A word on Neogaf, if you were to apply their standards, Bex, you would have to close literally half the threads around here and ban half of the users x) I don't think thats feasible.

yeah you are correct

The best forums I have seen use a more hands off approach

though when one of their very few rules are broken the hammer comes down hard
I dont see any any key!

what is whinging

thats the second time ive seen it today

is it kind like whining?

It is the New Zealand version of whining, but usually a slightly higher pitch at the end - scaling up from a lower pitch.

Think of it as expressing a negative comment as a question.

Instead of "You guys suck for not giving me a beta key." It would be "You guys suck for not giving me a beta key?"

EDIT: It is also sometimes important to drag out the last syllable.

"giving me a beta keeeeeeeeeeeeeeey?" Kind of like a spoiled child.

I feel you.

You are marked like myself to fight against the flow..

You can be a lunatic, a village outcast or you can be a visionary and a leader who thinks outside of the box.
I am the light of the morning and the shadow on the wall, I am nothing and I am all.

I was a forum mod on a little sci-fi fandom board some years ago. We had a section called "No Holds Barred."

You could post anything there that didn't break the law (such as porn, drug deals, what have you). Otherwise, you could post whatever the hell you felt moved to. Two rules applied: You kept your NHB conflicts in NHB, under penalty of severe repercussions if it bled out into main forum, and, since you knew what you were getting into, you had no recourse to complain to staff about how awfully you had been treated or the terrible names you had been called, except to report any unlawful activity.

It acted as a very handy sink-trap for those who wanted to vent, while polite forum society stayed well away.

Might be something to consider.

Good luck, Bex and associates! =^[.]^=
=^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/

=-[.]-= sad or sleepy / =*[.]*= dazzled / =^[.]~= wink / =~[.]^= naughty wink / =9[.]9= rolleyes #FourYearLie
nvm
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Yea..... Lol. Get it?
I am sending you this message to let you know that I have removed your signature as it is designed to mislead others. Please refrain from using similar signatures in the future. - Rob_GGG
I work for a large-ish company and I a member of our "Culture Council" (no Culture Club or Jedi Council jokes please... head them all :P). Our company spends large $ investing in analysing our workplace culture, finding gaps and implementing actions to improve those gaps. As CC members we act as "champions of culture improvement" liaising with HR and helping the other business units improve their cultural behaviours.

So why explain this?

Within any group of people you will always have a % split of how they will behave/act/support, for example:

- 20% (PRO) will be totally committed to the cause, support you to the hilt and back you in.

- 60% (NEUTRAL) will float around the middle, they'll support most things, but have potential to be influence either way.

- 20% (BLOCKERS) will go against the grain. These are your people blockers, negative types who will try to derail things for their own personal reasons.

The general idea is to have the PROs influence the NEUTRALS as much as possible and turned them into PROs. At the same time, hopefully move some BLOCKERS into the NEUTRAL or PRO territory. Hopefully, what happens is that you end up with more and more PROs and very few BLOCKERS who you will never be able to change. Those BLOCKERS end up feeling more and more isolated and either by their own will or poor behaviour will move on anyway.

Obviously internet forums are a different environment, but not that totally different. They're still a congregated society of people with their own behaviours and we all have potential to influence others ("the ripple effect").

Sure, moderators already exist in the forums, but it doesn't have to be left up to them to be culture champions. We can all influence cultural behaviour by our own actions and interactions with others. If we regular forum posters use "Constructive Styles", as opposed to "Aggresive/Passive Defensive Styles" in our communications... then perhaps we can help influence the NEUTRALS and BLOCKERS on the forums.

Human synergistics circumplex (Constructive v Aggressive v Passive behaviour styles):
Spoiler

TL:DR ... We can influence others by the way we engage with them. It shouldn't just be left up to the Moderators and CM.

nope!

But I gather from your forum signature that you like to tell what you consider the truth, but cannot do so in a manner that's civil or polite... thus leading to you being put on probation for breaking the forum guidelines or the ToU.

Sound about right?
