The most overused strawman on these forums: "RNG is RNG"
Dodged every edit from Bex. I feel so pro.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawman
"Since the key feature of a straw man is misrepresentation of the original argument, I have extreme difficulty believing the invocation of the Law of Identity is in any way a strawman argument. Generally speaking, the motive for invoking "A is A" is to as part of a proof by contradiction, which isn't a perfect argument but fairly valid nevertheless; unless you expect monsters to drop the exact same things every time (or be based entirely on some form of entropy system, as evasion currently works in the game), then you are advocating some form of RNG, and the question becomes "how much?" instead of a yes/no. What is the most overused strawman on the forums? That's easy: "I am a skilled player and the game doesn't reward me, therefore the game does not reward skill." It's a strawman because there is a misrepresentation — the player's own skill level. There are posters on these forums who claim the equivalent of never rolling a six after rolling a six-sided die thousands of times, scapegoating luck while never taking any accountability for their own contribution to their failure. To all such players, I recommend the following: next time there is a long race (one-week is best, but even a three-hour will suffice), take a moment to actually follow racing — watch some Twitch during it, and look at the standings afterwards (for a welcome change of pace, don't watch Kripp). Watching the streams will show even when trading is allowed, race trading is nothing like Standard trading, remaining very close to self-found; and in many races, trading is outright forbidden. Yet top players succeed, with full transparency so we know they aren't using hacks. Then compare and contrast their efficiency with their time with your own. Chances are you're much, much less skilled than you originally believed. I'll go on record saying I suck at this game... but at least I have the self-awareness to know it, because I'm aware of what is actually possible. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. @ scrotie i agree with your post, however i would like to make a little note.
i think a lot of discontent stems from the comparison between a 6-men dedicated team vs a solo experience. The fact is the 6-men party can spread out RNG between themselves, releasing a lot of it's difficulty, both in game-play and item acquisition points. But then again, it is up to the solo player to understand that this is an intentional design and it is time to "party-up" in order to have the same "fighting chance" as the party-players do. It's from refusing to conform to the design that people end up being discontent. To those players i would say, you chose that path yourself, now walk it with pride exile. Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

"Partying is a very common element of many races, and I agree the game design over-rewards it. However, tracking strong players during solo races — where such party bonuses are of no concern — still has essentially the same effect described. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. Increasing droprates and making stuff easier to link/chrome etc is not the answer to this games longevity for two reasons.
World of warcraft is great at showing why for one aspect. When wow release new content people rush in and start runing heroics and raids like mad, they do it for some weeks then they are fully geared and they go back in to offline mode until next big content patch is released. Its very obvious that when people get what they want the thrill and anticipation aint there anymore so they get bored and quit. When items become more available, prices will go down or plummet totally all depending on how much easier they are to get. Basically if you can farm it yourself there is no reason to buy it. If no one buys anything or trades in general is heavilly diminished even the most hardcore grinders stop playing cause there just aint any reason left to play. Why farm and mf if everyone allrdy found what you trying to sell. Increasing droprates would totally destroy this great game, im pretty damn sure of it. Doing it will result in an influx of players and there will be christmas for a couple of weeks then turn into a ghost town. |

RNG isn't.
If PoE was truly random you could get a Jah rune drop, or a plate of Sushi. If RNG was RNG than your chances of getting a Kaom's would be the same as getting a white glorious plate. What PoE has is a semi-random drop system with parameter limits that the player can raise through increasing challenge. What people (complaining about the RNG) really seem to want is more RNG and less scripting that limits RNG. "The only legitimate use of a computer is to play games." - Eugene Jarvis
