[Reddit discusses forums] Chris has now posted
I am not *asking* them to ignore users. I am recommending them to ignore things which annoy them as a healthier and more practical approach to leaving the forum entirely or lashing out.
About the power of voting, it's one thing to observe how someone's posts are being consistently downvoted and the person is subjected to targeted hate and it's an entirely different experience to actually be the target of that. It has a strong emotional impact and it is very difficult to process or assess objectively. I've been in a somewhat similar situation in high school. I've always been arrogant and abrasive and I managed to antagonize a large part of my classmates, so they pretty much avoided me in 11th and 12th grade. Mind you, I haven't been bullied or even openly hated. On the contrary, they reacted to my bullying and aggressive behaviour from previous years. They just politely avoided me. Nothing overt, nothing too extreme. I knew very well what was the reason for that. I knew very well I deserved it. I didn't care that much about their opinion because I was still pretty full of myself. I didn't even like these people and I knew I would never have to contact them again after we graduated. Having all this in mind, it is amazing how unpleasant it was. It taught me an important lesson, one I've been trying to preach in this thread: Be kinder. That's all. You'll be shocked how much better your life will become if you try to follow this principle. Hell, I continue to fail daily as I'm aggressive and even cruel by nature, but at least I try. Sometimes, I succeed and it's amazing. You have to be realistic about these things.

" and that is the result of the reputation each person has developed. Is that not how life works? If you are frequently being arrested by police, what reputation have you built? Are people going to be happy to see you? Chris has developed a reputation as a friendly, kind and helpful person at Reddit. This is true not only in the Path of Exile discussions but also in the Magic: The Gathering community. Chris isn't involved with Wizards of the Coast, as far as I know, and yet he still has a positive reputation because he behaves in a manner that people like. Ironic that people want to permit naming and shaming for scammers (i.e. label them by reputation) but it's not ok to allow other people's reputations to be formed. " This is another rather interesting idea. I kind of like it - a vote comes with a comment. Something to consider for sure! And maybe even the right solution - I'm not sure. Hesitant lurkers are often voters who enjoy the content, though. Why might they be hesitant? New community - getting a feel - just looking for info - and other stuff that doesn't need to be repeated, if it's even valid. Is it reasonable that they should speak publicly before casting a vote? I rather like it, but I'm still not sure. What if 90% of the readers never post is the standard? I'm just pulling a number, but if people don't post by choice but are a large amount of the forum traffic which is providing a service to its customers (ie, the best source of PoE information), then it may not be reasonable to expect that. I still rather like it. The vote would have to be anonymous though, because often people don't post for fear of retaliation against their opinion. (that's on us, sorry). More realistically, perhaps an anonymous comment could go along with it, and submitting gibberish could be forbade with consequences. Hmmm... sounds like a whole new layer of moderator work. It might not be unreasonable though. Maybe something new and novel, or a bust! Not to be wishy washy, but I don't actually have the answers, and I like the idea that this discussion might bring them to light. Last edited by Shaihalud222#6881 on Oct 21, 2015, 5:20:01 PM

Scenario:
Patch notes are posted, 1st page is "Cool" & "Wow I actually got on the first page" posts, on page16 is a good comment from someone who remarks how a certain change is going to affect the game that hasn't been mentioned up to that point. What is the better experience for a user? A) Official forums Read every comment for 16pages to eventually find the good comment and respond to it. No way to make it more visible for anyone else and if the thread is now 30pages long it is now too difficult to directly respond to them or follow the thread from other posters on the same subject. B) reddit Good comment is upvoted to top comment already, you read it 1st and get to see a flow of other comments in response. The "Cool" & "1st" comments are at the bottom as well as some jerk who called GGG a bunch on incompetent idiots cos they nerfed his build a few patched back. ? |

C.) Create a thread dedicated to the observation. Either as somebody that wants to discuss effects of said observation or as the observer bringing the observation to light.
But you should search to make sure such a thread does not already exist. #interwebzetiquette Hey...is this thing on? Last edited by LostForm#2813 on Oct 21, 2015, 5:30:30 PM

^You could easily attain the same result without requiring the need for a down-vote system.
Since the later is prone to abuses and negativity, while the former offers the same end-result. Peace, -Boem- Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

" Maybe so, but that means actually coming into the forum and finding that post, I would guess that there are many people that only come to the forum to read the patch notes and not participate in General Discussion. At least the reddit post kills 2 birds with 1 stone. EDIT; In response to Boem, I am all for an only upvote system, I believe that is all that is required and I would even see reddit drop it or not let posts go below zero, All we need is for the cream to rise as that will push the rest down by default. " No the devs get upvoted because they work for GGG. Chris doesn't receive many upvotes in Gamedev or MTG. This is fandom voting. And do you really think Charan would deserve to be downvoted no matter what he posts on reddit because of reputation. The idea of a Karmasystem on bulletinboards and phpbb was to differenciate quality and shitposters. You needed to put effort in posts. On reddit on the other hand you can spam a meme and receive 500+ upvotes from 1 posting. Do you really thing that a picture would receive many upvotes? The traders have another background. They don't want to waste time with "BM traders". It's not like they stalk the traders forever. If the accusations wouldn't be true then they can always defend themselves but what I heard is that when word gets out they change their nick. @Shaihalud222 The problem with anonymity is karma farming/destruction via multis. It's a FTP game creating an account takes 30 sec. So there needed to be some restrictions similar to prevent spambots. The vbulleting boards/phpbb board karma worked that way that you could only add and remove a limited amount of karma per timeframe depending on your participation but that is also hard to implement. |

" Depends on what the user wants :) If they want to fool around, post '1st' comments, engage in silliness in Offtopic or General Discussion or vent on GGG for nerfing their build, which would be the better experience? Both the forum and reddit have their uses. I don't see why we should turn one into the other. I feel as if reddit users want to turn the forum into reddit - why? Reddit isn't the only forum format known to man. This forum's unfortunate episode with overly zealous moderation doesn't mean it should be subjected to a complete overhaul. They should at least give the new system some time and see how it works before introducing other changes. You have to be realistic about these things. I've been told I don't have the right to post here... so I'll show the respect that is now due the poster by the code of conduct and not post.
Oh wait. I guess I shouldn't. |
