Community News: New Forum Management

is anyone else scared?

no this all sounds great to me tbh. Ive always felt like the forums could do with slightly more nazi modding than they have, some of you probably think thats pretty ironic coming from me (4Head) but seriously, this place can get pretty toxic at times and I feel like things that could be nipped in the bud can just spiral into madness left unchecked and before you know it theres like 10 of us on probation and the thread is locked etc, that doesnt do anyone any good.

Within any group of people you will always have a % split of how they will behave/act/support, for example:

- 20% (PRO) will be totally committed to the cause, support you to the hilt and back you in.

- 60% (NEUTRAL) will float around the middle, they'll support most things, but have potential to be influence either way.

- 20% (BLOCKERS) will go against the grain. These are your people blockers, negative types who will try to derail things for their own personal reasons.

The general idea is to have the PROs influence the NEUTRALS as much as possible and turned them into PROs. At the same time, hopefully move some BLOCKERS into the NEUTRAL or PRO territory. Hopefully, what happens is that you end up with more and more PROs and very few BLOCKERS who you will never be able to change. Those BLOCKERS end up feeling more and more isolated and either by their own will or poor behaviour will move on anyway.

I really like this line of thought.

All in all, thumbs up tbh. I wish this forum was a bit more like Ziggy Ds chat and somewhere the devs actually paid attention to, took part in etc, and often the atmosphere here is just not conducive to that at all. I dont think theres anything wrong with using bad language, expressing passionate views, having strong disagreements with people etc, but there has to be a legit purpose behind it, negativity and antagonism for its own sake is truly toxic and if left unchecked it spreads.

People say hands off approach, but I feel like the more detached the devs and support are from the forums sometimes the more of a free for all it becomes, if you look at ziggys stream chat his involvement in his chat helps set an example and sets a tone, people tend to fall in line with it, if anyone remembers kripps chat from back in the day, totally hands off post what you like, it was just a waterfall of cancer and hate speech. Were grown ups, well, most of us, and most of the time we dont need or want mum keeping us in line, but I dont think that necessarily means leaving the forums completely uninfluenced and 'anything goes' is healthy or conducive to functioning in the way it should which is to be a resource and a center of info, debate and socialising for the community.
O almighty Bex, may you bestow upon us a great and funderful future.

... Unless of course the mightier Chris Wilson tells you to inflict suffering upon us. Don't worry, we'll still love you.
I like many kinds of games 😊
I think I've already mentioned this in the past but here are three things that, in my opinion, would help improve the forum and its management in general:

- get rid of the drop-down menue in the navigation bar and send everyone to the forum's index instead. While there are people who just don't care where to post and those that still think that GD is superior to everything else, a lot of users simply aren't aware of the other boards. I've seen people genuinely surprised after telling them that there is a separate section for bug reports or audio feedback.

- "consistency" also in regards of moving threads. E.g. the "Round the World"/non-English community threads. Some still float around in General/Gameplay discussion and other boards. Maybe it's just me but it looks a bit messy. At least with those there shouldn't be much of a backlash/discussion when moved :-D

- Revamp search (again). It's still a bit clunky and the search options could be expanded for better results. Also, I would swap colours with the [new thread] button to make it more visible.

:-)
@Bex : Unless you start to insta-kick-ban-shitlist all childish whiners and crying babies, Reddit ( which seems to be better moderated ) would be more enjoyable to read than official forum. Maybe that's why some GGG staff prefer to post in Reddit rather than there.

while you are at it, could you please bring a new forum structure too?

class subforums are an outdated concept for example! that's a shared feeling

I think it's entirely too late for this, but it'd be awesome if there were a rule against editing people's quotes other than to summarise or highlight points. That is to say, changing the words outright. Even when it's done as a joke or facetiously, in most other contexts this would be considered libel or slander.

It's far too easy for someone coming into a conversation halfway through to see a changed quote and assume that's what the person originally said.

Like I said, I think internet/forum culture might be too far down the track to change that, but it'd be good. People need to (re)learn to respect the value of words, even if (or especially if) they don't agree with them.
Warhammer 40k Inquisitor: where shotgunning is not only not nerfed, it is deeply encouraged.

Dogma > Souls, but they're masterworks all. You can't go wrong.

I was right about PoE2 needing to be a separate, new game. It was really obvious.

That's not why. They do it because it's easier to stay visible and current, and because it's easier to make off-the-cuff remarks instead of official announcements.

Every time I try to take part in reddit I am bombarded with such a cavalcade of hatred it leaves me utterly stunned. I've been called things there that would get a person almost instantly banned from here and pretty much any other forum I've used, so I've no clue what you mean when you say 'better moderated'. In lieu of 'childish whiners and crying babies', the poe subreddit is infested with sharks and jackals. Mind you, I've read threads there that seem quite civil so maybe it's. just. me.

At any rate, no. I completely disagree with what you've said...and I doubt I'm alone.

What I'd like to address first is the toxicity of discussions and consistency in forum moderation.

Thank you. A lot.

what is whinging

thats the second time ive seen it today

is it kind like whining?

It is the New Zealand version of whining.

British, actually. We Commonwealth dregs inherited it.

It's part of a number of colonial terms that are both less acerbic and more dismissive than their American counterparts.

Whinging > whining
Chucking a wobbly > hissy fit
Spitting the dummy > throw in the towel
Stroppy > moody or grumpy
