The new battle pass is really gross

Foot-in-the-door (FITD) technique is a compliance tactic that aims at getting a person to agree to a large request by having him or her agree to a modest request first.
this is your battle pass now, you force a ui element on the screen that can not be removed until I go to vault and am forced to see the other reward I need to pay to have.
This is extremely gross, it's a layer of filth and grime PoE does not need.

The fact Chris is adamant about not changing the ui to convince the player, to centralize information in any way, but you have no problem chaging the ui when you want to sell me something, is so telling.

I would love to know what GGG would have said 10 years ago about adding new ui buttons only to monetize off your player base.

You guys should be ashamed.

I'm surprised it has taken so long for this thread to pop up :D

And yes, it's the gacha 101 'get them to go to the cash shop by putting free stuff in there'

It rubs me the wrong way in PoE, and I do play my share of gacha games.
oof have to agree.

There is no foot in the door because the user is given something with no strings attached, not persuaded into making a payment of any size.

There's no real issue here, you're just virtue signaling and probably redirecting your frustrations with the league.

Classic F2P techniques, or phycology if you like. I've always praised GGG for holding this to a minimum in-game. Those days seem gone. Very sad about this.

I don't like what's behind the door they've just opened.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

I have to agree this is pretty gacha worthy though. An annoying UI popup that doesnt go away unless you port out of your instance to take a stroll past all the stuff you could buy is never something I thought I would see in this game.

I admit I don't get the MTX and "battle pass" attraction, but the way to avoid deceptive shit like this is to not buy them in the first place and let someone else be the greater fool - and there will always be that guy out there

It is called psychology, and it works.

The game is psychologically training players into gambling addicts and then takes advantage of them with lootboxes - a dynamic which they are fully aware of. Giving essentially "free samples" is nothing compared to this.

Basically the purpose of a battle pass, and this isn't limited to gacha since a lot of GaaS games have them, is to give players a reason to feel that they need to commit to playing by offering rewards to do so. In PoE's case the paid version might be the idea that somebody sees a cosmetic they want but it is in the later part of the pass so they would still need to play more to make sure they get what they paid for (other games usually just have more P2W in the paid portion).
