Worst Death Penalty mechanics I've ever seen!

And that is the best summary of why these threads go nowhere. I can't think of anything I've ever played that was hard and not frustrating at one point or another.

I love very hard games (like Civilization III on Sid level). I have played many hard games without frustration. Good game should have different difficult levels. It doesn't have to be easy/medium/hard levels with scaled enemies. Great games like Diablo 2 or Gothic 2 have hidden difficult level.
Diablo 2 offline - easy; Diablo 2 LoD with taxi and trade - medium; Diablo 2 LoD SSF - hard.
Gothic 2 - easy; Gothic 2 NotR as Paladin - medium; Gothic 2 NotR as Mage - hard.
In PoE there is SSF which is much harder, but over 95% of content is still very easy. Compare this to Diablo 2, where even trash mobs can be deadly. I don't count HC as difficult, because most players (including me) don't like this kind of difficult.
Gothic 2 was way easier as a mage than the other classes dude, somebody wasn't casting summon imp

btw mad + points for even mentioning it ^^ what a classic

The reason why these threads don't go anywhere is the bunch of Kripparrian wannabes trying to elevate their own importance. I mean... this is cringy;

The issues I have with the death penalty is that it can be mitigated somewhat by only doing hard stuff immediately after dinging because you can't delevel. The rest of the time you have a high incentive to grind the easier stuff.

Why is this bad? I suppose if you are disciplined and only follow this method then the death penalty is no big deal assuming a stable connection. But is it fun? Is it fun to spend a day or two grinding easy stuff or is it even possible with incursion which I have died numerous times the second I move on an incursion with the wave of ranged crap. Or with random stuff in the Temple.

I like incursion very much and I think it is fun (even with some deaths). If it was me as the decision maker at GGG I would realize that softcore should be more forgiving and that people should want to take on the tough fights without a second thought. I suppose that overall it is a good idea to have some death penalty mechanic - I would prefer a monetary amount (option) in place of the experience loss. For example, a death at level 90 would cost 5 chaos, at 91 6 chaos, etc.

This would provide people incentive to level to 90 (using the existing death penalty prior to that) and make the deaths less harsh post 90 if they are willing to pay for the resurrection. This is good for the players, this is good for GGG since people likely would play more (and buy more tabs etc) if they had a real chance of leveling post 90...which in my book only the hard core players really mess with.

Long ago when I played early D3 it did feel like a casual kids game in how you could just die over and over again for free. I definitely prefer death to be meaningful.

I've stopped trying to lvl up my lvl 92 duelist because it would take too long and I don't want to play that carefully. Oh well it's just 8 levels.

Dying in early Diablo 3 was devastating due to the enrage timer which meant that, if you died, you almost certainly set it off and then you were in real trouble. On top of that, dying cost you gold which was at one time increased to almost absurd levels. It also cost you your stored buffs and of course time. Pretty normal softcore mechanics, I'd say.

Hardcore is for players looking for deaths being more meaningful, and there is such mode in Diablo 3, and incidently, in this game too, for the exact same reason.

This was a long time ago so my memory might not be perfect. I don't recall the enrage timer. I do remember gold being worthless and not caring about it.

There is a middle ground between people who like meaningless deaths and people who like hardcore. Hardcore is extreme.

I remember how it went insane, when you needed too long for the boss kill act2 and the big toad started to enrage. In this times it was already a big thing to reach act3 and manage to get to the battlefields.
Or the enrage at the ubers, when you had nearly no more chance to not die, because the duo enraged. This was a time D3 was still hard to play and no chance without items from AH.

Happy that we have no AH in PoE
