I'll answer your question with another OP
Why do you believe the Casual players should be regarded in a higher favor than the more hardcore ones? Money? that seems to be the rallying cry of the casual when demanding such core changes to a game "Make it so my grandma can play it and you'll be rich!" Is that it? Well, I got news for you a game doesn't have to cater to the casual market to make a profit. so there goes that argument so again why should the devs cater to you and abandon their vision of the game? Obviously from the amount of supporters and players and the replies to this and many other topics like it, many people are just fine with the system. So what makes you so special? Why can you not allow us to keep this game the way we like it, and for many of us the BIGGEST reason we supported it. can you not see how even this so called "option" dilutes that?
The reason I ask this is the swarm of casual players demanding core mechanic changes that come around seems to just happen in every game these days. "I can only play in 30 second bursts this isn't fair!" "I dont like this game, make all these changes so i will!" Its tiring and annoying to see this group of people follow us to every game and ruin it. Yes we do get defensive and sometimes step out of line but with good reason. We have watched you so called casuals destroy just about everything we loved about the games of old and for once we thought we found our bastion of hardcore gaming but when we see this happening all over again your damn right we will defend ourselves and not give in as we know from experience once you give the casuals an inch they go a mile. It wont stop with FFA loot and by the end of it we'll all be left with a shell of a game that was once something to be treasured.
Awesome post.
As I've said soooo many times before, you seem to believe that a game that is still in beta (lower than a 1 on the version number) is absolutely perfect. There are changes and compromises that can be made in order to appeal to a wider crowd without ruining the experience. You "hardcore" people are so afraid of change that you started QQing the second they released a patch re-balancing a zone. You don't actually respond to any arguments or even consider the option of having the game consist of a best-of-both-world option to choose either-or type of loot. Point being, you vision of a "hardcore bastion" is nothing but an unbalanced, ridiculously time-consuming mess of a game.
I love how you says the casuals have destroyed everything, without the "casuals" the gaming industry would be 1/4 of what it is now, and none would probably even be willing to attempt a business model like this.

Well, what about the fact that melee classes have a distinct advantage from the get go? It might take at least half of the timer to get within distance to pick up an item, not even taking into account the fact that you could be prevented from getting into the area in which it dropped due to a hostile AoE or just being blocked by monsters.
it would probably work better if they kept the timer running at least until you are out of combat. That wouldn't slow anything down because you shouldn't be picking up loot while fighting anyway.
Melee classes are also inherently at a higher risk of death by virtue of having to stand in with mobs to deal their damage. The ranged classes definitely have to pay closer attention to drops because of this, but particularly in Hardcore this is a fair trade off, imo.
Melee characters also have greater defenses to counteract this higher-risk, but with the current system, does this mean they should get all of the loot? And if they are in there soaking up damage, what about the ranged damage-dealers that actually kill the stuff? In an argument about who is more valuable to the team, saying that the melee players are worth more is just wrong. And you failed to mention default league, whats wrong with giving the OPTION of a modified loot system to default?

i hope i understand the shortcuts correct
ffa= free for all
instance loot = everybody has their own loot
well i prefer instance loot over ffa loot...or bigger timer on loot. i really dont see any positives about ffa loot but its the game mechanic atm so i deal with it.

The only way to truly make your point, is that you just don't play the game until this is changed.
I myself love the game, but have decided that I won't party up until it's changed. I dislike it immensely especially when you have individuals that do nothing but wait for the loot to drop. It's a ridiculous mechanic and was an issue way back in the DII era...hence the reason they changed it in DIII.
I vote with my dollars and my time. There are other games out there that I can spend time on that isn't frustrating for me, and that's what I'll do.
If/When they change the looting mechanic I'll come back.

Make loot only visible to the person who has the timer, increase the timers to non cocaine-rabbit speed.

I think this is best thing what we can do.. vote with wallet...these pro-instanced loot guys already made their point..fighting against these, who don't share our point of view is pointless..I am going to departure from this game as well with my friends and will watch it progress for a some time.. If something will change, I may come back.. that's all what we can do.

Melee characters definitely don't get all of the loot, players at range just need to pay more attention to drops. Melee chars have to pay a little more attention to positioning and micro than a ranged player. Melee defenses also aren't inherently better than ranged characters, they just *need* to spec heavily defensively due to the increased risk. Ranged have a bit more freedom in speccing for DPS. Again, its not as if ranged characters have no chance to get their drops, they just have to be more attentive. A reasonably fair compromise all around..
And if GGG were forced under pain of death to provide instanced loot to save the game, making it an option in Default only would be an acceptable compromise.

They should at least make the improved looting and option in the default then, the hardcore players have every ability to keep things the way they are and GGG makes more money because they more casual players have the ability to have a decent time in groups. There really isn't any downside for hardcore players.

I like the FFA system for looting..
Anyways..what i dont understand is the rage of the BLIND fanboys?
I see no problem in adding Options...People who like FFA play FFA...People who like instanced, get instanced (determined by the leader group)...Easy as that..
The real problem of the game lately are the sick FANBOYS...they defend it insulting and trash talking and they just scred the game and whole comunity...
fanboys are funny haahaha..they are like ``im a hardcore and u have to be jealous to me..only i get loot``..Losers
between..Poe is an awesome game..i would pretty much stay with FFA option..but i fully defend another options included ingame
