Honestly, D3 is progressing the genre. PoE is a nostalgia game that brings back that diablo 2 feel. I want to play both, that's for sure.

D3 is THE focus of the Dungeon Crawler universe right now. There were many dungeon crawlers before it even as far back as the ASCII game Castle that you may have had if you remember the Commadore 64, but Diablo REALLY set the standard back in 1997. Since Blizzard North (and now just Blizzard) have an established a reputation and have RIDICULOUS money, every game such as Dungeon Siege, Titan Quest, and Fate really have been cloning and hoping for the best. PoE, I think, is that only game that stands a change to compete since it is free so everyone, even the most harsh skeptics, can try it out with no risk and if it is a great game even old Diablo fans (points to self) will keep their account open, and play PoE almost no matter what. I have no brand loyalty so the most fun game is what gets the money for me, if PoE is more fun than D3 ... I guess I wont need D3!

I'm a beta tester for both Path of Exile and Diablo 3.
Objectively Diablo 3 is leagues ahead of Diablo 3 is every possible category.
Let's look at Path of Exile first:
- Good graphics, they look nice but that's it. They're no blending, there's no theme, they just look nice. You can't say a game looks better because of the graphics, if you do you deserve to not rate any game because the way it looks means themes, locale, and design.
- Combat is meh. The combat isn't fluid, and the skills are really basic with no added flare. Combat seems pretty basic where it's hit and run or spam 1 skill essentially.
- Classes are essentially useless. May as well let you choose your gender, age, height, etc because the skill system is opposite of your class design.
- Different modes. Love it. Great idea. Normal, ladder, and hardcore were the norm.. Thank God someone decided to spice it up a bit.
- Over all. It's a game that would be more suitable for the 2005 era. Things have changed. No real mechanics progression in Path of Exile. Feels like they're banking on nostalgia.
- Lore. Couldn't find much of lore.
Diablo 3:
- Graphics. Good to great. They flow well. The areas are nicely designed. The 2d art rendering is spot on and gives a nice painted look. I don't like how characters seem to float on the background though. Should have been blended in better. Levels are nicely designed with great feel, look, themes, and design.
- Combat is fluid, it's responsive, it's unique for each class. Animations are superb for the palette they're using. Great character and monster animations. Game really shines in that area.
- Classes feel different. The two caster classes play totally different and feel totally different. The Monk and Barbarian are you classic quick and hard hitting classes. They feel right and opposite of each other.
- Don't like the idea of Inferno myself but at least they tried something new. Still would like to see more modes.
- Lore. There's gonna be story.
- Diablo has improved mechanics like different resource systems, destructible environments, better quest giving and cut scenes, better boss fights that feel like boss fights, possibly boss fights.
Out of both? Diablo 3 is easily the superior product. There's no question about it. Path of Exile just seems to be stuck in the past.

So... you lost him at a typo eh? That neat, I've heard that other people's opinions are lame anyway.

D3 looks too wowish for my taste, PoE looks like a dark remake of diablo 1 best in the series IMO

PoE will easily be the better game, as it doesn't have what makes D3 terrible.(I'm looking at you Real Money Auction House)

I think people overstate their hatred of D3. The only things that bother me about it are their insistence on online-only (connection can be inconsistent for me and data caps aren't fun for constant connections) and the RMAH enabling so much buying of power with real world money.
But honestly, I've never taken Diablo 3 seriously as a PVP game and as long as I continue not to do so, those people spending all their real money on the game won't interfere with me at all. If I feel like it, I will readily take advantage of trading in the RMAH because it's effectively exactly the same as the gold auction house anyway - I just won't be adding my money onto my account. I'm largely a solo player in this sort of game anyway and with the recent news that combat actions are largely unaffected by latency, my 200-300ms ping won't be an issue when I'm playing alone.

I want to play both and will settle in on the one that is more fun to play. PoE will have to be really impressive to pull the D3 players over. I don't think slightly better will entice the average Diablo player.
As far as the RMAH comments go, it's really no different than being able to buy from 3rd party sites or Ebay back in the old days before they clamped down on digital items.
