occasion. In fact, I've just started a new rogue and am on my way through the catacombs. Yes, it is still as good an atmosphere as I remember. Even though I know the game inside and out. It's tense, dark and creepy. This may have to do with the fact it's not a hack'n'slash as popularized by Diablo 2: It's much slower, much more tactical. You have doors and grates that play a significant tactical role (one of the things that increase difficulty through the levels is that those elements fall away one after the other). You have a real line of sight, which means you really can't see if there are monsters behind a door or a corner until you open it or round it. Then there's the lack of AoE skills (unless you play Sorcerer). Which means you need to be much more careful when you explore a dungeon, since a handful of monsters can easily spell your doom (also a factor: Hit Recovery). Who can't remember the running away, only to be snatched back to the previous tile by a hard blow? And then there's the monster AI, which factors much more strongly than any other H'n'S I know. Hidden unstealthing/restealthing, Goat Men archers and Succubi running away from melee, Horned Demons circling you before rushing... where do you have this in the newer games? Nope, it's all: Monster masses homing in on you, almost never trying to preserve their hide or even evade your attacks. I don't have a problem if you don't like Diablo 1, and find other games/instalments superior/more scary. Those are our tastes, and they differ. But never tell me that "Diablo 1 was not dark and evil", and that "that's a fact". 12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human. ExileDude is pulling a JayWilson. We just don't remember D1 like it really was. It was really boring and stupid. Our nostalgia is whats making us remember it as dark, evil, and fun. We don't really know what fun is.

D1 was definitely more creepy than cartoonf$@£ D3. Super Mario scares me more than D3. Bowser is more scary than the D3 Diablo.

" Yes. I just laugh when anyone says 'that's not opinion, that's a fact' about something that is ultimately subjective. Not all art IS subjective (I'm a wanker but not that big of a wanker) but there will always be people like Avireyn and myself who agree that Diablo 1 could scare the shit out of you. I get the shivers just listening to Matt Uelmen's D1 music when I'm driving. Good shivers, but still shivers. I particularly like your point regarding the AoE issue, Avireyn. As a player with residual D1 attitude, I don't always think of AoE as necessary to my builds. In fact, rarely do I put it as a priority. Sure, that can make the game much harder, but I'm used to it from way back when. D1 taught us more about tactical, clever ARPG play than anything since. And it did it with fear, not love. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

I've got D1 sound track on my ipod, The CD is in a box somewhere, a copy on all 3 of my computers and will always have a copy of it stuck in my head.
Come@me I actually played it once at a halloween party, and was complemented on it. No seriously. The love, effort, creativity and effort invested into the game and atmosphere is UNDENIABLY scary and creepy, by any standard held now or previous, in the video game industry.
