Just because people are buying in doesn't mean it makes sense for the free-to-play model. Free-to-play games thrive on optional purchases, not charging for access upfront.
Telling people to "just wait" ignores the fact that early access here is the game for most players. By the time the free version comes out it's relevance will have passed, and this effectively replaces the free-to-play experience with a paid one.
This isn’t a difficult concept to grasp, even for the most dedicated GGG enthusiasts. If you're paying $30 to play the game now, the "free-to-play" promise starts to feel meaningless.
Oh it makes perfect sense, you just have to stop being so entitled. Doesnt matter how you try to twist it, games will be out next year now you buy the right to test it. Thats what EA always meant. You cry because others will play the game before you, thats where the problem is. PoE is live service game, it will always be relevant. Its also non competetive in any way so all we gain is enjoyment from playing it early. You are just wrong, i know its hard to live with it but you will have to.

Paid early access doesn’t make sense for free-to-play games, regardless of their current state.
Yes, it does. So much so a lot of people are buying in.
If it doesn't make sense to you, fine, just wait until the game goes open beta or for the 1.0 and play it for free.
Hope it helps.

You whining here won't change 2 facts: 1- you're wrong; 2- Even if you were right, they won't change their minds about it. You are obviously new here, so let me repeat what other people already told you: They used the same paid closed beta model with POE.
Your claim that the game will be more relevant now in an unfinished state than will be in 1.0 is beyond ridiculous.
Again, come back in 6-12 months. You're welcome.

Wait WHAT??? "Its relevance will have passed"
Dude the game is like 50% done (content release wise) and I have played POE1 for ELEVEN YEARS.
If you think the game is only gonna be relevant for 6-12mo POE2 IS NOT THE GAME FOR YOU.

I wasn’t talking to you, so you quoted me out of context. But who knows? It's not impossible that the game could lose relevance in 12 months. The point however was that the majority of the playerbase will just buy the game on December 6. The numbers will tell.
"
Most players will have already bought the game on December 6, experiencing it well before the free-to-play version ever launches, which effectively renders the "free" version obsolete. This creates a not-so-clever marketing tactic that essentially replaces the free version with a paid version, making the original free-to-play promise feel irrelevant and dishonest.

You have no way of knowing how many players the game will get upon release. Your feelings dont make any statements you made a fact. Its the opposite. Because of them you dont see how silly your argument is.

Personally I think by charging an entry fee:
1) it'll attract players that actually want to playtest their game before full release
2) in addition, this will probably alleviate strain on servers on Early Access Launch (thinning out people band wagoning on the latest, hottest thing before they move on)
3) increase development budget
Just my two cents

lol reminder for those who are going in to this PAID EA.
once the game is out all your characters/gear/stash will be marked into something akin to Last epoch's "offline only" mode where you can continue playing with them but cannot interact with the rest of the playerbase.
the game is free if you just wait for the full release.
buying into this EA you're paying to be a beta tester
