Got scammed for the first time. Sucks :(

It's not your fault you got scammed. The community in this game is terrible.
I wouldn't quit over it, but just realize that most of the people you interact with in this game, are scumbags. Thats the cold, hard truth. Been like that for a long time. You know, its sad, too. I remember in Closed Beta we had no trading screen. All trades were done outside of town by tossing stuff on the ground. Granted, it was closed beta, but that's a microcosm of what fair transactions are supposed to be. You expect a fair trade. When you dont get one, its not YOUR fault. Its not your fault the other human being is a scumbag. Maybe you weren't diligent enough. Maybe you were too trusting. None of that compares to just being a swindler and a thief. Its like blaming someone for getting shot becuase they decided to go to the movies where they thought they would be safe. I really cant understand why people blame the victims around here. Its like a joyful glee you see in these kinds of posters. It's almost as if they get aroused reading and gloating about someone getting scammed. Then, they feel superior to said person, when they themselves have made a TON of trades where they didn't double check every single item. Any of those times they could have been scammed. OP, it sucks, but you won't get sympathy here. The kind of people who post on these forums live for that stuff. Take it from someone who has been around awhile. Holy shit, you guys just aren't getting it.
Maybe trades need to happen in the presence of a GGG staff member. Like a mediator. Each person puts up their trade. Then the GGG staff members asks each person if they agree. Then the trade can happen. And once the trade happens, each person has an allotted time, day 30m, to cancel the deal and trade back the items. You can obviously tell the demographics of the people that play this game. And the white guys says, I'll have a Coke then.

" I hate to say it but I agree. I have very few interactions with people in this game where people are helpful and nice. I mean, go to the subreddit and see a nice slice of how horrible the community is. I've been playing for 6 years and I still love the game, so I'll still be around for awhile, but the whole community seems built around the "I do whatever I want because all I care about is me" mentality. |

" Yep. I've been playing since 2011. The last time I could honestly say this community was decent, WAS Closed Beta, because by nature of such a small community, your name could be ruined. Since then, this has been one of the worst communities to me, in terms of just how awful people screw each other over, and how regularly it happens. It's really from the top down, tbh. The game started off with that kind of mindset. For the D2 crowd, the ones who liked to Telekinesis scam each other nonstop. I really wonder if we would have ever got a trade screen if D3 didn't botch theirs so horribly. I think GGG liked us trading on the ground. Just like the Bandits where you could PK other hardcore people, and they wanted to do cutt-throat leagues. It trickled from the top down until the game took off and they had to curtail some of it. |

" You don’t really understand the reason naming and shaming rules exist do you. “Hey guys, so I was scammed today. The guy was advertising Uber kills, so I joined and paid the 1ex and then waited. After several other players did the same, the guy just typed ‘ty 4 scam <3’ and left the party. I tried messaging them but it said I was ignored :/ The guy’s IGN is LowBudget780” Did you do this? No. This never happened. Good luck trying to prove that. That’s the issue. Naming and shaming are likely mostly legit. But some aren’t, some are half truths, others, outright lies. It’s akin to calling the police and outright lying that I saw you scratch my car. Or making false rape allegations. You are given free reign to slander people without a lick of proof. How long till that gets out of control? GGG doesn’t defend scammers. It will punish them if there is clear cut evidence. It just doesn’t talk about it. And when the scam is more complex, it becomes harder to prove. But you always need proof. You can’t ban on a whim just as you can’t imprison innocent people. This world would burn if that was the norm. Think about it for a second. Naming and shaming erodes the entire society. Deliver pain exquisite

" Obviously, but this scam relies on items being similar enough so that it passes a quick inspection. " That's not what "as is" means. It means you buy something that is clearly defective, a box on unknown contents or an untested item. It's meant to inform the buyer, whereas in this case, it was by using an item of similar stats and graphics meant to conceal that the item was fake. I really don't get why you keep blaming the OP for what he did not do, while not saying a thing about what the obvious scammer did do. Going outside is highly overrated

" Thank god you are not my father. I was thought morale and value. The burgular breaks into your home, Your wife is found dead on the floor Dog has been sexually abused Big smiley drawn on the wall in blood. YOUR fault, you forgot to lock your door while ALL you had to do was turn the lock. You were given the tools, a lock and a key. What do you want, some private guard monitoring you every time you close the door? WRONG. that burgular should be impaled on the city square and kept alive by life support devices for 17 years until he dies. Damn glad I have my own set of morale. You are allowed to have yours obviously in this free world. Luckily I don't have to accept yours. Vorici can shove his fuse up his [removed]

" It’s actually the UI that needs to be fleshed out to make trade a lot better. Making each pop up window different would help a great deal. A friend request, guild request, trade request, party request all look identical. You have to read what the alert is. That’s awful and easily solved. In this case, reusing 2D art has come back and bit GGG. Imagine simply just adding a search field to the trade window, which if you entered “graelwood”, only that sword would get highlighted. Not elegant but then impossible to swap items not of the same name. Naturally GGG wants you to be vigilant, but still, it could flesh out the UI to make scammer much much harder. The difference between rejecting or accepting a trade is also minute. Can’t tell you how many trades I’ve canceled and the person still says ty and leaves... with no item lol. Things like this need to be taken care of. They really need to hire a UI/UX guy. Deliver pain exquisite

Op, you fall so you can learn to get back up.
Lesson learned. Quit dwelling. Move on. Good luck. |

" No, it is in fact YOU who don't get it; everyone can be scammed, no-one can be 100% safe from it. Not you, not me, not anyone. Thieves are always one step ahead of you, and don't think for a second otherwise. Is it your fault that the cash machine you just used had a new, sophisticated skimming equipment on it, scanning your card and possibly use it to steal from you? Of-bloody-course it isn't. It's the fault of the ones who put it there! " Or maybe, just maybe people like you simply need to stop blaming victims. How about that? Going outside is highly overrated -Anorak's Almanac.
