I'm using Windows 8 consumer preview and SmartScreen detect PoE as unsolicited apps, and block it.
User can install it anyway via "more options".
BTW i suggest you to test installer on Win8 and solve this problem.
Gathered all these up......the Digibluez suggestion seemed to fix several players.

Here's an example of one I used to install the Power Tools for Team Foundation Server:

C:\Windows\System32\msiExec.exe -i C:\Users\rternier\Documents\Downloads\tfpt.msi

Once you have a batch file (.bat) with that in it, right click it, and choose Run As Administrator.

Windows 7 x64, the previous mentioned did not fix it, but what did was.

...right click the PathOfExileInstaller.msi file.
...choose troubleshoot compatibly,it will look for file errors and fix them. told me skip version check, pushed start the program... and worked

Same Problem when trying to install before

1. Login as admin (only worked for me as real "Administrator" and did NOT as normal user with admin rights!)

2. Right-click and do what digibluez wrote

Now installation should start and work.... when you switch back to your normal (non-admin, but adminrights) user you can start PoE and it will begin to patch

Thanks again for the workaround...

... important: You need to be Administrator, not just a user with admin rights!!!

How to become a real administrator on win7 or vista?!

Enable hidden Admin Account

This video shows how to install .msi files in windows 7 and got me up and running after failing on my own.

Youtube Video

Been playing the game a couple of days now thanks to this video, hopefully it helps anyone else that's never dealt with this type of file before.

Found a way to install, right click, go to properties, security, change all stats for all users to full access, and it will work. It seems even if your admin, your profile might not be flagged, so flag it.

This is what I did to get it working on my Win Vista 32-bit

Got Hidden Admin Running via this link --

Enable Hidden Admin Account

Then logged into the Admin account.

Then followed the steps off of this site ---

Windows Installer Fixes

When I got to the last step, and rebooted I logged back into the Admin account, and ran the msi install file and that got the patch client installed. Then put my system back into normal start-up and installed the game. Turned off Admin account.

"I suggest you try to install the msi file in Safe Mode to verify Whether it is a Windows Installer issue or not.

Windows Installer will not work under Safe Mode by default. To make Windows Installer work under safe mode, you need to create a registry entry for every type of safe mode you are logged in to.

1. Start the computer in Safe Mode.
2. Click Start, type CMD and press Enter.
3. Please Run the Following ... [2] commands [one] by one.

REG ADD "HKLM \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ SafeBoot \ Minimal \ MSIServer" / VE / T REG_SZ / F / D "Service"

net start msiserver

4. Then, Windows Installer will be started.
5. Try to install the msi file.

and made the final steps from the YT movie by using the CMD panel Youtube Video

Ok, got a few things to try:

#1
"

1- Create folder C:\Temp
2- Navigate to Control Panel/User Accounts/Change My Environment Variables
3- Change the value of both TMP and TEMP to C:\Temp (Default is %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp)

Reboot, try the MSI file.

#2
"

Start > Search > Regedit (might need to run as Admin)
navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
Rename MachineThrottling to _MachineThrottling

Should not need to reboot, try the MSI file.

#3
"

1. Delete the string values (Except for (Default)) in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
2. Start gpedit.msc
3. Expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, expand Internet Communication Management, and then click Internet Communication settings.
4. In the details pane, double-click Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program, and then click Enabled.

May need a reboot here, then try the MSI.

Windows 7 SP1, fully updated.

oh and I am installing as an administrator.

I did however solve the problem.

I created a new user account and installed it through that.

Worked absolutely fine.

SOLVED. All you have to do is not press OK when it tells you it failed. I've been playing for a while now, with th "There is a problem..." screen up.

PLEASE DRAW OTHERS' ATTENTION TO THIS THREAD AS IT CONTAINS THE SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM.

ok, i figured out what Erithrius meant by this.
when you get the there is a problem box up dont press ok. you will have a path of exile shortcut icon on your desktop and if you dont press ok then you can run the launcher and play the game..

after the launcher has patched go to the destination folder and copy the files to a new folder, you can then press ok in the error box and it will roll back the client but will still leave the grinding gears and path of exile folders.
simply copy the files back into the path of exile folder and run the game and enjoy :)

Thank you for the Information. Added to the above list.

On the Defense+ part, you can fine tune that to prevent install errors.
