It's not about being "SSF-viable" or not. It's about the balance between drops, trade and effort. I would've hated an instant AH just as much as I would've hated not being able to trade. Two evils. Two edges. Far left and far right, like politics, while the middle ground is the best thing for most people.
Would you, personally, play differently if there was an instant auction house (and no other changes to the current game)? If so, why? Why not just ignore it?

I'd probably be forced to, yes. I'd probably be forced to trade more due to inflation, lower prices and an overflown market. The few items I prefer to sell, would be harder to sell at a reasonable price. And the psychological aspect, knowing there was several upgrades one click away, without having to put in any effort, may have made me feel that my farming was more wasted than it is now. But that part in on me.
And if my suspicions are right, that introducing an AH will adjust several other parts of the game in a negative manner, because everything developed after an AH would have to be balanced with said AH in mind, I would've been forced to play different.
But you are welcome to think that NOTHING will change regarding balance, monsters, items and drop rates, even though you can buy easier and cheaper than now.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

If the transaction cost from trading goes close to 0 (which was the case in D3) it basically means you aren't killing stuff anymore to gain currency and loot (mainly to sell to others). You end up flipping instead.
I never understood that point. If there was an AH I could use any time I want for free (BTW: I'd prefer some cost associated with trade, just don't want it to be "hassle", as I'm playing a game here and want as little "hassle" instead of challenge as possible), I would quest and kill stuff until I hit that gear wall. Then I'd buy an item or two and repeat. Whenever I find something cool I don't need myself, I'd post it and thus get some extra currency on the sideline, *allowing me more time to slay monsters instead of trade*. And if I really feel the need for some super rare, crazy OP and expensive item, I'd grind the highest level monsters I can find to amass currency to buy it.
It's basically how I play these days, using poe.trade, except trading can be really annoying sometimes. Obviously, if you just flip and trade for a few days you can short-cut this whole affair and get your GG items immediately. But why play then? I'm sure I'm not the only one who wouldn't trade 24/7 just because it's less cumbersome...

If they put up an instant auction house, it wouldn't be long before people asked for the game to be made harder to compensate, and once again self-found play would be made even more difficult.

Rhykker talked briefly about an interview Chris gave on a D3 Podcast and Im doubting now that Chris knows his own game.
He said that trading is difficult and complicated by design and his reason was that when he played vanilla D3 he played the auction house more than the actual game and 99% of his upgrades came from there. That is a shit reason.
Guess what, Chris, its the same in PoE. You wanna make cash? You spend time with trade.
The only difference is that even people who dont have a shop still get almost all their upgrades from trading. So the reason he made trade a complete clusterfuck on PoE doesnt matter because what he was trying to prevent still happened. At this point you might as well make trade better, I doubt its gonna change what we already do. We trade for every item we need. Well except for the SSF guys but thats beside the point.
You and apparently half the people on this forum and reddit seem to underestimate how powerful a shining AH button on everyone's screen actually is.

Selling iterms for cash is violating the terms of agreement and is subject to account ban. Looks like you just surrendered your account to the hammer. Good luck.

If only that were true we wouldn't have so much abuse going on in the trading market to begin with. There has been some drama here and there and known RMTer's who just keep on trucking. I mean why do you think people abuse PoE.Trade and amass so much currency? Just for kicks? Small percentage. A lot of them do it for RMT. A lot of people cash out every league. Play, sell when bored. This is why something like Warframe.Market can exist without much problem because abusing it for cash is not lucrative or worth it. However, the same thing in PoE is abused to the max because of real money implications behind it.
GGG lets a lot of people get away with a lot of shit they shouldn't. There was some juicy drama back around the forsaken masters release that was just icing on the cake for the kind of hypocrisy this game runs on.

Jezus, you must be the shining star on any forum you enter. You really think a game is even capable of the ridiculous demands you apparently have? Every online game has issues with RMT, botters, scammers etc etc.
It's like fucking saying this city sucks because it has crime, and then randomly adding the police doesn't even do anything about while screaming random fairytales about Rmters.
If you really believe GGG is all in on this why the fuck are you even here? Go make your own game.
