GGG: Is the Orb of Alchemy vendor recipe working as intended?

so many arguments in this thread hinge on the belief that

more $ = more stash = more rare matches = more alch

the simple fact is that is simply not true. when this game is released accounts will be free and will have 4 free stash tabs. paying more money is more convenient but last time i checked pay4convenience =/= pay2win.

i mean if you really wanted to get technical then someone could set up a site where you earn "points" for every rare you trade which would be used to purchase rares for your matches. that would allow people to match every single rare they own instead of just 1:1 swapping that is currently going on.

but in any case though its NOT pay2win and in my opinion the recipe is perfectly balanced. it provides a worthwhile outlet for all the rares you find, gets players interacting with each other to profit, and to be honest the game could use a bit more alch orbs... i've only gotten 3-4 over the course of leveling 1-40 on 3 characters. i could count a hundred times where i would have liked to have an alch orb but didn't have one.

in addition to this, alch orbs by themselves aren't worth much towards getting good rares. you need lots of chaos gems for that.

To be totally honest, I really don't understand what the problem is. I am a diamond supporter and I didn't even know about the formula (I'm really lazy and just like to smash stuff without thinking). By all accounts, its not like people are running around with 10x the orbs that other people have, because it is reasonably uncommon to get rares with the same name. If you take such a dogmatic approach to P2W, you will never see a F2P game ever have any form of serious success. It seems unfair to compare the unintended (and minor) benefits of the recipe with other P2W examples such as:

Dragon age Origins/ 2 - DLC basically provided for new areas with the best loot + you can buy weapon packs.
Battlefield 3 - full weapons unlock (why even play the game?)
and plenty of others that people have mentioned (apparently some games allow you to pay for buffed spells)

Personally I don't care wihether the recipe stays or goes (As I said, I didn't even know it existed), but if people are going to ask for anything with the slightest p2w aspect to be pulled, you will have nothing left and the game will fail. If you look deep enough you can argue plenty of things are p2w

stash tabs (even without the recipe) = more rares = > ability to sell to players for orbs
char slots = without extra stash tabs = defacto stash tabs or 'bank characters'
guild halls (don't know if planned, but I have seen requests for them) = cool guilds = more players in guilds
bad ass and rare skins/cosmetic effects = probably more friends, guild members, etc who want to hang with the 'cool crowd'. It seems stupid I know, but seriously all people want to do is talk to me about my diamond kiwi.

Whichever way you look at it, there will be unintended aspects of P2W in POE. For me personally (particularly seeing though I invested the $1000 because I want the game to succeed), I am willing to tolerate small amounts of P2W. I am by no means pointing fingers at the OP, but if people are going to boycott POE as some form of 'protest' that seems pretty juvenile to me.

Concerning the part I bolded I currently have 18 alchemy orbs in my stash and 57 matching rare name sets in the bank that I have been to lazy to sell for the 57 alchemy orbs. I believe that would consitute 10 times the normal amount of alchemy orbs most people have. Oh and I haven't played in over a week otherwise I would have much more alchemy orbs.
Luke: Sorry we have to leave you here, but it just ain't right to eat your wife's and daughter's brains. Plus you're really disgusting and I don't want to spend anymore time with you.

I don't understand why others cant see the difference. I mean, they've explained it very well. Obviously there's a problem with the recipe.

The economy hasn't suffered from it, and unless you are lazy anyone can do it. There is no problem.

Hell I could fill my stash with quality items to make armor scraps or blacksmith stones, or unidentified rares to make 2...yes TWO chaos orbs just as easily as matching rare names, and use less stash space doing it. You are over valuing alchemy orbs and claiming there is a huge problem when there simply isnt.

Sincerely, requoting someone else's message and underlining it with "^ This" is not that helpful, insightful or interesting. Sadly I have wasted 30 seconds of my life (and others' now) reading and responding - 30 seconds I'll never get back.

Petrov.
Just to kind of piggyback on what I said before about an alch orbs usefulness, it really only helps lower level <40 players. Ill explain.

Having 20-50 alch orbs doesn't mean you get a high chance of an upgrade past 40. You need white gear with the base stats you want, and you need the sockets. Then you need to add quality before using the alch. Now that's only a use for a single alch, and the odds are not in your favor to get an upgrade. Now you need alot of scouring orbs to retry using those alchs. This is why alchemy orbs are not a problem.

Now let's look from a lowbie perspective. You get a 3 link and up it's quality, and no matter what stats it receives from the alch, it's probably good enough to use.

There you go. In one educated common sense post I have made this whole conversation about the alch orb recipe completely asinine. The recipe helps you twink your new characters. This is not an issue.

I addressed this months ago in my thread where I predicted and talked about exactly this exact conversation you are all having here.
