Why do some players lose their passion for PoE ?

I completely lost interest just before the launch after playing a year at least, i restarted playing a month ago, i don't know how much i'll keep at it, but for now it's good, i even spent nicely in the shop few days ago. Why did i lost interest? i have no clue i guess things wear out after a bit, also desynch used to go on my nerves, that's why i switched from HC to ambush and don't regret it at all. But i did came back because i felt the game was really nicely build and they are still things to be done, i like games that are rich and i think it pay off. Adding a new act is really a good move, that is really what is missing at this point, for me at least, new maps, new tile sets, bosses, stories...

I currently am taking a break from POE. It's not a bad game. I have played it on and off for about 2,5 years now. Longer than any other game in the past.

The reason I kept playing was trying out builds. I think only 2 were succesfull. One casual minion-build in closed beta, but got nerfed after 2 months. One casual life leech spectral throw build, but that one was boring to play. All the more special builds more or less failed to work. Strangely thats not the real problem. I am still excited to try out new builds.

The real problem and the reason I stopped playing is that after about 600-800 hours of POE I only had one exalt drop and chanced a soul taker. That's all...
Never got a 6 link and tried very hard. Never had luck on rares or unique drops. Crafting was always a failure. I have seen at least 2000 rares and they were never good enough to sell for more than a chaos. I have had around 40 unique drops and they sucked. All of them.

So after playing 2,5 years I have 50 exalts of gear and about one somewhat working (level 80 doing level <74 maps) build. No Atziri for me.
Thinking of spending another 500 hours for maybe getting a character that could do Atziri is not very rewarding. POE endgame is too time consuming and not rewarding enough for me.

I'll be back when there are some interesting updates. That will be in the beginning of autumn I think. Can't wait for the ambush boxes in the standard league. I hope they appear regularly and do not become very rare.

Honestly, if you got a soul taker, that alone is better than a lot of people will have managed, so your luck wasn't THAT bad. For the rest, it's probably more about slowly building up from a series of small drops rather than relying on one big one.

But yeah, either way if the game isn't fun for you anymore, then it's time to take a break from it for a bit. I'm pretty much the same way...played a lot of different builds, many not very good, but fun at least up until level 50 or 60ish. A few reasonably successful ones that got as far as the low 80s.

Too many people treat the game as a job or as something where they HAVE to be as efficient as possible and get as far as they possibly can. It's supposed to be fun. If a character is no longer fun, stop playing it and try something else. If the game itself stops being fun, take a break and come back when something new is added or even just when you think you're ready to play again.

The XP penalty on death is my main turn off from this game. What's the point of playing this game if the game mechanics is preventing you from progressing?

Nah, I'll just play another game.
I think there are 2 main reason for players leaving POE.

1. Players getting crushed in Merciless --> never able to come up with a viable endgame build --> they gave up

2. Players trying to 5link/6link their endgame stuff and failing.

I know at least 5 players who left the game because of that.
And im starting to feel their pain too.

At the point you start linking a item and fail at it, your whole game perspective is fucked, because you start to blame RNG at any given time.

Maybe those ppl should just let it go, but its mostly a huge design mistake by GGG.

There should be some incentive to keep trying, like a increased chance with every failed fusing, account-bound.

Until such a BASIC game feature is implemented, more and more players will just ragequit POE forever.

And im pretty sure i will be one of them, pretty soon.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

Coz they not drops GG uniques like shavs / soul taker / coe. For example:
You are bored, want to stop playing > coe drops > wohoo playing like crazy for next 2 months ( used myself as example here... )

there comes a point in time, when even the fucking mother of RNG jackpots would not change one's understanding of the bleak complete picture.
would not change the fact, you only got rewarded because 'Aliens, the exact same way you got screwed previously because 'Aliens.

there comes a point in time, when even the shiniest damn MTX or the ugliest new monster or boss, would not impress one who knows for an absolute fact, the gaping holes which these come to try and hide - are here to stay, forever.

I'd like to believe you are still young and naive.
wish I still was.

i quit because i get frustrated with farming hundreds of hours for nothing... i play mf chars only and i only get shit uniques... if there was actually a chance for me to see dropps like kaoms or shavs id have some fun because i could try all the OP builds but for now ill have to watch streamers and QQ

I think the game takes a wrong approach convering lategame characters.

The game is designed to take very much time to make a char "super lategame able" but in my opinion it should be a lot easier to make super late game characters to encourage making new chars.

In another game I saw a "Heir" system where you played 1 char for like ~60 hours and than you could reset him to give a new char a permanent advantage.
In PoE resetting could mean sending your char to another league.

Maybe something like this:

make Char on "Heir" league, get bonus of +20% more XP. After reaching level 85 you can send him to standard allowing you to make another char in the heir league. For every char you retired you get +1STR/+1DEX/+1INT or weapon upgrades which work like a weaponskin and give a small stat boost and can be handed over to new chars.
The heir league may have only 1 char.

And of course the stupid "inconstant progression" has to stop. Losing all your stuff for gambling is not fun and only frustrating.

Less "all or nothing" mechanics. No "negative randomness" and smoothed out "positve randomness"
i Hate the close camera view.

if they let me zoom out 25% further i might start playing POE again.

for now i play D3 and i love it. I also play Marvel heroes.

The close camera Zoom in POE is a game killer for me. i just dont like it.
