King of Bullshit: 10% death penalty
ARPG is a genre ALL(!) about progression, at least how I see it. It's all about progressing your character through the different stages of the game. Progress your gear. Progress your wealth, if that's your thing. You progress until you're bored, hit your plateau or finish the game and all the bosses.
If this progression is a straight line, with no hurdles, turns, setbacks or punches to the face, the game becomes boring really quickly. Throw in some friction, hurdles to overcome, setbacks to learn from and punches to the face to recover from, and you have yourself a diverse game that is actually rewarding and gives the player a sense of accomplishment when (s)he overcomes those hurdles. And one day, these hurdles become a non-issue. But it also has to do with your mentality. If you're hellbent on blaming everything on the game and "bad design" instead of showing some willingness to learn and adapt, you have already lost. Because thousands of player have overcome these hurdles, and lots of player are every single league. I'm not saying the death penalty is perfect, and it could probably be adjusted. I've suggested some sort of "revenge" system before, where you could retrieve some of your lost XP by killing the monster(s) that killed you. And maybe they could throw in a reduction to the XP lost if the same monster(s) killed you again. But one thing is certain, IMO: The game need some sort of death penalty to encourage the player to actually balance their builds and think about how (s)he plays the game. Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

if you want to lvl to 100 farm legion and then 5ways
i've argued with the same people on here over and over again until i realized how easy it is to reach lvl 100 it takes twice as long in diablo4 to reach max lvl "There are Penalties in the Game, no one's complaining about them"

" You're TOTALLY right. The age of this thread about a long persisting issue part of the playerbase has TOTALLY invalidates it! And also, gatekeeping / elitism TOTALLY is the most wonderful expression a player can ever make. I applaud you! And I do understand, because of you, now, that the only way to properly play the game is HC SSF R. I promise I will do my best to stop being one of those ugly regular trade challenge league peasants and aspire to becoming on of the chosen ones Khan Noonien-Singh would invite to the Botany Bay just because of being so "gud" at a computer game. *bows* Last edited by navigator4223#0403 on Jul 9, 2023, 3:52:53 AM

Cool, five extra skill points for what, dying three times per map? Count me in.

Someone with an 11 year old account complaining about dying is just funny to me.
And this is not League of Legends, there's nothing "gatekeeping" you but yourself. But to be fair, don't project your bullshit on others. Trying to vilify others when the truth is nothing you've mentioned has anything to do with the subject at hand. Helped my fair share of noobs get to 100, and OP wants the lazy way out, that is all. FYI: Ruthless is just garbage, culling loot doesn't make it harder, just longer and tedious. HC is a waste of time since DCs are recurring, and often. Trade is deliberately outdated and a pain to deal with because otherwise 90% of players would leave without it, and SSF suffers for it. Couldn't give two shits about elitism, that's TFTs area of expertise. Smiley face. Ruthless should be [Removed by Support]. Last edited by AdRonZh3Ro#4713 on Jul 9, 2023, 10:33:02 AM

Just come in here to add my git gud to this post.
Maybe they will implement 20% xp loss with all the whiners. Entitlement gaming at its finest. Theres no reason you have to be over about 92-94 for a lot of builds. if you cant hit 94 your build sucks anyways. the reason for this xp penalty is to discourage glass cannon builds from getting to 100 by annihilating content. I do think if they removed the xp loss from pinnacle bosses that wouldnt be a bad thing. I hate having a lot of xp early in league when its time to do my pinnacles but im scared to -10 on them since my gear usually sucks then. so i just sit on the key until i level. I do not know if that is a problem ggg cares about. Which idc anyways. Poe is still the best arpg on the market, and theres a reason for that. The systems it has work just fine. If they water it down with QOL changes for the peasants that just sit around and cry instead of grind then the game will start to suck. |

The real reason for the xp penalty is the level 100 chase goal. GGG loves this chase goal as do a lot of players. It really does a poor job of preventing glass cannon builds. One doesn't even really even notice the XP penalty until getting into the level 90's.
My problem with the xp penalty is that 2 friends stopped playing PoE because of it. I think it hurts player retention. Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!

" My friends weren't trying to get to level 100. They were just playing PoE and noticed their xp going down after death. Their thought was that they had earned that experience and it was bad for GGG to take it away. Players have been complaining about this xp penalty from the beginning. Originally it was a 20% penalty. GGG lowered it to 10% because of the complaints. For myself, when I first noticed the xp penalty, I asked my friend (different friend from the two that quit) if the xp penalty was applied to my gems. He said no so I shrugged and kept playing. Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!

i think many people are looking at the penalty the wrong way.
10% xp loss is big, but the problem is not the penalty, the problem is WHAT CAUSED you to die. previously pre AN, all you had to do is run normal/magic maps with safe mods. the chance of dying is reduced a great deal. all you need to do is play safe. getting to 100 is definitely a slog, but its just a test of perseverence. POST AN, its more of a gamble. for most "regular softcore folk", our operandi is clearing as much content asap to grind out xp. but encountering an AN mob with specific mod combinations can ramp up the difficulty quite high. also the way it is, damage spikes jump crazy high. you can be singing you favourite songs half an hour blowing past content, then suddenly die from a "bad encounter". xp penalty is NOT the issue. high spikes is the issue. i m not even talking about alc and go maps.
