Even Wyatt Chang understood why instant leech is a terrible mechanic
" 'people will cry' is a generic blanket statement. if theres a build that cant die but cant do damage to kill a boss in half an hour, its balanced enough, and twice so in current iteration of the game. if theres a build that cant do damage but can permanently CC content for other party (ie, old freeze mine), then it's a problem. if a mechanic becomes the go-to, least resistant path and by far the easiest and efficient way to trivialize one of the most important things in the game (defense) while also jacking the other important thing (offense), it's a HUGE problem. if something is utilized, used so much its probably too good (and in 99% cases it IS) in terms of cost and benefit, and undermines the things that are even more important than defense or offense: CHOICE. "We don't need insta-leech, we must learn to evade attacks".. Go on, play with something like Cyclone skill and evade boss'es attacks. Evasion without instaleech in this game are completely sux, one single lag or desync will kill you and no matter how good you are.

" Oh yea, I forgot there was a time aura gems were reserved your mana on a fixed amount, so it was easier to fit in more auras. I think when I did the BoR facebreaker build (right before it got really hyped up), I was able to run Hatred, Vitality, Purity, Grace, Determination and maybe Tempest Shield (it was an aura until 2.0) since I went with BM support gem. I think it was close to the end of open beta when GGG made "reduced mana cost" support gem work with aura and they changed the name to "reduced mana" at the same time with the mechanic change. I was able to run a bit more auras into the build for that short time. Of course in 2.0 GGG went like, reduced mana support, your time is up to reduce the mana reserved of auras. Now the new name scheme sounds really dumb. Once 1.0 hit, I can only run hatred + vitality + purity (nerfed) + grace since it was better than determination with IR, because of all the auras except clarity were % based reservation. LL aurabots were still able to run all the auras back then and even with 1.0 change, thry still ran almost all of them. I actually did not run clarity on my melee life builds since life regen was easy to come by for them compare to mana back then. There was a lot of snapshotting back then too with auras, gems and gears. lol Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game. - raics, 06.08.2016 Last edited by JohnNamikaze#6516 on Jan 31, 2017, 10:09:51 PM

Good post.
What actions are necessary if leech>massive damage? Nothing (you are immortal). What actions are necessary if massive damage>leech? Evade(run) and atk. Where is the tank? Attack, and heal, and nerf, and buff, use tactics, and everything to resist while do damage (aka fight, battle)? Dead because hk and anti hk enviroment (like some shooter games and actual POE pvp). |

"and they still do: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/5ijd4n/how_many_auras_do_you_run_all_14/ And worst change is putting almost all bosses in new version of maps into fucking small areas, where you can't kite well or dodge stuff. What a terrible idiot invented that I want say to him: dude flick you, seriously flick you very much.

Interestingly enough, we've never had this hooha about Vaal pact back when it was it located at the bottom of the tree, when leech values were higher (and so even with VP's leech is halved it wasn't an issue). This was despite reflect doing a lot of damage back then.
Currently, life regen just isn't significant enough to warrant it being a strong enough downside on VP. Just move VP back down to the bottom of the tree so most glass cannon builds will have to give up dps to get to it (because let's face it, VP is a defensive option, so you should have to give up dps to get to it. Also this will make it tougher to stack dps without any downside at all), boost leech numbers back up, boost leech rate, give Vaal pact its "leech is halved" back and boost life regen nodes with a possible new keystone to boost it much higher at the cost of no leech. Ofc it's possible that we'll just shift meta from leech VP to regen instead of achieving any proper balance in the game, but let's face it: GGG's priority has never been about achieving proper/perfect balance. They have always just shifted meta around so ppl don't get bored. That said, Monster damage, one shots and defences should also be looked at and reworked, but that alone isn't gonna curb VP's current popularity and the no-brainer choice which it currently is for CI/ES builds. " Sorry, forgot about BM makes it easier to have that happen. Still takes a good amount of effort to make it happen, but I still applaud to that. @Invalesco: Moving VP back to the old spot will bring back Atziri's Acuity and that will be another balance nightmare. " thats pretty crappy logic. you have to actually hit something if you desync to leech. now I know we're in a time where you hit like 3/4 of the screen, but still life flasks are actually way better for desync, believe it or not. mashing the life flasks isnt conditional on hitting something. oh and people need to stop making excuses. bu-bu one-shots, bu-bu monsters hitting hard. they're SUPPOSED TO in the high level maps. its not SUPPOSED to be a gentle stroking of your partners vagina or a walk in the park. by utilizing VP you're willingly cheating yourself out of that 'dangerous' experience and then you're proud of it, smh. |
