I don’t doubt they care about the loyal fan base they have built, however GGG is no longer the same studio when they first started.
Right now, they are trying to capture the Elden ring and d4 playerbass most likely hoping to transition them over to residual league players, however this change has alienated their core base as this isn’t the Poe we have grown to love it’s something different entirely.
This alone isn’t a bad thing, it’s more of expectations are meeting reality and I think that’s where a lot of the angst is coming from.
Why do PoE veterans act as if both can't coexist, or are mutually exclusive even?
Now imagine this, for 3 years GGG has told you that poe2 was going to be an expansion on POE1.
The whole time the game has been under Development you were told this. Then you find out that they made it a seperate game. And then you find out it’s nothing like the game you have supported for over a decade.
And then you have a troll in the forums saying “git good” lolz

You need to realize PoE was supported and enjoyed by players for a number of reasons but it was also special in its own way. Making PoE2 and trying to adjust it a different crowd in a way removes the soul of what made PoE great.
First they made hot dog. Then they made burger.
I like hot dog and burger. Both are yummy.
Sometimes I'll feel like eating hot dog, other times I want a burger.

I can sympathise with that. That sucks.
Reminds me of how I felt about Dragon Age Inquisition, and Baldur's Gate 3, and Pokemon S/V, and Fallout 3.

I love PoE2 :) and i love the fact that its slower and harder and u dont get everything handed to u. I have played PoE1 since 2013 and the last 3-4 years i felt like the game was going in the wrong direction. It became way too focus on clearspeed and many mechanics and rewards was way too reliant on having the fastest clearspeed possible which in my opinion kind of ruined the build diversity and made certain builds more or less unplayable and not really viable for endgame content. The balancing in PoE1 was pretty much about scaling the endgame content to fit the dps output of the top performing meta builds instead of balancing those builds which resulted in many builds not being viable anymore. But yeah thats just my honest opinion and i do love the slower and harder pace of PoE2 + the fact that u dont get insane amounts of loot and currency from every single map. If i have to pick one thing i dont think is fair in PoE2 it would be having the first ascendancy tied to a sanctum mechanic since some builds will have a really hard time doing that type of content even when massively overleveled because of how the sanctum mechanic works
POE2 will become that too. It will have probably have even fewer viable builds due to the emphasis on difficulty, your lower power builds will be that much more underpowered compared to POE1. Leagues will recreate the need and desire to rush through the campaign in the fastest most efficient way possible. People hate slogging through the POE1 compaign, they'll hate it even more in POE2. A difficult longer campaign is great when you don't have to repeatedly do it. It becomes a hindrance as soon as you expect players to do it multiple times.

I'm not sure I follow by "as if both can't coexist". Could you elaborate??
IF you mean that PoE1 could continue to be successful in the future at the same time PoE2 is equally [or more] successful I do not believe both will coexist at the peak of what they can be -- one will cannibalize the other.
Economically one game will likely become the cash cow and get all the love & attention [and I'm personally confident the suits want that to be PoE2] while the other is left to wither on the vine and be discontinued.
I would LOVE for both games to be huge successes now and well into the future but I'm not sure I see it ...

There seems to be the false dichotomy on this forum that you can either like PoE1, OR PoE2, but not both. That if you like one, you must logically hate the other.

Using this analogy they make hot dog first. Then they announced the "enhanced hotdog" which they said it's like a hotdog but more modern.
During the time of developing the "enhanced hotdog" they make lower quality Hot Dogs and tell you to be patient because the "enhanced hot dog" will be worth it.
They release the "enhanced hot dog" years later and it's not a hot dog at all.

Poe 1 and poe2 are about as similar as fallout 2 and fallout 3

I can appreciate this analogy. And it made me hungry for hot dogs
