Is it really that bad to cancel a trade and accept a higher offer?

Personally, I think it's just plain dirty. it's horrible business practices and makes you look like you have absolutely no morals. If you already entered into an agreement with someone, you should follow through with your end of the agreement. If you wanted more, you should have held out for more, rather than accepting the offer and then bailing.

There's been several times where I've agreed to sell something, in many different games, and then got offered more. I took the loss every time because I am a person of my word.

It seems like most people would do the opposite and opt for the higher offer. People tend to not give a crap about others in games. They only care about themselves and getting the best out of every situation for themselves.

I have had this done to me many times. The first few times, I got irritated and called the seller every name in the book. Now, I look at it as them having a problem, not me and go about my gaming day. I don't need anything in a game bad enough to effect me in real life.

sounds like a true hypocrite.
A trade is not final until both parties click the Accept button. Don't feel bad about it, just tell the guy you're sorry. If he gets mad, well, it shows he still has some growing up to do.

The amount or mixture of currencies has nothing to do with the fact that you had backed out of an agreement. You missed the entire principle of my response.

As others have said, you can obviously do whatever you want. It's on you how you want to be viewed as a person. In this case, you portray yourself as not being a very good one.

Edit: You got a yellow post basically saying it's ok. Now, you at least have something to hide behind when you pull similar in the future. Though, trading like this is neither friendly, nor fair.

you are taking this way too seriously.

Nah. I don't take much of anything seriously. I am just stating my opinion.

How is this being a hypocrite?

If you are fine with it then there is really nothing else we can say about this beyond opinions and integrity.

Its the same as real life. You can be an asshole to everyone around you, and if you are fine with being treated the same way as well, as long as it is not illegal, why care?
Imagine the opposite.

You're selling something, someone offers 2 ex for your item.
While in the party with that guy, someone offers 3 ex for it.

You leave your party and join the other guy's. You both put your stuff on the trade panel, and you press accept.
The 3 ex guy just leaves and says he doesn't want it anymore.

You go back to the 2 ex guy, who no longer wants yours cos he bought one for 2 ex.

so now you're back to spending hours selling your crap.

I don't bail on a sale, unless the offer made to me is too good to not to. I'm talking about a minimum of 100% increase on a minimum of 10 chaos item.

I suppose you could think of it this way:

Everyone has a price, what's the price for your integrity?

Fair and friendly to yourself. By squeezing out as much as you can from the trade.

and this...this is why i choose to play self found/self crafting. i get enough mind fuck in real life. capitalism sucks and is destined to fail (except for the truly selfish and narcissistic). sure i wont be the best or most godly...but i will have fun... use whatever 'currency' you want, in the end its all the same...there simply is no 'etiquette' when it comes to capital gain...human social programing/engineering dictates that you always need more.

in other words...its a free for all. dog eat dog. its a high for some, not me.

But the thing is, I had several people offering me variable currencies and I chose the one that fits me best. All currencies considered equal in terms of price of the item. I only took what I thought was better because it was a single currency, as I've mentioned before, and not a bunch of random mixed stuff. That's all. The reason is because I already have a bunch of randomized, mixed stuff.

Of course I'm fine with it! But... I'm also not fine with the fact that people consider one to be of low integrity if they agree to a deal and then back out. I did it not to profit, I did it for a different reason.

I agree, and he did get mad even after I said sorry to him.

@Everyone else

Funny comments. That's all I'll say :)

It's your item after all. One thing you can do is to be clear in your thread about how you do business. Add something like "I reserve the right to cancel a trade if X or Y happens." to let people know where you stand.

Cheers
