Out of curiosity - still not having played maps - has anyone tried Frost Wall + Cast on Damage Taken for mitigating Shock and Horror's lightning beam?
As devs have stated that it is similar to Searing Bond, which I am pretty sure penetrates Frost Wall, I doubt it.
The answer to how the devs want the encounter to happen is all there in the boss room and the dev response in this thread. Her lightning beam attack is interrupted by terrain, according to the devs. There are at least two columns in the boss room that a player can use to LoS/block the beam, as long as they are aware enough to notice it happening.
IMO, the issue is that too many players seem to think that they can just brute force their way through the game and that any mobs that can't be "brute forced" must obviously be broken/overtuned.
Where is there stated a requirement that you kill bosses while in a map?
Where is it stated that you must do maps in order to gear/level?
All of this QQ over individual choices made by players that don't want to/can't accept the consequences of their choices/actions.
Before the ranting over "but I can't get 'good' exp anywhere else", or "but I can't get good gears outside of maps", and before someone checks my profile to point out that I don't have any map ready toons: no argument that you can attempt to make in regards to maps will invalidate the statement that YOU CHOOSE to participate in certain activities. GGG is providing various, sometimes new, consequences for these choices which all offer players a new set of choices ("How am I going to overcome this mechanic and beat this boss?")
You make the choice to roll the map, you choose to place the map in the device, you choose to enter the portal, you choose to enter the boss room and pull the boss, you choose how to approach the encounter. I fail to see GGG holding a gun to your head and forcing any of those decisions, and yet so many players want to hold the developers responsible...
In this thread: Players express frustration that GGG is not feeding player entitlement because they produce content that is hard to overcome.
Disagree. Games should have balance. Not extreme ramp ups with the rest easy. We aren't talking about 77/78 maps here. 77 shipyard boss is way easier than any of these.

So, you want to argue that only in maps are area "bosses" an order of magnitude more difficult than other mobs in the area...and I want to introduce you to Hailrake, the Conqueror Worm, Kole (this one is on the fringe, but it fits), Merveil's "daughters" and a whole host of other area bosses that refute your statement. Interestingly enough, the mentioned mobs all share another thing in common with map bosses, in that they are all optional (you don't have to do Hailrake to progress content).

Seriously?
1) This game is about finding loot. I'm not running any map that doesn't have a loot pinata I can kill at the end. It's bad enough that the pinatas that can be killed don't shower you with loot quantities similar to the Merveil, Piety, and Dominus pinatas.
2) Past mid 70's, maps are the only decent way to get XP. What's more, maps are the only way to find the top end items. You certainly are not going to win any ladder race or find top end gear without playing maps.

Just want to point out that people who have guns to their head choose to do things too. And, GGG does the closest thing to putting a proverbial gun to the player's head, by forcing them to only level inside maps past a certain point. The player base is upset because GGG took bosses that were already ridiculously hard, in Nemesis mode where death is permanent, and made them near impossible. Conclusion is no one in Nemesis mode who values their top end character, read all of them, will run these maps. Essentially making the content irrelevant for a large portion of the player base. Is the point of making content so no one will run it? That's a great idea. Let's make a movie with the intent of having no one watch it?
People's lack of critical thinking amazes me sometimes.

You do realize that your post brings up issues related to player choice, right?
You choose not to run maps without a loot pinata, you say so yourself.
You choose to compete for ladder placement, maps allow for faster exp gain so you choose to do them instead of non-map grinding for exp (yes, you can grind Catacombs to 100 if you really want to make that choice).
We disagree on what the game is about as well. You state that it is about finding loot, I say that the game is about having a toon that can clear content (which does involve a loot component, admittedly). Fundamental differences in perception that will always lead to disagreement, I feel.
I like how a guy who has never set foot in a map, maybe hasn't even seen one drop is the one talking about player "choices" when it comes to playing end game content. Your choice if you want to level to 90+ before the year 2016 is to play lots of high end maps. Maps are great when you first start then you begin to realize how not fun it is to lose a day or 2 worth of xp (or even all of your playtime up to that point)when something one shots you after you almost fell asleep clearing the rest of the map.
You want to talk about choices. I made the choice to stop playing this game and supporting GGG a week ago because end game was unrewarding, boring, and slightly sadistic. They choose to release this patch confirming that my earlier choice was a good one. Once more people make the choice I did, and they will, GGG will have to choose whether to keep the servers up because they cost more than the game brings in. Choices.
