Rofl yea. But is the gaming industry to blame? Or are we just changing as we age? That is a question that has me plagued lately. It sincerely feels like the gaming industry is to blame. It just seems like they want to make as much money on a game with minimal effort and care nothing about a long lasting replay-able game. But ofc I would think that. Does that make it true? Or have I just lost the innocent of youth?

You're nostalgic :) When you're a kid, everything is much more new, and much more awesome. But it's not always truth, our memories are almost always inaccurate.
The industry is partially to blame too, but it's mostly piracy that makes them so money hungry, together with big-money corporations understanding that virtual entertainment is the future and poisoning development.
I personally went on a replay tour the last years for stuff that was awesome in my youth. I was always a PC gamer, never owned a console and probably never will, I like tech and customisation and hardware - even if I have to fix things up sometimes. Many games I replayed were borderline unplayable, and even those that I've managed to enjoy again (Baldur's Gate, Blood Omen, Vampire: Redemption/Bloodlines etc.) missed an amazing amount of accessibility features, which sometimes I alleviated by installing mods.

So I'd say that modern gaming is in a neutral place. Some things are crap, some things are amazing. Probably in 10 yrs all games will be online-only and many of them subscription-based. It's just too powerful to ignore - if you want to make money. I can see how this is quite annoying, but I'd prefer it like this, if only the games would be awesome.

About 6 months before D3 was released I re-installed D2 to get in the mood. I had a freaking blast! There was only 1 thing I could NOT get myself to overlook. It was the graphics, or lack thereof. I played it for 6 months straight and loved it like I did all those years ago. So there is something there. But 6 months is no test of time. I doubt I could have re-played it for as long as I played it when I was younger. I have been spoiled with new graphics.

I think the key is that in terms of technical ability, finesse, refinement, and game design do's and don'ts, the industry is HUGELY more refined than it was even a decade ago. However, in regards to artistry, creativity, freedom to take chances and try new things, willingness to appeal to smaller audiences, and many other things, the industry is garbage by comparison to even 10 years ago. When I say artistry and creativity, I don't mean that the people that design the engines for like, Farcry 3 or whatever, have no artistry or creativity; it's difficult for me to describe with any level of concision, and I don't want to derail, so yeah...

I believe there is a patch, or some sort of mod, that makes D2 run in modern resolutions; I've seen screenies and it looks sexy as hell surprisingly (the same patch worked on Fallout 2 and Planescape: Torment as well IIRC). So you could rectify that problem if you wanted, whereas we're fucked when it comes to the current games (unless the company "graces" us with DLC to "enhance" (see fix and/or nickle & dime us) their game).

Diablo 2 at modern, widescreen resolutions, looks amazing; though things get sorta tiny, lol.

I think the widescreen mod does not work properly for D2, meaning that with increased resolution comes increased visual area, so you see things (i.e. mob packs etc.) that the devs wanted to be hidden. I know I wanted to install it when I wanted to play D2.

I assume it wouldn't matter much though for somebody that already finished the game a few times anyway...

I can't remember, but if that's the case it's probably something along the lines of being able to see mobs, but you're unable to attack them or aggro them, because they're outside of intended range, yet now visible due to the mod.

hmm... I found it, but can't seem to find any video or SS of this in action.

If you found the one I had, I can vouch for it because I used it personally for about a week or so before I got distracted by raiding with my WoW guild again and quite playing. It SEEMED fine.
