its about pattern recognition
this has nothing to do with "gamer skill" or quick reflexes
you tried to overcome the challenge in the way youre used to (grind and build)
those are important no doubt, but now do "the new thing" the game asks of you

observe the moves of the boss AND your own reaction to it
analyse that and adjust accordingly
stop being reactive and start anticipating

the biggest obstacles in that regard are your frustration (understandable, you put in a lot of effort and it didnt pay off) and your bias (thinking its about reaction speed when its really not)

You do realize that "pattern recognition" is effectively the same as processing speed which colloquially is the same as "quick reactions" ... right?

Depending on the task people can have easily TRIPLE the pattern recognition / processing speed of someone else [Talking about averages in demographics]. Having an extra 1/3 of a second may not sound like much but that's a huge difference to those that either just barely succeed or just barely fail often enough to be frustrating.

no its not the really the same
if i recognize a pattern, i can learn it and then i can anticipate whats going to happen BEFORE it happens and prepare
sure, in the end you still gonna have to react, but you essentially frontload the whole processing part, which allows you to take precautions and thus reduce the required speed for an action to succeed significantly

WASD also uses a mouse, it just lets you move with the keyboard instead of clicking. I'm guessing a lot of people are choosing click to move out of familiarity and struggling because of it.

Yes, i do in fact use the mouse to move and attack, because i have a hard time focussing on WASD and pressing the skill buttons at the same time

I'm pretty sure this is your problem right here. Honestly I'm impressed you made it this far using click to move. Being able to aim an ability in a direction that's different from where you're moving is such a massive advantage. I can strafe out of the way of attacks using WASD while keeping my cursor aimed at the target. It also makes it easier to be constantly moving so you're less likely to get hit by AoE. I also found it really hard to hit all the keys so I moved my flasks to back and forward on my mouse and that helped a lot.

I tried. 3 different characters. about 60 to 70 times now.
i cant. i am not even getting close. In his 2nd phase he oneshots me, and in all my attempts i havent even gotten close to getting him under 80 percent.
i spent the last day just trying to kill him, again and again and again.

Cant do it. as soon as he does his red circle, i am dead. dodge doest go far enough to get out of it.

So, thats sad. i spend 60 euros on a support package, and i am hardlocked into watching the first act until the end, and then thats it.

I know, i know, skill issue, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Wanna bet i am not the only one with that issue? Think the others will spend another dime in a game they cant progress in? Me neither.

i killed him easy with warrior under lvl 20 so..... easy answer: SKILL ISSUE

PS: I dont play wsad ;)

I went in vs Geonor at level and the fight was so fast I didn't even see his main mechanic.

I wonder if some people are even trying to gear to beat the current act? Like most others I barely saw good drops, but just by using gold/currency/gems/runes I was able to put something half-functional together. Currency is meant to be spent...

(Disclaimer for sarcasm impaired people) .. No I'm sure people went into fights naked because it was fun ... IDing rares, buying good blues from vendors and regal / exalting ... what a waste of time. Runes -- hogwash.

Just because you had a cakewalk of a time doesn't mean that others didn't spend almost literally every bit of currency [esp. good ones like Regal & Exalts] just to get into something that wasn't total trash. Granted I only had to try 5 times and not 30 but if I was just a whisker slower I'd be in the -- never will realistically beat the boss territory.

I agree ... it was a skill issue. You likely recognized patterns and anticipated attacks. Those people which recognize patterns a little slower than you can might have vastly different results as the threshold is pretty much all or nothing.
okay - tried three differet builds and party play. Act 1 boss.......way too hard. Also, would LOVE to see GGG or ANYONE ELSE IN A PARTY try to a res a party member in time. Seriously, please don't punish party play. some of us love to play the game but may have...like one arm...so a key bound mouse only goes so far. I got through POE 1 multiple times and been playing since the game came out...but the Act 1 boss? Fristrating.
Yesterday I made it into Phase 2 on my Mercenary with ease. My single Target DPS is good, my movement with WASD good enough not using a single potion in phase1! I learned his attacks.

Phase 2 is causing me huge problems... I dont get hit with his attacks, I know he is charging in 1 second afer ending his speech all the time but since I can't oneshot the adds, the overwhelm me, surround me (so dodge is not working in any direction) or push me into the fog.

I have no solution for it so far. Will try it again tonight.

All my gear has runes or enchants or extra stats (rings and amu), my crossbow has nice DPS on it (16-32) plus a rune.

All in all compared to POE1 much slower gameplay (character movement feels like way to slow!) and bosses a lil overtuned so far but that's ok for an early access.

I spent most of my currency to get a weapon with two low damage roll lines, not exactly RNG blessed...

I'm not trying to invalidate other people's experiences but I do know players who went into Geonor without doing sidequests for charm/extra passive points, or trying to upgrade most of the gear so for some cases, I don't know what else they'd expect other than an exceedingly difficult fight.

I killed him playing a Ranger with a poison build at level 16 or 17, it took 4-5 tries. You need Sapphire Charm. I have a little experience with Korean RPGs, I think it helps me - not always the boss needs to be hit, sometimes you just need to run around, watch your step and dodge attacks until the boss mechanic ends. If he always kills you with one hit, find health increasing items and try to keep your health at 100% all the time. For me, the main difficulty with bosses is not the mechanics, but the fact that I don't have enough damage. The longer a fight goes on, the easier it is to make a mistake.

It's all about how quickly you process information and react.

I have similar thoughts about why I am so bad at PVP games. I think there is some genetic predisposition, but it also depends on good rest, lack of stress and enough nutrients in your body, there are days when I surprise myself.

In my opinion, the first act on normal difficulty should be more beginner friendly. It feels like I'm in Diablo 2 on Nightmare/Hardcore from the start.
Buy or find 10% movement speed boots from a vendor, I didn't need dodge roll in any boss fight Act 1.
