Well the beta is the first hour or so which is basically the tutorial.

What kind of challenge did you expect to get out of it?

and then you woke up1
I haven't got to try D3 so I really can't judge it yet, but only thing that is kinda "let down" for me, is the too "happy and bright" graphics. I was hoping for dark and "evil" style of art!
Damn timer, you scary!

And this is why we wait for Path of Exile. ;)
PoE is not really dark..actually, D3 seems to have much darker atmosphere and approach.. they are just using different color palette (which I like TBH - not big fan of desaturated colors)
Quite like the artstyle and design D3 has gone for and really wouldn't say it happy and colourful. Still feels gloomy, grim and haunting in most cases.

This is how I feel. PoE is gritty, but most areas don't really have any atmosphere. I just feels like real life, but grayer and with more dead guys.

PoE will easily be the better game, as it doesn't have what makes D3 terrible.(I'm looking at you Real Money Auction House)

But of course... that's not true.

Every successful online game with any sort of economy or trade system has real money trading. If PoE succeeds no magical goddess of hipsters and indy gaming will descend from the heavens to shield you.

No. It isn't.
It's not even the RMAH that completely turned me off of d3. It's the automatic stat distribution and complete removal of PK.

Some people are claiming that d3 will be better because it will have way more players, and that PoE can't compete with it. This is a really idiotic position. I don't care if d3 is more popular, I base my decision to play a game on whether I enjoy the game, not on whether other people like it.

I don't care if there are fewer players. In fact, a smaller player base would probably make for a better community. Think about how much of the d3 population will consist of farmers and people who buy gear for real money, these are people who will have no shared goals with other players. And since Blizzard games are now being aimed at younger audiences, there will certainly be tons of annoying kids in d3.

I understand that it's important for a game of this type to have a large player base in order to foster a healthy in-game economy. If the in-game economy fails, the game will fail. But I think that PoE could have a healthy economy even with only a small fraction of the market which will be dominated by Blizzard.

Let's say d3 gets 6 million users. If the PoE population is even 2% the size of d3's, that would be 120,000 users. That's plenty of players to have a healthy economy and a strong community. If the PoE population can grow to 5% of the d3 population, that's 300,000 players. More than enough to foster a strong economy.
