It's 2025, and XP Penalties on Death Still Exist?
" Cool, I hear you and I also love the real-store metaphors haha. But I still think the truth is somewhere in the middle ( and that's for GGG to decide of course ). And we don't need to take it to extremes, instead of someone gunning down everyone because of a logo, I'm pretty sure that Chipotle might have occasionally expanded it's menu or whatever to reach a wider audience as well. That's the comparison here at least from some vs the gaming industry overall, the main argument would be why not reach a bigger audience? Some are doing it a bit offensively, I agree, but that can be said for both sides of the story atm. Some are coming guns blazing in demanding a change, which is wrong, and then they just get returned fire, which kind of leads to nothing, I think we can agree on this ( and I'm not saying you're within any of those groups by any means ). Aside: if my expansion on Chipotle isn't real for this specific store, just change it with another store name. I don't know what Chipotle is in reality, I've just heard about it randomly, we don't have them here :) . -- Edit 1: clarified a sentence a bit better Last edited by mrxkon#5764 on Jan 3, 2025, 6:32:59 AM

Just died two times in ~30seconds span and uninstalled. Good game, but the punishment on death makes me wanna alt+f4 every time. Since I've already reached my goals in this playthrough (lvl 89, 4th ascendancy done, not gonna bother with pinnacle boss), this time I uninstalled, I lost all morale to grind again for a few hours to recoup the lost xp.

" I wish people would stop asserting this, it entirely comes off as "I have no good argument for it but GGG won't change it so shut up and stop giving feedback that might change their minds". GGG Jonathan has said in interviews that given the other disincentives towards dying in POE2 they would be willing to have a fresh look at this. So unless my memory has completely let me down, it's an assertion that's completely untrue. Maybe it was true for POE1 but GGG are very aware they have the potential to reach a new audience and they need to carefully reconsider their assumptions because now is the time to make changes. |

" What in poe2 has made you think they are reconsidering anything from the GGG norm |

Other games with similarly awful mechanics that completely ruined the game:
Wizardry, on ancient macintosh a beholder looking enemy could hit you w a spell that stole 1 to 3 levels from you you might fight more than one at a time and lose over 10 levels in one fight Crossroads, text MUD on DOS xp loss on death, plus, a spell 'Enfeeble' that could steal levels and it was a DoT! keep fighting? keep losing levels! a spell that could shatter one item another that could destroy all items in inventory Everquest xp loss on death, you can De-Level and become unable to use spells, skills and gear. xp gain was incredibly slow. high level monsters would roam low level zones and 1shot you. NEVER DO XP LOSS ON DEATH. |

" And yet PoE1 has had XP loss on death for 12 years...do you consider it unsuccessful? |

To sum it up:
There are no real reasons to keep exp loss active, but 'traditions' that come from arpg over twenty years ago. Death is punishment, but the willigness to lose progress will demotivate players instead of couraging them to seek vulnerabilities in their builds. GGG is at the crossroad now: 1. Either stay with team stubborn Chris Wilson, with the following results: - keeping the audience as tiny as PoE1 - The audience will stay the same, so will the number of players, so will the profit GGG will make - PoE2 is not a successor, but a texture pack for PoE1, transferring players from PoE1 to PoE2 because of better graphics and more punishment, so they can compete in using their years of knowledge of PoE1 to circumvent these punishments - People new to the franchise will lose interest due to disrespect of their time investments and the unability of the game to reward their efforts 2. Taking the extreme, the numerous INSANE warnings of players seriously and work on community feedback issues. Especially issues, that point out players' time commitment they're ready to make, but not agreeing to a game to delete progression and time investment they made. That results: - Two games are available - Two audiences are present, both enlarging the PoE community - More players means more longtime profit for GGG - PoE2 will be a successor to PoE1 with fundamental changes - People new to the franchise are not goalkept outside I don't know guys. Option 1. would be the most insane route, this company can go. The only challenge chosing path 2. is to overcome their unhealthy stubborness. Last edited by AngryGekko#0233 on Jan 3, 2025, 7:18:45 AM

" Did you actually play the game? And read my post? Firstly, they have said so multiple times. If they hadn't, I would not have had such confidence in the game and bought the pack I did. Second, it's obvious from the design. The whole game is orders of magnitude more accessible and user friendly. You actually stand a chance of finding your own way through it (even with many PPS5 tooltips not working). Now maybe I can't say this is 'changing from the GGG norm' but I can say it is changing from POE1. |
