how do they work?

I think someone is getting paranoid here.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.

ah, the old public execution in town square. effective, I'm sure.
but what good is swinging the ban-hammer on the buyers, if none of the sellers get hit?

The point was not really to humiliate and shame buyers, so public executions is not really a good comparison.
The thread posts could simply be aggregated stats along the line of:

"
X number of accounts were banned this period
Y of the accounts were found thanks to community feedback
"
Then you could have a graph showing number of banned users this period compared to older periods, and some other supplemental data point to make it clear to people that reporting has a discernible effect.

The whole point would be to let people see that helping and reporting has a purpose and means more cheaters will get banned.
Alternatively they need to respond to community reports and argue why they do not do something with the relevant account.
if rmt or not is not my problem. for me, i have invested so much time to my account, to level up everything, i would never ever risk it to loooose.
sure you can start a new account, but hey some years are still wasted if you really start from scratch :)

Repost without picture:
That would work if players actually get banned.

But to me it seems GGG is too dependent on MTX.

Caught followed by PM warning-->Proven
Caught again ban+unban after mailing with support.--->Proven
Caught again and again unban for "good" reason?--->Suspected?
That would explain why the most obvious RMT streamer got banned with an 8 month delay, he literally got shamed in march 2013 already and early april but was banned november 2013.

I also suspect the same goes for botters else I can't explain how some of the most blatant botters got unbanned.

Check the RMT boards there is at last one thread in a month of RMTers being caught but not being punished.
Even though [emoved by Support], he is right here and has my support 100%. I give credit where it is due.

I fucking despise RMT, but let us face the facts here ... nothing will ever be done about it. GGG cannot risk to wipe out more than half their playerbase overnight. Yes it is that rampant. These guys also happen to support the game like mad via mtx’s (NOT everyone who supports also rmt’s, let us get it straight, but the vice versa case is much more likely). I am sick and tired of seeing trade topics and some random unknown guy with a not so distant joindate starts biddings at 50ex. I am supposed to wisen up to the ‘fact’ that I am just acting jealous and these guys with stashes full of exalts and eternals and / or crafted 500ex mirror items ... multiple ones at that! ... were supposed to acquire everything legit? Give me a friggin break, do you know how long you have to flip items and currency via trade and how lucky you have to be at it, countless multiple times? And how many people are dumb and do not know the value of their items like that? How many times can you keep making profit, on a regular basis like that, and acquire a legit stash of eternals and exalts that is so OBSCENE? Then these guys come up with the finished mirror items, how did they even get the currency to craft a single mirror worthy item? That is fucking insane, so much eternals and exalts spent on one craft! And they have tons of crafted items and also bid on items in trade topics that are worth 50 ex minimum at the same time!

GGG know who the major rmters are, I refuse to be thicker than expired milkshake left in the sun for a year like that. They can investigate properly, but taking action is another thing. Every now and then Chris or another developer will tell us they are doing their 100% and we have to keep sending emails to support, well that is all just one big political front. All these guildies with an accumulated wealth of over 1000000 ex, showing them off in trade topics, and literally making a topic to piss off guys like me and john off who know how they got those items and the currency to craft them in the first place, and to piss us off more and do it in GGG's face because they know no action will be taken. Yeah bro, like I have no idea how to swipe my credit card like you do bro! ... I just have better things to spend money on, and I refuse to cheat.

And all these streamers with godlies and mirrors after a couple of weeks in a new league? Who die multiple times in HC and a week later have shavs and kaoms again .... give me a break, please I am sick of hearing how that can even remotely be legit by any stretch of reason and common sense on the face of this fucking planet.

I sent proof to GGG too, about one of the lvl's 100 on the ladder, who I know for a fact is a dirty rmter and jsper. About a week ago, till now he isn’t banned yet and I doubt he will ever be.

Fact: Eating a single grape every morning at 6:30am (EST) will completely prevent cervical cancer.

Fact: Chris is not only The Batman, he is also The Superwoman.

Fact: Spouting random bullshit and calling it a fact does not make it so.
