[Reddit discusses forums] Chris has now posted

I do not really understand what is so good about this voting system?

On reddit people usually judge the usefulness of your post by the number of upvotes, but the single fact that anyone can vote on your posts and their votes are treated equally turns me inside out.

People who have never even played the game and have absolutely no idea about it can be the judge of post made by people who understand the gameplay better then developers. Its like letting some hobos to supervise the work of atomic engineers.

I really don't understand why people have a problem with Boem's signature. It's just a signature. I don't even read it half the time when I read his posts because I automatically tune it out. I don't get it. whats the big deal?

It is highly annoying to a lot of people, myself included. I just ignore it and most of his posts and thus I'm not bothered. Others choose to leave the forum and turn Boem into the reason for anything bad in the world, 10x Obama.

*shrug*
You have to be realistic about these things.

Since reddit allows personal attacks if they coincide with the popular opinion, some highly visible users were also mentioned repeatedly and people happily jumped on the bandwagon, which is typical herd mentality and common vindictiveness. Crowds are mean.

It could be herd mentality or it could be that said person (or persons) have rubbed many, many people the wrong way which is the more likely explanation.
Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you.

Oh, I'm not saying they are perfect. If they are disliked by so many people, there certainly are reasons for that. What I've been saying throughout this discussion is:

- no one is perfect, including the people who hate said person(s)
- everyone would benefit from being a little kinder, a bit less touchy and a bit more rational, not emotional
- said people are not the main reason people left the forum, the bad moderation is

This is an important thing to keep in mind. There are people behind the names being discussed here.

We're trying our best to keep this thread open, as there is a fair bit of valuable feedback in here, but it's headed in a very dangerous direction.

I'm going to need to echo Sarah's sentiment, and request that people try to keep any sort of personal attacks or mud slinging out of the thread.

If things continue to head in a direction where the thread is starting to do more harm than good, we will need to close the thread up.

This is something we'd prefer to avoid, so instead we're going to lock the thread for an hour to give some people time to cool off. The thread will be unlocked after the hour has passed.

Please take some time out to review our Code of Conduct. For ease of use, you can find the new code of conduct here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1457463

d) I want the forum to eventually have a reddit-like up/downvote system. It'll solve a lot of issues.

I suspect Chris's perception of Reddit is skewed because he receives more positive reactions there. He probably thinks 'hey, what a lovely place, people here are great'.

Yes, it's a lovely place for him and GGG staff. It could also be a terrible place for someone who's at the wrong end of the crowd's animosity. And, as I said, crowd psychology is different than individual psychology. When the crowd perceives a certain trend, it may snowball and if the trend is to hate on someone, the crowd can easily turn into a mob.

Pitchforks and rope are quick to follow.

The connection is tenuous, but - what the hell, this thread needs a little irreverence and levity:

That's right if Chris pretended to be Charan on reddit he wouldn't like that place at all.

Like I said if there is an up/downvote system it mustn't be like reddit it must be more like amazon/ebay review. No vote without explanation and that not anonymous.
Everybody should be responsible for the votings and unuseful votings in any direction need to be removeable if useless.
This is the only way to prevent snowbally fandom and hatevotes.

Just to touch on your perception of reddit, I would like to make you aware that even downvoted posts are visible in a thread, all you have to do is scroll down a little to see them & if people are like me they tend to want to read the most downvoted posts as much as the top ones, if anything it is the mulch in the middle that gets ignored. I believe Chris reads the downvoted posts just as much as the top ones and is adult enough to decide whether he agrees with an individual post regardless of its upvote/downvote ratio. Just because a post is at the bottom doesn't mean it is disregarded. I think you are overstating the power of voting, it is just a thread sorting method, not a way to silence people.

Plus I just want to point out that your own advice is the mental version of up/downvoting. You are asking people to ignore certain posters and that is essentially the function of the voting system.
