Path of Desync?
I know all the technical implications behind lag and desync, as I am a network engineer / software engineer of over 20 years experience. Synchronization is a key element in many time-based network protocol or applications, so I deal with it a lot as well.
While lag and desync are different, network delay would obviously make desync worse, mainly because the sychronization process is done through network. Therefore, this portion of the desync problem is universal to all network applications. However, PoE's desync issue mainly results from design, rather than latency induced ones. The complains here are mainly on the severity of decync in PoE, and GGG's inability to fix or provide workarounds for the problem. |

" Imo if they ever get their hands on some proper servers they should switch to a wait for server model, it should be perfectly playable for everyone with pings below 100ms and would actually bring out the full potential of the game like dodging stuff with movement skills etc which really can't be relied upon atm with desync as it is. Granted that would fuck over people with bad connections or people that are very far from the servers, but I believe that's better than fucking over everyone. Just my 2 cents. ign: ecogen Last edited by ecogen#5029 on May 12, 2014, 2:58:10 AM

groundslam doesn't desync
and if you are US, it doesn't desync at all compared to other skills | |
I don't even understand the argument going back and forth in he community.
The game is great but whoever says desync is as much a problem in most other online games is just wrong. I have just started the game (20 hours) and it is a lot of fun. But desync is a game changer (no melee classes for me) that never reduced the game experience in any other game i can remember. Of course there are occasional lags or rubberbanding or whatever you wanne call it in other games. But those instances were few and far between. When I first encountered this issue I thought something is wrong with my connection or hardware. Later I checked steam forums, regedit forums, youtube comments, poe forums and other posts in different forums. And this problem is cause for a lot of annoyance with literally thousands of ppl. I mean if the game was simply bad then prolly nobody would bother to get so frustrated. The bad thing is that the game is great but its potential is severely limited. I played the following games online over the last years and never once had cause to stop playing certain parts of the game (in poe: melee classes) or stop the game alltogether: L4d1+2 Sc2 D2 Ravenshield Cod Modern Warfare 2 Again, there were issues occasionally. Even moments of lag (or desync?) where you would curse and get frustrated. But nowhere remotely as much as I have experienced in this game. It is clearly somehow related to the architecture of the game and the choice to focus on anti cheat. But imho I would rather have a few cheaters but have a 98 % smooth gameplay the way the game was intended to be. The recognition software for cheaters gets better and better. And while you will always have some cheaters with support tickets and such a big community that will be able to identify cheating candidates sooner or later I really don't share the developers choice to sacrifice the 'intended/smooth' gameplay in order to universally deny any cheating whatsoever. I would rather have the economy hampered a few times a month or year by cheaters and listen to the complaints about cheaters in the community than be limited to my summoner (and maybe mage configurations), unable to enjoy so many awesome classes. Cheaters are annoying occasionally and can cause a lot of problem occasionally. The emphasis is on the occasionally as there are ways to greatly reduce cheating. But this massive desync is not merely annoying. It is a factor that simply takes away 30 - 60 % of the fun in the game depending on your playstyle. Even though sooner or later everybody wants to try out melee classes. Hell, there are prolly dozens upon dozens of skills, abilities and houndreds of items that are simply out of the game for me. Apart from trading those items to enhance my summoner. I mean, check the internet for this issue. There are thousands of ppl who said they would play the game but got frustrated with this problem. It is a bad merketing choice to favor cheaters over gamers. And that's what's happening. It is truly a waste of a great game. Just a waste and if I was head of GGG I would immediately - and with all the resources I have at my disposel - stir in the complete opposite direction and struggle with all my might to 'smooth' the gameplay. I am sure they sat at a round table and controversly discussed the issue. But in the end, no matter how many of them agreed to follow this policy, they simply came to a wrong conclusion. They have to realize their priorities just wrong. Maybe they haven't played their own game enough to realize how bad that issue really is and how limiting it is. Any sane gamer will immediately point their fingers on that problem and say "yeah the game is cool and i luv this and like that and...wait....ok what's this. This really sux!!". That's all there is to it. It has to be changed. As soon as possible. |

Wouldn't it be possible to implement something like "auto /oos"-placeholder-script till they get the real problem sorted out? I've hotkeyed /oos but hitting it all the time really sucks ass, and playing on merciless and dying because of occasional desync really sucks. And I don't get the "get over it"-pro desync comments, they're plain stupid.

Forced synch is what they did. Frequent global auto oos will make them run out of servers.
