Hard to say. Valve are a smart company so maybe this situation will never happen. They're taken steam from a buggy POS to the industry leader.

It'd be nice to have a regulatory body in the gaming industry cause the amount of game services right now is getting dumb. Just something to put in place industry standards. Bolts and nuts for example, there are standard sizes all manufacturers have to use instead of each manufacturer making their own sizes and forcing customers to pick.

Spoiler

I wish there were standards with bolts and nuts. Do I Use a M8x1.25 with a 12mm head/nut ala Nissan/Toyota/Honda, or is it going to be a M8x1.25 with a 13mm head/nut ala Ford/Chrysler? Haven't spent another few grand on tools recently? Not to worry, VW and Audi have got you covered by switching all of their bolts to Triple Square. Shelled out a grand for a full Torx set? Don't worry Chevy has now switched to a rounded Torx. Bastards. All of Them.
End Rant

On Topic, I would not want this. I doubt I would have felt compelled to donate had they had steam behind them.

Obviously you're a mechanic? My experience comes from industrial integration so you drill and tap a 8mm hole and throw an M8 into there. Not much fuss involved :) No idea why torx is being used, may be because most assembly is automated and torx is the most reliable interface?

Steam loads with PC OS currently and auto logs in. Opening a game just requires you to right click on the steam icon. I even have shortcuts on my desktop that I click on for steam games, there really is no difference between a game on steam and your computer. No digging is required and I doubt the steam OS will be any less efficient.

I mean steam saves your CD key, configuration files, and saves. It's a great system and this is coming from a guy who absolutely hated steam a few years ago. Also what adds are you talking about? You don't even see the steam client to run a game. Just click on the desktop shortcut and bam game is running.

Crafting doesn't exist in POE. Gambling does...and the house always wins.

Velocireptile - I LOL'ed. Which made me fart. I wish the office were empty right now :(

Hardlicker - I had to push the dog out of the way so I could get to the sexy quilt.
What really sucks about Steam is that it's DRM. Other than that, it is really good for buying, installing and updating games easily. It can also put configuration and saves on their servers and sync them across your devices.

What's really interesting about SteamOS is that it use Linux. It might bring more developers to support Linux. With the effort of Valve on Linux, their intend is to break the cycle of developers supporting Windows because everyone has Windows, and people buying Windows because every developers support it. It is a vicious cycle started and planned by Microsoft with their lock-in strategy.

*Technically* a Technician. Which means I specialize in diagnostics and not part hanging, but ya. I can't speak for industrial integration obviously, but even with M8 there are some manufacturers that use fine pitch x(1.0) and coarse pitch x(1.25) (I might have those backwards, I measure with a gauge when I need a new bolt.) I truly believe they change bolts so often just to make it more difficult for people to "backyard" their cars. VW and Audi are the worst, they just switched over every bolt to what is called "Triple Square", It's essentially a 12 point head, but it has different angles (As it is 3 squares offset) so a regular 12 point will not fit. Then there is Torx, rounded Torx, Reverse Torx (sometimes called Star, designated with an E, Ie E8, Security Torx, It takes over 30K in tools + storage to do my job "properly." Also many manufacturers (lookin at you mercedes) no longer include oil or transmission dipsticks. Checking oil level is "dealer only."
